High School Volleyball
Due to the heat, Wapello’s Tournament was relocated to Wilton and with that venue change the home court advantage was zapped from the Arrows as they went 1-2 for the night. The Arrows managed to beat English Valleys in three sets for their lone victory, while getting swept by Burlington Notre Dame and Mediapolis. Kyndall Stigge led the team with 15 kills, while Annaka Greiner tabbed 36 assists.
Mediapolis showed out by going 3-1 at the tournament, beating Burlington Notre Dame, English Valleys, and Wapello in straight sets before being swept by Wilton. Addi Steffener was busy collecting 41 assists and 14 kills for the Bullettes.
Central Lee finished the night with a 1-2 record, losing in straight sets to Holy Trinity Catholic and Wilton, while beating Columbus in three sets by scores of 21-9, 13-21, and 15-4. Brylee Cook was instrumental in the victory, accruing nine assists, five kills, and four aces.
Wapello will take on Columbus tomorrow, September 3rd, at 7:30 pm at home.
Central Lee will travel to Keokuk tomorrow at 7:15 pm.
Washington and Mt. Pleasant needed all five sets last night after the Panthers won the odd sets 27-25 and 25-23 and Washington took the even sets 25-23 and 25-9; the fifth set needed 20 extra points to decide the winner with the Demons coming out on top 26-24 behind Layla Green’s 22 kills and five aces.
Mt. Pleasant was led by their front row, as Jenna Schwartz nabbed 12 kills and seven blocks, Hailey Schadt collected 12 kills, and Kya Heaton finished with eight kills, three blocks, and an ace. Panther head coach Alicia Schrader knew her team was on the cusp of an upset victory,
“I’m very proud of them. They just never quit and they never put their heads down. It was just side out. All right, let’s do it again. So I was really proud of their effort and their energy all night.”
Mt. Pleasant will host Albia tomorrow at 7 pm.
Washington will participate in the Anamosa Tournament on Saturday, September 5th.
Fairfield had their own five set thriller against Fort Madison last night, losing 15-12 in the tiebreaker set. Leah Helmick teed off for 25 kills and two aces in the losing effort. The Trojans will be back at home on Tuesday, September 8th, against Washington at 7:15 pm.
WACO will travel to Hillcrest Academy tomorrow at 7 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will head to English Valleys for a tournament on Saturday.
Burlington Notre Dame will host their invitational on Saturday with Danville, Van Buren County, New London, Wapello, and West Burlington also competing.
High School Cross Country
Hillcrest Academy’s Early Bird Meet was canceled due to the heat last night.
Washington will run at the Bob Brown Invitational tomorrow, September 3rd, at 4 pm in Iowa City.
Central Lee will fly to Keokuk for a meet tomorrow at 4:30 pm along with Burlington Notre Dame.
Van Buren County, Fairfield, and New London will run at the Wildwood Meet tomorrow at 5:20 pm.
Mt. Pleasant will compete at the Pella Invitational on Saturday, September 5th.
High School Football
Mt. Pleasant will compete against Knoxville for their first home game of the season on Friday, September 4th, at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.
Wapello will look to bounce back on Friday at 7 pm against Highland on the road.
WACO will clash with Winfield-Mt. Union at home on Friday at 7 pm.
West Burlington/Notre Dame will take on Fort Madison at home on Friday at 7 pm.
Danville will head over to Louisa-Muscatine on Friday for a 7 pm kickoff.
Mediapolis will travel to Keokuk on Friday at 7 pm.

IHSAA and IGHSAU News
According to a NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, Iowa sits atop the nation for participation per state population, amidst a surge of national participation leading to an all-time high and fifth consecutive year increase.
Iowa saw a jump of over 6,000 participants from the 2024-25 to the 2025-26 season. Despite ranking 31st in the country in population, the Hawkeye state slotted in at 21st in participation. Iowa remains the only state in the nation with separate organizations governing boys’ and girls’ sports. The combined participation numbers last year was the highest overall participation since the 2008-09 season.
Southeastern Community College
The volleyball team will stay at home for a matchup against Ellsworth Community College tonight at 6 pm.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams will host St. Louis Community College today with the men’s team playing first at 2 pm.
College Football
Iowa kicks off the season against Northern Illinois at home on Saturday, September 5th, at 3:16 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the call.
Iowa State will host Southeast Missouri on Saturday to start their season with gametime at noon. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.
