Cyclones Fall in Poor Showing Against SDSU:

Iowa State fell 71-68 to South Dakota State (2-2) in upset fashion last night at Hilton Coliseum in a nonconference bout.

Solomon Young had 24 points and five rebounds to lead Cyclones while Javan Johnson added 13 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three blocks but it was not enough.

Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 12 points and Rasir Bolton finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 1-1, they’ll take on DePaul this Sunday afternoon — tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Women’s Hoops: Iowa, ISU Win:

No. 23 Iowa State 91, TCU 68

Iowa State opened their Big 12 slate with a 91-68 win over TCU (2-1, 0-1).

Ashley Joens poured in 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Kristin Scott had 15 points.

Aubrey Joens added 12 points off the bench for the Cyclones.

The No. 23 Cyclones will take on the top-ranked Lady Gamecocks of South Carolina on Sunday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

Tipoff is set for 11:00 a.m.

Iowa 103, Drake 97

Freshman phenom Caitlin Clark poured in 30 points, 13 assists and four steals for Iowa, as the Hawkeyes rallied to a 103-97 win over Drake.

Monika Czinano added 27 points and McKenna Warnock chipped in 20 points and eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes in the scoring affair.

Grace Berg lead Drake with 26 points and nine rebounds

Kierra Collier added 25 points and 10 assists, and Maddie Monahan had 23 points.

Iowa, now 2-0, will scrap with Wisconsin at home on Saturday.

Meanwhile Drake will hook up with Minnesota on Sunday, with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m.

Iowa’s Duncan Named Big Ten Special Teams POW:

Iowa kicker Keith Duncan has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference has announced.

Duncan connected on four field goals in a 26-20 win against Nebraska to move into the top five in school history for career field goals made with 48.

This is Duncan’s fifth career Special Teams Player of the Week honor and first of the season — it’s also Iowa’s first since November 9th, when Charlies Jones won it after returning a punt for a touchdown against Michigan State.

The Iowa football team will take on Illinois this week, kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.

June Darlene Judd

June Darlene Judd, 82, of Danville passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City from injury’s she received from an accident.

 

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the Carman Cemetery, Carman, Illinois.  A memorial has been established in her memory.

Jerry E. Wells

Jerry E. Wells, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

A funeral mass for Mr. Wells will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 9 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 607 S. Jackson St., Mt. Pleasant. Father Paul Connolly will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery will military honors conducted by the US Naval Funeral Honors Detail and the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 10 AM – 7 PM on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Kimzey Funeral Home. The family will not be present.

The funeral mass will be livestreamed on the St. Alphonsus Church website. Masks will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place for the visitation and funeral mass. Memorials in lieu of flowers will be directed to Veterans charities to be determined later. On line condolences may be left at www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.

Jerry Eugene Wells was born December 29, 1935 in Omaha, NE. He was the son of Orville Eugene and Hilda Opal (Powers) Wells. Jerry moved with his family to Mt. Pleasant when he was a year old. He attended Mt. Pleasant High School where he played football and entered the US Naval Reserves. Jerry graduated in 1954 and entered the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Wontauck and the USS Whitemarsh. On September 15, 1956 at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, IA, Jerry was united in marriage to Georgine Sporkman.

Jerry began his working career as a bricklayer and later owned his own brick making company. He accepted a position in the Maintenance Dept. of the Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison. He rose to become the Maintenance Supervisor of the prison from which he retired.

Mr. Wells was a 64-year member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council of Houghton, and the American Legion Robert Tribby Post #58 of Mt. Pleasant. He was a life-long residence on his family’s farm where he enjoyed gardening, hunting and mushrooming. Cutting wood brought great satisfaction to Jerry, as did building “campfires” with his children and grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing in Jerry’s life include his wife of over 60 years, Georgine of Mt. Pleasant; 2 daughters and their husbands – Debbie & John Mascarenas of Mt. Pleasant and Donna & Dennis Maloney of Lake Worth, FL; 7 grandchildren – Bobbie (Mark) Sieren, Jamie (Joe) Guerra, Mindie (Michael) Duke, Evan (Kadie) Johannson, Justice (Marcelo) Barreto, Ayla (Dillon) Armstrong and Harley Carle and 5 great grandchildren.

His mother and father, step-father, Lloyd Alliman, and a grandson, Matthew Manning, precede Jerry in death.

Panthers Go Cold, Fall to Xavier in Season Opener:

The Mount Pleasant Panther basketball was held to just 15 points in the first half as the Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints earned a 51-39 season-opening victory last night at the Saints Center in Cedar Rapids.

The Saints (1-0) used a 23-10 third quarter run to pull away and pick up their 11th straight win over Mount Pleasant in the process.

Max Kaiser led Xavier and all scorers with 12 points, including seven in that third quarter, while senior forward Matthew Schmitt had nine, all of which came on made threes in third quarter.

Mount Pleasant (0-1) was led by senior guard Chase Williamson who finished with 10 points, canning two threes. Sophomore Owen Van Sickle, making his varsity debut, chipped in with nine points and five boards.

Dewon Trent chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.

The Panthers will be off until Friday night, when they hook up with Fort Madison to open Southeast Conference play.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and you can listen on KILJ-FM and kilj.com.

  • Ty Carr had a game-high 28 points for the Bears who picked up win No. 1 in game No. 1 under the direction of the decorated Soukup twins.

  • Dylan Stuecker poured in a game-high 22 points, drilling seven triples for the Hawks.

  • Isabel Manning finished with 29 points and 14 boards to pace Van Buren County to a 16-point victory. They’ll scrap with No. 14 Notre Dame on Friday.

Panthers Fall in Duel to Columbus:

No. 2 Lane Scorpil (113), Will Hotz (170), Trent Wilkerson (195) and Kai Malone (220) each picked up fall victories for Columbus Community/Winfield-Mount Union as the Wildcats picked up an easy 58-24 victory in dual at Mount Pleasant High School last night.

Mount Pleasant’s Reean Seeberg was the only Panther to win on the mat, defeating Trenton Hoback via fall in 3:29.

Three Panthers won via forfeit, including state tournament qualifying Carson Coleman.

Mount Pleasant will be off until Saturday when they travel to Wapello for a varsity tournament. Wrestling will get underway at 10:00 a.m.

Mount Pleasant Bowling Teams Earn Victories:

The Mount Pleasant varsity boys’ and girls’ bowling teams linked up Tuesday with West Burlington at King Pin Lanes in Burlington for a season opening dual.

The boys won their match by 193 pins’ and girls won their match because West Burlington only had three girls available to bowl.

Levi Svoboda rolled a series 306 to lead the boys, while Eden Svoboda picked up a series 298 to lead the girls.

Cyclone Football Up to No. 9 in CFB Playoff:

Iowa State is ranked No. 9 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings.

Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State remain in the top four spots of the College Football Playoff rankings, released Tuesday night.

Texas A&M and Florida are Nos. 5 and 6 while Cincinnati, Georgia, Iowa State and Miami round out the top 10. Oklahoma, Indiana, BYU, Northwestern and Oklahoma State are the next five, and Wisconsin, North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Iowa and USC round out the top 20.

The final five are Marshall, Washington, Oregon, Tulsa and Louisiana.

David Singleton

David Singleton, 71, of Wapello, IA, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at his home.   A celebration of life will be held at a later date with burial in Mallory Cemetery.   Memorials have been established for the Wapello Fire and Rescue and the Wapello VFW.    Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

David Gale Singleton was born on November 18, 1949, the son of Gale and Lois (Milligan) Singleton.  David was a 1967 graduate of Wapello High School and then went to work for a little time at the Iowa Ammunition Plant in West Burlington.   He proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, during the Vietnam War.  On July 7, 1973, he was united in marriage to Michelle West in Wapello.   David worked for Rath Packing for 10 years and retired in 2004 from Grain Processing Corporation.  He was a former member of the Wapello Jaycees.  David enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, mushroom hunting, going to crappie tournaments with Mike and his younger days he enjoyed going to the demolition derbies.

David will be missed by his wife, Michelle; children, Shad (Angela) Singleton of Mora, Minnesota, Sara (Mike) Maddux of Wapello and Seth (Teilsen) Singleton of Wapello; grandchildren, Schae, Wyatt, Tate, Landry, Owen and Teagan and one sister, Sharon (Don) Wood of Wapello.

David will be preceded in death by parents and one brother, Mike Singleton.

Bertha Boyd

Bertha Boyd, 91, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, November 30, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.
