Mt. Pleasant persevered and held their Invitational last night, resulting in WACO’s Josie Dykstra setting a school record in the process. The girls’ race featured a competitive clump of runners until Dykstra made her final move and turned in a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds, which was 13 seconds faster than second place. The junior just let her feet carry her to the finish line,
“Honestly, I don’t know how I did it, but it felt amazing. I knew that when I was going through the mud here, I was like, okay, I want to get out of this. I kind of sped up a little on the straightaway. And I just knew that like back there on the hill, I was like, I can use this. I’m good at hills. So I used that and I just flew the rest of the way.”
Mediapolis’ Avery Dietz turned in the overall third fastest time of 19 minutes and 42 seconds, while Aubree Bunnell of Central Lee took 7th place to help the Hawks capture 2nd place. Danville’s KoraRae Stott turned in a 10th place time of 20 minutes and 58 seconds.
Mt. Pleasant’s Avery Fedler claimed a time of 20 minutes and 9 seconds to take home the gold on the large school side, while Quintrie Lee’s mark of 20 minutes and 35 seconds was good enough for bronze for the large schools. Fairfield grabbed the title with Alex Jo Steward, Ava Jones, and Kensley Fligg all finishing inside the top 10. Washington was led by Emma Horak, who captured 5th place.
On the boys’ side, a mad dash to the finish line ended up in Mid-Prairie’s Max Swartzentruber beating Washington’s Parker Tschantz by two-tenths of a second with a time of 16 minutes and 40.003 seconds with both nabbing their respective gold medals. Mediapolis’ Will Schmidgall grabbed the silver medal for the small schools with a time of 17 minutes, followed by Central Lee’s Drake Newton, who helped the Hawks add another trophy to the collection. Schmidgall talked about the challenges of the course,
“Well, let’s just say I wasn’t expecting the mud over there. It really took a toll on my legs. Every time we went around, my legs just got stuck in there. It was hard to recover, but I pulled through and tried to finish out as strong as I could, so I’m just happy with the way I finished. I gave it all I had.”
For the large schools, Washington snared first place with 46 points, while Fairfield’s Elijah Hampton’s 8th place mark aided the Trojans to a runner-up finish. Mt. Pleasant was anchored by Logan Felder’s 12th place time of 18 minutes and 9 seconds. Panther boys’ head coach Mitch Anderson was happy with his team’s performance without Silas Hulett,
“I was very proud of the way they were able to step up with his absence. And I think their performances, their times are reflecting that. I’ll have to go back through the results, but I think they all stepped up and did an excellent job with that.”
