Mount Pleasant Boys’ Roll in Easy Win:

The Mount Pleasant boys’ basketball team (1-1) received 13 points apiece from Dylan Hagans and Brevin Wilson as the Panthers rolled to an easy 49-29 win over Fort Madison last night.

The win was the first in Eric Rawson’s head coaching career at Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant was stingy as ever on defense, holding the Bloodhounds to five first half points, surging to a 16 point lead at halftime.

The Panthers used a 15-2 run in the second quarter that set the tone for the rest of the night.

Mount Pleasant, now 1-1 on the year, will travel to West Burlington today for matinee action.

Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.

Panther Girls’ Hold on for Thrilling Win Over Fort Madison:

The Mount Pleasant girls’ outscored Fort Madison 17-9 in the third quarter and 7-6 in overtime as they earned a hard fought 62-61 win at HoundDome last night.

The win moved the Panthers to 1-1 on the year.

Curt Watson’s group will have a quick turnaround, as they’ll hook up with the Falcons of West Burlington in the opener of boy-girl double dip at West Burlington this afternoon.

Due to contractual obligations with Hawkeye Football, there will be no radio for today’s games.

UNI Men Pick Up Win No. 1:

Northern Iowa picked up their first win of the season in a 98-53 win over St. Ambrose last night.

Trae Berhow made his season debut with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Noah Carter finished with 17 points. B

Bowen Born pitched in 16, James Betz had 14 and Nate Heise scored 11.

UNI is now 1-3 on the year, they’ll take on No. 19 Richmond on Wednesday.

Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.

Purdy Named to Unitas Award Watch List:

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Purdy is joined on the list by Ian Book of Notre Dame, Sam Ehlinger of Texas, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, Alabama’s Mac Jones, D’Eriq King of Miami, Trevor Lawrence from Clemson, Kellen Mond of Texas A&M, Florida’s Kyle Trask and Zach Wilson of BYU.

The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is given annually to the nation’s best upperclassman quarterback.

Purdy is the winningest quarterback in school history with 21 overall wins and 18 victories vs. conference opponents. He has an all-time record of 11-1 vs. Big 12 foes in Jack Trice Stadium.

Iowa State will be back in action this afternoon when they Cyclones host West Virginia.

Kickoff from Jack Trice Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m.

 

Saturday, December 5 News

Two people died in a two-vehicle crash in Washington County Thursday evening. According to the Iowa State Patrol, at about 5:30 p.m. Patricia A. Remington of Brighton was driving north on Fir Avenue west of Brighton. Westley A. Vaughan of Oskaloosa was driving east on Highway 1. Remington failed to stop at the stop sign and her vehicle collided with Vaughan’s vehicle, sending both vehicles came to rest in the northeast ditch. Remington and a passenger Nita J. Hesseltine of Rubio both died at the scene and were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office. Vaughan and passenger, Mateo Ariza of Oskaloosa, were taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital and University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, respectively. The incident remains under investigation with Iowa State Patrol.

The state of Iowa has updated the positive case analysis dashboard on coronavirus.iowa.gov to include new data for total tests, in addition to individuals tested, providing the public more comprehensive testing data that more clearly illustrates recent virus activity and testing volume. The information for tests and individuals is displayed in total and by day, by test type, and by county. Also included are the current 14-day and 7-day averages for positivity rate and individuals positive per population of 100,000 at statewide and county levels. These trends are more comprehensive indicators of recent virus activity than daily cases and positivity rates alone.

Governor Reynolds  announced Friday that a total of nearly $9 million in assistance is available to assist eligible low-income Iowans who are at imminent risk of eviction and individuals who have lost housing to quickly regain housing stability. The funding will also provide support for homeless shelter operations. The funds are made available through a supplemental appropriation to the Emergency Solutions Grant program through the federal CARES Act.  Individuals in need of assistance must apply through the Coordinated Entry help line in their area, which is available along with additional eligibility and program information at iowahousingrecovery.com.

The Burlington School Board has voted to request permission from the Iowa Department of Education to continue 100% online learning. The decision was made due to the positivity rate in Des Moines County remaining around 18%, and a projected surge in COVID-19 cases occurring around the holidays. The school district submitted the request Friday and ask parents and students to plan accordingly and to assume that students will remain in Remote Instruction for the next two weeks.

The Burlington Police Department warns residents of a phone scam using a local number. Unknown individuals calling residents using a local Burlington phone number indicate the residents owe money for an outstanding student loan debt.The local number being used is (319) 754-7460 and has no affiliation with debt collection. If you receive a similar call requesting money from this number it is a scam.

Thelma Lair, 96, of Danville, died Thursday, December 3, 2020 at New London Specialty Care.  Services are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Mount Pleasant Boys’ Look to Earn Win No. 1 Under Rawson:

The Mount Pleasant boys’ basketball team will aim for victory number one under new head coach Eric Rawson when the Panthers (0-1) hook up with Fort Madison at Panther Gymnasium in the opener for both schools in Southeast Conference play.

The Panthers are coming off a disappointing 51-39 road loss Tuesday night to Cedar Rapids Xavier (1-0) and will look to find some offensive consistency tonight that was missing Tuesday.

Undoubtedly Mount Pleasant will turn to Brevin Wilson for a scoring boost.

This year’s returning leading scorer, Wilson was held to just four points on Tuesday night.

Mount Pleasant has won four out of the last five matchups with the Bloodhounds, the lone loss occuring back on December 21st, 2018.

Tonight’s game will go at 7:30 p.m. with the Panther Tipoff Show beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Panther Girls’ Seek Improvement Against Hounds Tonight:

The Mount Pleasant girls’ basketball team (0-1) is back in action tonight as they head down to the HoundDome in Fort Madison to scrap with the Bloodhounds in their Southeast Conference opener.

The Panthers will try and rebound after an opening season loss early last week to Pella, 57-25.

Tonight marks the first leg of a back-to-back for Curt Watson’s group as they’ll link up with West Burlignton tomorrow.

Mount Pleasant has won the last eight matchups between the two schools and are 24-4 in the last 28 against Fort Madison.

Tonight’s game will tip at 7:45 p.m. in Fort Madison.

Iowa 99, Western Illinois 58

Iowa rolled to a 99-58 win over Western Illinois (0-1) behind 35 points and 10 rebounds from Luka Garza.

Jack Nunge added 18 points off the bench while Joe Wieskamp pitched in 11 and Patrick McCaffery finished with 10.

No. 3 Iowa is now 3-0 on the year.

Drake 87, Omaha 66

DJ Wilkins had 19 points for Drake in an 87-66 win over Omaha.

Shanquan Hemphill added 12 points, Roman Penn had 10 points and 10 assists and Darnell Brodie and Garrett Sturtz also had 10 points apiece.

Omaha’s Matt Pile had 17 points and nine rebounds.

Drake is off to a 3-0 start this year, as well.

Danville Woman Dies of Injuries Received in Accident

An 82-year-old Danville woman has died of injuries received when her bicycle collided with a dump truck

According to the Iowa State Patrol, June Darlene Judd of Danville was transported by air to University of Iowa hospitals Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred at the intersection of Old US 34 and 125th Street in Des Moines County.

Judd was riding east in the outside lane. Marvin Creelman of Burlington was also eastbound driving a dump truck in the inside lane. Judd began to veer into the inside lane.Creelman, crossed the center line in an attempt to avoid the bicyclist.  Judd continued to veer into the inside lane and struck the left side of the dump truck causing Judd be thrown from the bike. The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Single Vehicle Crash

On December 3rd, at approximately 1:40 a.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a motor vehicle accident in the 1700-grid of Oasis Avenue.  An investigation determined that Jaina Rusch, was driving northbound when she lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled into a fence line. The collision resulted in minor damage to the fence and totaled the vehicle.
