High School Volleyball
In southeast Iowa’s first outdoor volleyball games, the Southeast Iowa Super Conference exited with a sweep of the Southeast Conference, as West Burlington defeated Fort Madison in straight sets, despite the contentious scores of 25-22, 27-25, and 25-22, while Holy Trinity Catholic downed Burlington in four sets.
Wapello will get back to action when they host the Arrow Tournament tonight with Mediapolis, Central Lee, Holy Trinity Catholic, Burlington Notre Dame, and Columbus making the trip.
Washington fell to Mid-Prairie last night in four sets by scores of 25-21, 19-25, 22-25, and 18-25. Jeorgia Evans tabbed 15 kills in the winning effort. Mt. Pleasant will host Washington tonight at 7:15 pm.
Fairfield will travel to Fort Madison tonight at 7:15 pm.
WACO will make the trip to play Hillcrest Academy on Thursday, September 3rd, at 7 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will head to English Valleys for a tournament on Saturday, September 5th. Wolves head coach Ashlei Venghaus has challenged her young team with a tough schedule to start the season, hoping it prepares them for later in the year,
“Yeah, it’s been an interesting year so far just in the fact that we don’t have one player that started and finished the season last year. We had a few players that either joined varsity later and played on and off or started playing varsity in a certain role, and finished in a different role. And then of course we had Kynlee [Buffington] who got hurt at the beginning of the season and didn’t get to finish her sophomore season. So just a lot of inexperience right now and just trying to figure out how to play together how to work together, communicate, and just play the game the right way, even while making mistakes and maybe not coming out on top in games, but just playing the game the right way because when we do that, obviously that improvement will come and that gel will come in the future.”
High School Cross Country
The Williamsburg Invitational scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to expected temperatures.
Mt. Pleasant will compete at the Pella Invitational on Saturday, September 5th.
Wapello, WACO, Winfield-Mt. Union, and Columbus will participate at the Hillcrest Academy Early Bird meet tonight at 6:30 pm.
Washington will run at the Bob Brown Invitational on Thursday, September 3rd, at 4 pm in Iowa City.
Central Lee will fly to Keokuk for a meet on Thursday at 4:30 pm along with Burlington Notre Dame.
Van Buren County, Fairfield, and New London will run at the Wildwood Meet on Thursday at 5:20 pm.
High School Cross Country Rankings
With a week’s worth of running in the books, the Iowa Association of Track Coaches (IATC) released their second team and individual rankings and with a couple of squads still waiting to make their first appearance of the year, the spotlight has been put upon some other teams.
The Washington boys’ team started the season with a victory at the Anamosa Meet, as Parker Tschantz locked in a 2nd place time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds. The result was the Demons’ first appearance in the Class 3A rankings at #19 as a team and Tschantz slotting in at #24 in the individual rankings.
On the Class 2A level, the Mediapolis boys’ team kept their spot in the top 20 but fell back a spot to #17, as they won’t have their first meet until September 8th. Central Lee’s performance at the Prairie Invite was good enough for both the boys’ and girls’ team to find a spot at #20 in their respective rankings.
For Class 1A, the Columbus boys’ team, despite not logging a meet yet, moved one rung up to #2, while the Van Buren County girls’ team’s victory at the Albia Meet resulted in the Warriors sliding two spots in their rankings from #5 in the preseason to #7 this week.
The next round of rankings will be released on Monday, September 7th.
High School Football
Mt. Pleasant will compete against Knoxville for their first home game of the season on Friday, September 4th, at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.
Wapello will look to bounce back on Friday at 7 pm against Highland on the road.
WACO will clash with Winfield-Mt. Union at home on Friday at 7 pm.
West Burlington/Notre Dame will take on Fort Madison at home on Friday at 7 pm.
Danville will head over to Louisa-Muscatine on Friday for a 7 pm kickoff.
Mediapolis will travel to Keokuk on Friday at 7 pm.
Fairfield will hit the road to play Centerville on Friday at 7:30 pm.
Washington will host Independence on Friday at 7:30 pm.
Central Lee will make the trip to Albia on Friday at 7:30 pm.
Van Buren County will face off against Columbus on Friday at 7 pm on the road.
High School Girls’ Tennis
Fairfield demolished Fort Madison last night, 9-0. It was a complete sweep by the Trojans with no one losing a single game. The Trojans will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, September 3rd, at 4:30 pm.
Burlington Notre Dame will take on Burlington on the road on Thursday at 4:30 pm.
Southeastern Community College
The volleyball team will stay at home for a matchup against Ellsworth Community College tomorrow, September 2nd, at 6 pm.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams will host St. Louis Community College tomorrow with the men’s team playing first at 2 pm.
College Football
Iowa kicks off the season against Northern Illinois at home on Saturday, September 5th, at 3:16 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the call.
Iowa State will host Southeast Missouri on Saturday to start their season with gametime at noon. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.
