Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Test Iowa at Home

This week, Test Iowa, the state’s free COVID-19 testing program will transition from offering COVID-19 testing at drive through locations throughout the state to providing Iowans access to free, self-administered test kits. Since launching in April of 2020, Test Iowa has processed over 540,000 PCR COVID-19 tests.

Through Test Iowa at-home, a partnership between the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the State Hygienic Lab (SHL), Iowans will be able to receive a free test kit, collect a saliva sample at home, return the sample by UPS and receive results through email.

Beginning Friday, July 16, Iowans may choose to pick up a test kit from a site in their community or have a kit sent to their home at no cost. Each test kit includes step-by-step instructions including how to activate the test kit, collect the test sample, return sample to SHL and when to expect results. The current Test Iowa website will be updated to facilitate the process for requesting test kits and will feature a test kit site locator tool. There are approximately 125 pick-up sites registered throughout the state.

The currently operational drive-through sites in Des Moines and Davenport and testing clinics will remain open through July 16, at 4:00 PM. Appointments for Friday July 16, can be scheduled on testiowa.com through the end of the day on Thursday, July 15.

Homebound individuals have the option to request a kit to be sent to their home, and to have UPS pick up their sample. Results will be sent via email about 24 hours from when the sample is received by SHL. These self-collected saliva test kits are authorized by the FDA under an emergency use authorization.

The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. We encourage all Iowans who have questions about the COVID-19 vaccine to reach out to their health care provider. Vaccine providers and events can be found on https://vaccinate.iowa.gov/

Farmland Leasing Meetings in July/August

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is conducting farmland leasing meetings across 9 different locations in Southeast Iowa during July and August 2021. Meetings are coordinated by county ISU Extension and Outreach offices.

The discussion will focus on various methods to determine a fair 2022 cash rental rate and the importance of good tenant/landlord communications. In addition, a brief economic outlook will be presented along with a look at farmland prices. According to the Cash Rental Rates for Iowa – 2021 Survey released in mid-May, the average 2021 cash rent statewide is $232 per tillable acre, a slight increase from $222 in 2020. Average cash rents have remained stable the last couple of years.

The Henry County meeting will be Wednesday, August 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with doors open at 9 a.m. This meeting will be at the Henry County Extension Office, 127 N Main, Mt. Pleasant. If you have concerns about safety practices being implemented, please contact the county extension office. Participants will receive a 100-page booklet and meeting handouts designed to assist landowners, tenants and other agri-business professionals with issues related to farmland ownership, management and leasing arrangements.

Prep Softball: Instant Classic Leads to Highland Win

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

Highland 1, No. 15 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union 0

It took 14 innings, but Highland scratched the lone run across as the Huskies prevailed for a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 15 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union last night in Winfield.

The game was resumed after being rained out on Friday and Saturday.

Freshman shortstop Sarah Burton had three hits and scored the lone run via pass ball after starting the 14th with a bunt single that turned into a three-bagger after a throwing error.

Payton Brun had two hits for Highland as well.

The real story, however, was the pitching performance from both teams.

Of course the terrific Madie Anderson was dynamite for the Lady Wolves, throwing 14 innings allowing just the one run while striking out 20 hitters.

Grace Batcheller and Jessica Kraus combined for the shutout for Highland.

Batcheller pitched 7.1 innings allowing nine hits while striking out three.

Kraus threw 6.2 without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out six.

The win propelled Highland to tonight’s region final where they’ll meet with No. 4 Lisbon.

Winfield closes their season at 17-6.

No. 14 Regina 8 , No. 3 Louisa-Muscatine 7

Iowa City Regina scratched a run across late in the game as the Regals upset Louisa-Muscatine last night.

The win moves Regina to tonight’s region final where they’ll take on upstart Cardinal.

Kylee Sanders had two hits to pace the Falcons.

Louisa-Muscatine closes their season at 20-9.
