“J. D.” Schimmelpfennig

Jerry Dean “J. D.” Schimmelpfennig, 79, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, passed away on February 12, 2021 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born on May 29, 1941, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Vernie and Dorothy (Conklin) Schimmelpfennig.

  1. D. was a 1959 graduate of Sigourney High School and a 1963 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, where he was a member of the football team and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State in 1973 and attended Harvard University’s Entrepreneurial Program in 1976.

On August 17, 1963, J. D. was united in marriage to his soul mate, Kathleen Grandall, in Elmhurst, NY, and was a devoted husband for 57 years. Four sons were born to this union, Tad, Matt, Joe, and Sam.

Schim began his career as a teacher and coach in Keosauqua from 1964-1967, where he positively impacted the lives of many students and players. After teaching and coaching, he worked as a stockbroker at Arnet-McCabe. In 1974, Schim applied his passion for innovation and started his first company, Homefoamers. It became one of the largest home insulation businesses in the country. In 1977, he was honored with the Iowa Small Businessman of the Year award and was national runner-up. In true Schim fashion, he pursued the challenge of starting yet another business in 1981, Lomont Molding. Schim and Kathy poured their heart and soul into building and growing the business from the ground up over 33 years, employing many people in Southeast Iowa. Lomont was eventually sold to a private equity firm in 2014. As an exemplary entrepreneur, Schim’s extensive success was credited to his tenacity, work ethic, and diligence.

In Mount Pleasant, Schim’s name is commonly recognized as a successful businessman, but also as a generous contributor and supporter of the community. While his sons were young, Schim volunteered his time coaching numerous sports and continued supporting youth athletics after they were grown. He also dedicated his time and wisdom serving as Chamber President, a 13-year Board of Trustee member at Iowa Wesleyan College, and was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church. Schim and Kathy were recipients of the Citizen of the Year award in 2013, in recognition for their devotion and service to the community. His servant’s heart, quick wit, and infectious smile made him all the more admirable.

As “Papa” to his 11 grandchildren, his legacy will live on as an extraordinary patriarch, who by example, instilled in his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, perseverance, and fortitude. Papa enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports, teaching them how to play chess, laughing through games of Old Maid, trips to Dairy Queen, sharing family stories and home-cooked meals around the table, special trips to New York City with each grandchild, and numerous family vacations throughout the years.

Schim relished in leisurely drives in his convertible with Kathy…his bride, best friend, and co-pilot. They enjoyed antiquing, summer days boating on the Mississippi, a bucket list trip to Italy, cooking meals together, attending Hawkeye athletic events, and giving back to their community. His mornings were spent with some of the best friends a guy could ask for, sipping coffee, keeping up on the latest news, and doing life together.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of Mount Pleasant, his four sons, Tad (Melissa) of Suwanee, GA, Matt of Mount Pleasant, Joe (Vanessa) of Newport Beach, CA, and Sam (Megan) of Timnath, CO; his 11 grandchildren, Adison of Salt Lake City, UT & Brandt of University of Tennessee (Tad), Jack, Kate, & Lou of Mount Pleasant (Matt), Connor of Texas Christian University, Hunter & McGuire of Newport Beach, CA (Joe), and Madelyn, Isabelle & Hudson of Timnath, CO (Sam); one brother, Bob (friend M. J. Cordier) Schimmelpfennig of Orlando, FL; one half-sister, Betty Rose Gerberich of West Des Moines, IA, and one brother-in-law, Paul (Sally) Grandall of Seattle, WA.

  1. D. was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws.

Visitation will take place without family present on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. A private Celebration of Life service for the family will take place with Pastor Hegar at 4 p.m. The service will be livestreamed at Powell Funeral Homes Facebook page and at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to First Presbyterian Church, Mount Pleasant Athletic Boosters, and Iowa Wesleyan University.

Prep Wrestling: New London Shines, Columbus-WMU Pair Cruise, NDWB-Danville Flexes Muscles as 14 KILJ-Area Matmen Are Statebound

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

KILJ — It was as clinical as head coach Mark Chiri could have asked for.

He saw his New London Tiger wrestling team — led by the Super Lopez Bros., Marcel and Dominic — punch five individual tickets to the State Wrestling Tournament headlining the KILJ-area on District Saturday.

Marcel, again showing why he’s 1A’s most feared 120-pounder, upped his season ledger to a sterling 56-0 with two more technical fall victories; 23-8 over Jacob Pierick (Collins-Maxwell) in the first round and 26-9 over Paul DeJong (North Mahaska) in the finals.

He’s heading back to the Well after already claiming back-to-back state titles.

A threepeat is on his mind now.

Not to be outdone his little brother Dominic rolled to two tech. falls as well, 20-5 over Martensdale-St Mary’s Devin Schall and 25-10 over Jakson Cobb (Wayne) in the finals.

Teammates Josh Glendenning (two falls), Currey Jacobs (two falls) and Boden Pickle (one fall) also looked to be in top form for the Tigers who will look roar loudly in our state’s capitol.

At District 8 of Class 1A, Mediapolis’ Quinten Aney made sure he wouldn’t miss out on the fun.

Aney started hot with a fall win (1:05) over Cale Seydel before embarking on a top-8 matchup against No. 6 (1A-132) Quincy Happel (Lisbon) in the finals.

Happel got the upper hand on the eighth-ranked Aney, but the Bulldog stayed steadfast in his journey winning his wrestleback via fall (1:59) over Wapello’s Elijah Belzer.

Aney, a state medalist last year, is heading back to improve on his 8th place finish last season.

How about WACO’s Landon Provino?

The Warrior 285-pounder turned more heads on Saturday earning a monster fall win (0:35) over Northeast-Goose Lake’s Nate Lorenzen in the first round.

Provino then had the task of grappling 1A’s No. 3 ranked 285-pounder in Lisbon’s Brant Baltes and while he lost that match, he avoided having a wrestleback when Lorenzen, whom he already defeated, won his consolation match.

In 2A, the terrific pair from Columbus-WMU made their mark early and often as Lane Scorpil (113) and Chance Malone (285) both punched tickets to state as district champions.

Scorpil picked up a fall (2:32) in the first round over Mose Yoder (Mid-Prairie) before coasting to a 4-0 decision in the finals over Albia’s Brodie Conner.

Malone also earned a first round fall, making quick work of E-B-F’s Skyler Young (1:34) before coming from behind late in the finals nabbing a 4-1 decision over Mid-Prairie’s Gannon Callahan.

Scorpil, No. 2 at 113 in 2A, and Malone, No. 9 at 285, both have their eyes on the podium next week.

For Notre Dame-West Burlington-Danville, it was business as usual punching five individual tickets to the Well beginning Thursday.

Second-ranked 120-pounder Blaine Frazier is making his third trip in as many seasons.

Frazier picked up a fall (1:26) over Dawson Bonnett (Albia) in the first round before sneaking by Davis County’s Dawson Townsend by decision, 4-1.

A podium is the next step for the talented junior.

152-pounder Grifen Molle, who suffered his first defeat last week to Parker Terronez (Assumption) made sure that was a mere aberration.

Molle went full demolition man on Terronez in the finals, earning a fall win (4:42) to punch his return ticket to Des Moines.

Molle was a medalist for the Nikes, who wrestled 3A, last year.

Three other Nikes are state qualifiers:

  • 170-pounder C.J. Walrath (two falls)
  • 160-pounder River Belger (one fall)
  • 145-pounder Sam West (wrestleback winner, SV-1 3-1)

Mount Pleasant’s Sam Carrasco had a gutsy showing, falling to Albia’s Paul Ballard in his opening round match before coming back to destroy Davenport Assumption’s Chase Diaz via major decision 11-3.

He did not get a chance to wrestleback and ended his season 23-13.

Governor Meets With Young Professionals in Mount Pleasant

A group of Mount Pleasant young professionals accepted an invitation to meet with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Friday afternoon.  The Governor was wrapping up a two day trip to Southeast Iowa meeting with Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development groups. The Mount Pleasant group wanted to discuss childcare, small business, the need for arts and culture and efforts supporting Iowa Wesleyan University.  The Governor said she spent two days visiting in Southeast Iowa to talk about her agenda with the top focus on expanding broadband and investing in faster internet saying Iowa has the second slowest internet in the country. She was also interested in talking about improving state housing programs and encouraging communities to take advantage of these programs.  Reynolds expressed excitement about the Mount Pleasant efforts to develop a community childcare center. Childcare is another priority for the Governor. She talked about the Childcare Challenge Fund and was pleased the local effort had already submitted a request for funding that can be used for new construction of a childcare facility, rehabilitation of an existing structure as a child care facility or retrofitting and repurposing of an existing structure for use as a child care facility. Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Executive vice president Kristi Perry told Reynolds that her administration is hitting on everything that is important to Southeast Iowa.
