Carl “Pokey” Harold Loyd, 75, of New London, died Sunday, June 16, 2024 at his home. He was born in Burlington on October 20, 1948 to James Arthur “Bud” and Ida Frances Wise Loyd. He was a 1966 graduate of New London High School. In 1967 he married Vicki Colby; they later divorced. On May 2, 1987 Carl married Anna (Baxter) Woodsmall in New London.
Carl was a lifelong farmer and owner and operator of Carl Loyd Trucking; drove for Dickey’s Prairie Home, New London Coop, Aldi Foods, and retired from WalMart Transportation.
He was a fifty-year member of New London Mason Lodge AF & AM #28; and a member of New London Jaycees, Ruritans, and formed the New London wrestling boosters; and supported Dollars for Scholars. He was very involved in his community. He enjoyed NASCAR and collected diecast banks. Most importantly, Carl loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud.
Carl is survived by his wife, Anna; his sons, David Dewey Loyd, Dominick Darrin (Jamie) Loyd, Damon Drew (Jennifer) Loyd, Brendon Michael (Kara) Woodsmall, all of New London, and Timothy Keith (Lacey) Woodsmall of Livingston, New Jersey; one brother Leslie (Kathy) Loyd of New London; one sister Wilma Townley of Burlington; ten grandchildren, Culley, Bryce, Samuel, Layney, Carlie Jo, Nick (Bubba), Marlianna, Bronson, Lillian and Leo; two great-grandchildren, Kylie and Hagen; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law Denise Loyd; two grandsons; and one granddaughter.
The funeral service for Mr. Loyd will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, June 20, 2024 at New London Christian Church with Pastor Nathan Cooper officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday at the church. A Masonic service will be at 4:00 pm, with the family greeting friends following until 7:00 pm. Memorials have been established for Black and Gold Backers and New London Wrestling Boosters.
