College Volleyball: Westminster Sweeps Wesleyan

Mount Pleasant — The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team was taken down in straight sets yesterday, falling 3-0 to Westminster.

The Tigers played to a close tilt in the second set, but the Blue Jays held on for a 26-24 win. They came back in the third set with a 25-19 win after winning set one 25-12.

Malie DaMate led the Tigers with seven kills, Skylar Garcille added five.

Lindsay Fernandes led the team with eight assists, while Leamaris Fuentes led the back row with 10 digs.

The loss drops Iowa Wesleyan to 1-11 overall.

They’ll be back at home this Saturday when they welcome in the Gorloks of Webster University.

First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Men’s College Basketball: Drake, DeVries Agree on Eight-Year Extension:

Drake University Director of Athletics Brian Hardin has announced that the University and head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries have agreed to an 8-year contract extension through the 2028-29 season.

DeVries, who is currently in his third season at Drake, guided the Bulldogs to their first at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament this season after compiling 25 wins, the third-most in the nation and third-most in program history.

DeVries has a career record of 69-28 at Drake with three-straight 20-win seasons.

In three seasons, DeVries has twice been named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year and is only the second Drake head coach to earn the honor multiple times.

DeVries and the Bulldogs take on Wichita State this evening in a First Four matchup. The winner will play sixth-seeded USC on Saturday.

Women’s College Basketball: Iowa’s Clark Tabbed Second Team All-America:

Iowa freshman guard Caitlin Clark has been honored for her terrific inaugural campaign in Iowa City.

The Des Moines native was named an Associated Press Second Team All-American yesterday.

Clark is in rarefied air with the selection.

She is just the eighth Hawkeye to be named AP All-American and the first freshman.

In 27 games Clark averaged 26.7 points and 7.2 assists while connecting on 47% of her shots from the field.

The fifth-seeded Hawkeyes will open NCAA Women’s Tournament action on Sunday when they take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan.

Tip is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

College Wrestling: Iowa Favored in NCAA Championships:

The top ranked Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team hopes the wait is worth it as the NCAA Championships begin today in St. Louis.

The Hawkeyes were heavily favored to win the team title last season when the tournament was cancelled.

Iowa is coming off a dominant performance at the Big Ten Championships.

The Hawkeyes have four wrestlers who are top seeded, including 125-pounder Spencer Lee, who is favored to win his third national title.

The NCAA Championships are being wrestled in St. Louis.

 

Single Vehicle Crash

On March 15th, 2021, at approximately 4:58AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a single motor vehicle crash, with injury, occurring in the 1600-grid of US Highway 78 near the Graham Avenue intersection “S” curves.

During investigation, it was determined that the vehicle was found to have missed navigating the curve and left the roadway from weather related factors. The driver was identified as Kayla Ling, 21, of Mediapolis. Injuries were determined to be minor and non-life threatening.  The driver was transported by ambulance from the scene.  Damages to the Ling vehicle were estimated at $5000.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was assisted with this incident by Wayland First responders and Fire Department as well as area Emergency Medical Services.

Letha Spiesz

Letha Mae Spiesz, 72, of rural Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. Arrangements are pending at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.

Men’s College Basketball: Garza Becomes Two-Time AP All-American

Iowa City — Iowa senior Luka Garza has become the first University of Iowa men’s basketball player to be voted first-team All-America by the Associated Press in consecutive seasons.

Garza received every vote, becoming the only unanimous selection by the 63-person media voting panel.

Joining Garza on the first team are Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois, Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert, Jared Butler of Baylor, and Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham.

Garza has led the eighth-ranked Hawkeyes to 21 victories this season, including wins in eight of their last 10 contests.

The D.C. native leads the nation in total points and 30-point games.

The two-time Big Ten Player of the Year averaged 21.9 points per game during the 20-game conference schedule, becoming just the third player since 1990 to lead the Big Ten in scoring in consecutive seasons.

No. 2 seed Iowa (21-8) will open NCAA Tournament play on Saturday against 15th-seeded Grand Canyon (17-6).

Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 5:25 p.m. in Indianapolis.

Men’s College Soccer: Wesleyan Ties Blue Jays in Double OT

Mediapolis — Francisco Javier Saldana scored in the 17th minute of the first half, but Wesleyan’s attack was silenced after that, as the Tigers and Westminster played to a 1-1 draw last night at Mediapolis High School.

Saldana had a chance to win the game in the late stages on a penalty kick, but the junior missed and the game subsequently went to overtime where neither team could find their offensive footing.

The Blue Jays outshot Wesleyan 14-9.

Vicent Sanchis recorded eight saves in net for the Tigers, also saving a penalty kick shot attempt.

Now 2-0-1 ,the Tigers will be off until next Tuesday when they welcome in Webster for a matinee affair set for 1:00 p.m.
