High School Football
Mt. Pleasant keeps finding a way, as the Panthers managed to overcome a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter for the second week in a row to beat Washington, 29-28, in overtime to remain perfect on the year. Panther head coach John Bowlin knows it was not pretty, but the outcome was,
“Yeah, you know, they’re just fighters. We obviously didn’t have a lot going on. Couldn’t run the ball in the first half. Couldn’t throw the ball in the first half, really. I mean, second half we found a few answers in the run game and you know, we’re able to slip a couple short things but their defense was just swarming all over us tonight. It just talks about the grit that our guys have. I mean, you know, get your backs behind the wall and they just fight like crazy. Never give up on anything. So, you know, both teams just battled like crazy. It was just a great competition tonight. So, really proud of our guys and you know, just two high school football teams getting after it tonight.”
Mt. Pleasant mounted two fourth-quarter scoring drives that ended in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Grayson Walker to Isaiah Lange and a short touchdown run by Ryan Helling to force overtime. Washington would strike first in overtime, as Liam Roberts skirted around the defense to score from 10-yards out. Helling would again find the endzone for the third time tonight and instead of opting for the extra point to tie the game, coach Bowlin went to his bag of tricks,
“I knew we were gonna go for it so it was called timeout to get the play in. I think I knew what play we were gonna run as well. Thank God it worked, right? You know, I mean, anybody can look good when the right things happen but we prepped that and you talked about it earlier. We threw one against Washington in that same play last year so we worked it this week and thought that was kind of the time to let it go and, you know, just excited for our guys. They got that chance. They executed it and it was awesome to see them out there fighting at the end.”
A Griffen Jones halfback pass to Brody Clark sealed the comeback victory for Mt. Pleasant. Washington’s Nic Stone totaled over 200 yards and three touchdowns in the effort.
