 The Mount Pleasant Board of Education SITE COMMITTEE will meet at 4:30 PM on Thursday, June 3, 2021, to review/discuss:

  1. Emergency/Hard Surface Bus Routes
  2. Facilities Planning Presentation – Carl A. Nelson Construction Co.
  3. Purchase Agreement for 404 N. Lincoln Property
  4. Mount Pleasant Daycare After School Programming Request

The meeting is open to the public and patrons are welcome.

Larry Dean Frost

Larry Dean Frost, 84, of Mt. Pleasant died Tuesday, June 1, 2021 after a brief illness.

Born December 18, 1936 in Knoxville, Iowa, he was the son of Cecil W. and Juanita (Lomax) Frost.

Larry served two years in the Army during the Berlin Crisis. While in the service he received the Good Conduct Award.

After returning home he married Ruthann Pfadenhauer but later divorced. He married the love of his life, Donna Knifong on December 18, 1992 in Weslaco, Texas.

Larry worked at the Frankhauser Dairy. Then worked at Superior Cable for two years. Followed by working at Mills Electric for seven years. He worked in maintenance at Mapleleaf Care Center for 15 years, the decided to take time off to go to auctions to look for antiques. Later he returned to work at Pleasant Manor in maintenance for eight years.

He is survived by two sons, Curtis Frost of Minnesota, Timothy Frost of Burlington; three grandsons and three granddaughters. He is survived by his only sister, Rozella Schroeder of Mt. Pleasant, many nieces and nephews and a special friend Charlene Hinrich of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers: Paul, Wayne, Norman, Kevin and Verdell, two wives and his faithful companion Ursela.

A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Military Rites provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held prior to burial, 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A general memorial fund has been established. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for Larry and his family.

Motorcycle Crash Near Winfield

Several law enforcement and emergency response crews were called to the scene of a motorcycle crash on Hwy 78 just west of South Locust Street in Winfield, May 30, just after 6:30 pm. Jody Henkle of Wayland was operating the cycle westbound on Hwy 78 when the vehicle dropped off the shoulder. The motorcycle ended up in the ditch.  Henkle complained of a possible injury and was cited for failure to maintain control.  The Iowa State Patrol headed up the investigation into the incident.

Truck-Deer Collision

On May 31st at approximately 12:36 a.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a deer versus truck accident in the Northbound lanes of Highway 218, near exit 45. An investigation determined that Mickey Slinger of Cedar Rapids, 56, operator of a pickup, was headed Northbound when a deer entered the roadway causing a collision. The vehicle was a total loss and minor injuries were reported. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Iowa State Patrol, HCHC Ambulance, and the Mount Pleasant Fire Department.

Girls’ Golf: Liechty in 13th, New London 5th After Day One

KILJ — Mount Pleasant’s Elli Liechty has herself inside the top-15 following Day One of the Class 3A Golf Tournament in Adel.

Liechty carded a 91 — good for 13th — yesterday,  setting herself up for a great finish today, where she’ll tee off at 8:30 a.m.

The Panther senior birdied on five, while sinking five pars on her scorecard.

Washington’s Kiki Bruner is currently second in the Class 3A field, her teammate Anna Nacos is fourth.

The Demons lead the team standings in Class 3A by 17 strokes over second-place Gilbert.

Meanwhile in 1A, New London’s Taylor Phillips is tied for 11th through Day One at 18-over.

Sophie Malott and Hannah Ortberg are the next two highest on the leaderboard for New London, who is fifth in the team standings thus far.

Algona Bishop Garrigan leads the 1A team race by thirty strokes over second-place Grundy Center.

Danville’s Natalie Wilcox, competing on an individual basis, is 30th, carding a Day One 97.

Area Prep Baseball (Tuesday)

KILJ — The baseball circuit was raucous last night with several Super Conference teams on the slate.

Here’s a look at the finals in the area:

Wapello 13, Winfield-Mount Union 8 

Cooper Garrison had three hits, including a triple, as Wapello rolled by Winfield-Mount Union 13-8 last night in a Super Conference tilt.

Owen Housman was the winning pitcher for the Indians throwing four innings allowing just two hits and one run while fanning six.

Chase Witte also had a two-hit evening, while driving in four.

Winfield-Mount Union rallied for five in the 6th inning, but saw Wapello strike for five of their own in the top of the 7th to put the game on ice.

The Wolves fell to 0-5. Wapello earned their first win to improve to 1-2.

Highland 3, Mediapolis 1 

Chase Schultz kept Mediapolis hitters off balance all night for Highland, who earned a hard-fought 3-1 win last night.

Schultz went 6.2 innings,  scattering four hits and a run, punching out 13.

Trevor McFarland and Schultz each drove in one for the Huskies.

McFarland earned the save for Highland after the Bulldogs rallied for their lone marker in the 7th inning.

Mediapolis fell to 1-2, while Highland improved to 4-1.

New London 15, Danville 0 (5 Innings)

New London rung the dinner bell early and often as they devoured Danville 15-0 in five innings yesterday in a Super Conference tilt.

Carter Allen had two hits and two runs batted in while Brendan Richey also poured in a multi-hit night.

Camden Kasel drove in three runs for the Tigers, who upped their ledger to 2-0.

Hecniel Rodriguez was the winning pitcher, tossing four shutout innings while striking out nine.

Danville slipped to 1-1.

Area Prep Softball (Tuesday)

KILJ — It was a a busy night of prep softball in the region yesterday.

Here’s a look at the area scoreboard:

Winfield-Mount Union 4, Wapello 0 

Anna Anderson continued her hot start at the dish with three more hits in four at-bats as she helped guide Winfield-Mount Union to a 4-0 win yesterday over Wapello.

Carlee Sloan, Jobey Malone, and Melina Oepping all had two hits for the Lady Wolves.

Madie Anderson pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out 11.

Winfield-Mount Union improved to 4-1.

Wapello sunk to 1-4.

Highland 12, Mediapolis 5

Jayde Eberhardt had three hits but it was not enough as Mediapolis succumbed to Highland 12-5.

Payton Brun had two hits for the Huskies while also scoring three runs, driving in three runs and stealing two bases.

Hallie Mohr took the loss for the 0-4 Bullettes, tossing six innings allowing eight hits and eight earned runs.

Grace Batcheller was the winning arm for the Huskies going the first four innings striking out four.

Danville 6, New London 4 

Morgan Waste had three hits, including a double, while driving in one as Danville upended New London 6-4, last night.

Ava Smith was dynamite in the circle for Danville tossing seven strong innings, yielding just five hits and two earned runs while striking out 11.

Ashlyn McSorely and Elly Manning both had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

Manning took the loss allowing just two earned runs over six innings.

Three Tiger errors aided the Danville win.

New London is now 1-4.

Danville improved to 1-2.
