Prep Volleyball: Mount Pleasant, Several Area Schools Back on Hardwood Tonight

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant volleyball team is one of many area teams back on the hardcourt tonight, in a busy slate of area volleyball.

Tonight the Panthers will travel to take on Washington in a Southeast Conference matchup.

The Panthers come into proceedings tonight with a record of 9-8, winners of three of their last five.

Senior hitter Kenna Lamm is off to a terrific start, providing 134 kills over the first 17 games.

Washington is 0-11 on the year, action will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s College Soccer: Mulhern Named CAC Soccer Player of the Week

KILJ — Iowa Wesleyan goalkeeper Kylie Mulhern has been named the Continental Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced yesterday.

Mulhern, who is in her second season with the Tigers, recorded 11 saves in the Tigers’ 6-0 victory over Faith Baptist Bible College on Saturday.

This is the team’s first ward since joining the Continental Athletic Conference.

Iowa Wesleyan will battle Harris-Stowe State on Wednesday in St. Louis.

Kick is set for 1:00 p.m.

College Football: Wesleyan’s Esquivel Named Conference Offensive Player of the Week:

Iowa Wesleyan quarterback Gavin Esquivel has been named the the North Star Athletic Association Conference offensive player of the week.

In Saturday’s shootout loss, Esquivel completed 24-of-40 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns.

Esquivel’s longest completed pass was 69 yards and connected with 10 different receivers in the game.

Esquivel is the first Iowa Wesleyan football player to earn conference honors as the Tigers joined the conference this season along with their return to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic.

The Tigers will host Trinity International University this Saturday for a 12:00 pm contest.

Robert M. “Bob” Patterson

Robert M. “Bob” Patterson, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, August 26, 2021 of natural causes at his farm northeast of Mt. Pleasant.

A private family graveside service will be held at the family plot in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. David Bracht-Wagner, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Friends may call to sign the register and pay their respects from 9AM to 8 PM on Thursday, September 16 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant.

Robert Marvin Patterson was born September 16, 1926 in Iowa City, IA. He was the son of Arthur Marvin “Pat” and Margaret (Rogers) Patterson. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. In 1958, Bob was conferred with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from (then) Iowa Wesleyan College. He received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Bob taught for a while at Mt. Pleasant High School and WACO High School. Bob loved to drive. He drove for Winnebago Industries delivering motor homes and for the Caterpillar Corporation. He also did private chauffer driving for people for errands, short trips and extended trips. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed dining out and conversing with his friends.

Those thankful for sharing in Bob’s life include 2 sisters – Penelope Patterson and Sarah Conkey and her husband Howard, all of Hot Springs, AR and 3 nieces and nephews.

His parents, a brother – John Patterson, a sister – Janice Wieckhorst and a niece precede Bob in death.

 

Investigation Of Human Remains Found in Lee County

On September 5, 2021 at approximately 10:16 AM, law enforcement agencies (West Point Police Department (WPPD), Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI)) were contacted by a property owner who located human remains on their rural West Point property, in the area of 110th Street, West Point, IA.  A search was conducted and no other human remains were located.

On September 8, 2021 an additional search was conducted by the West Point Fire Department, WPPD, LCSO, DCI and members of a K-9 search and rescue organization. No other human remains were located during the search and additional searches were scheduled.

On September 11, 2021 the property owner conducted a large scale brush clearing operation of the property to assist law enforcement with the search for additional human remains.

On September 12, 2021 at approximately 8:25 AM, the property owner located additional human remains and members of the WPPD, LCSO, DCI and Lee County Medical Examiner Investigator responded and conducted an investigation.  During the scene examination there were personal items discovered at the scene which will assist in the identification, however the final identification will have to be made using DNA analysis.  The human remains were transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, examination and identification.  Once a positive identification can be accomplished through DNA analysis, law enforcement will conduct family notifications.

There did not appear to be any signs of foul play related to the investigation and there are no apparent threats or dangers to the general public related to the incident.
No further information will be released at this time.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
