Prep Basketball: WACO Boys’ Escape with Huge Win; W-MU Girls Roll

KILJ — The WACO boys’ used a 13-2 third quarter run to help the Warriors earned a come from behind 49-41 win over Winfield-Mount Union on Saturday.

The Warriors, trailing by four at halftime, outscored the Wolves 26-14 in the second half.

The loss was Winfield-Mount Union’s first of the season.

WACO surged to 6-2.

The Warriors will get a scrap with Danville, Tuesday night.

Winfield-Mount Union will look to rebound with a date at Louisa-Muscatine, Tuesday as well.

Meanwhile in the girls’ tilt, Bradie Buffington had a game-high 17 points as the Lady Wolves put it in cruise control for a 52-25 win over WACO.

Ellah Kissell paced the Warriors with 13 points.

Winfield-Mount Union improved to 8-2.

WACO fell to 5-4.

Men’s Basketball: Wesleyan Falls in Saturday Matinee to Mount Mercy

Cedar Rapids — Dylan Hurley scored 18 points but it was not enough as Mount Mercy earned a 67-58 over Wesleyan, Saturday.

Victor Munoz had eight points and eight rebounds despite the loss.

Wesleyan dropped to 5-10.

Mount Mercy was paced by Ryan Bartley and his 14 points.

RoyShawn Webb added 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers will take on Bellevue University on December 29th in Bellevue, Nebraska in their first game of the Hampton Inn Bruin Classic.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.

College Football: Iowa State’s Hall Declares for NFL Draft

Ames — Iowa State running back Breece Hall has declared for the NFL Draft.

A two-time All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year, rushed for 3,941 yards and 50 touchdowns in three seasons.

Hall will not play in the Cyclones upcoming Cheez-It Bowl game.

He will end his junior campaign with 1,472 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Prep Wrestling: Coleman Finishes 1st at Regina Invite; Other Prep Finals:

Mount Pleasant senior Carson Coleman earned two fall wins and two decision victories, rolling to a first place finish in the 126-pound weight class at Saturday’s Regina Invite.

Coleman, now 11-2 on the year, defeated Luke Guseman of West Branch 3-2 in the championship bout.

138-pounder Bowen Davis placed third for the Panthers, winning his third place match over West Branch’s Logan Keeler, 12-10.

Gannon McNamee placed fourth at 120 while heavyweight Frank Tousignant placed 6th.

WACO also wrestled at Regina.

The Warriors had three first place finishers.

Jonah Clark at 220, Louiden Huisenga at 145 and Larz Smith at 138.

Huisenga was particularly dominant, earning two fall wins.

He’s now 16-1 on the season.

No. 4 Notre Dame Rolls to Third at Fort Madison; Other Results

Five Nikes were crowned individual champions as the fourth-ranked Nikes steamrolled to a team third place finish at the prestigious Fort Madison Invite on Saturday.

Ottumwa was the meet champion, followed up Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

C.J. Walrath showed why he’s one of the state’s top wrestlers.

The 182-pounder won his individual bracket with six consecutive falls, including a showdown with New London’s ranked Josh Glendening in the championship.

Joining him with gold was senior Blaine Frazier, who like Walrath, earned pins in all six of his bouts.

Isaiah Fenton, Carter West and Tate O’Shea were the other victors for Notre Dame.

New London finished fifth at the HoundDome, ending with 215 team points.

Marcel Lopez, a SIU-Edwardsville recruit, earned a championship at 126.

Dominic Lopez went 6-0 at 160 picking up a fall and four techincal falls wins before escaping with a 9-5 over Notre Dame’s Sam West in the championship round.

No. 2 ranked Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union senior Lane Scorpil continued his reign of dominance this season with an easy championship at 120.

Scorpil picked up five pins and tech fall.

Mediapolis’ Quinten Aney had to take a medical forfeit due to injury.

Two Vehicle Accident in Mount Pleasant

On Saturday at about 5:30 pm the Mount Pleasant Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the 100 block of West Washington Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that a Jeep operated by Rosita De La Rosa of Mount Pleasant, was traveling south in the 100 block of South Jefferson Street. She made an improper left-hand turn to travel east on Washington Street. While turning, her vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Justin Morgan of Mount Pleasant which was stopped at the stop light on West Washington Street at the intersection of Jefferson Street. The De La Rosa vehicle struck the front driver side bumper of Morgan vehicle.  As a result of this investigation, Morgan was charged with driving while barred.

Deb Crouch

Deb Crouch, 65, of New London, died Sunday, December 12, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born January 30, 1956 in Parnell, Iowa to Wayne and Marjorie Suppel Gingerich. She was a 1974 graduate of Williamsburg High School and graduated from Kirkwood Community College. On September 18, 1976, she married Jerry Crouch in Holbrook, Iowa.
Deb worked in production at Motorola until it’s closing, then graduated from Southeastern Community College with a Graphic Design degree. She then worked as a graphic ad designer for the Mt. Pleasant News. She was of the Catholic faith; was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader and on the Boy Scout District Committee; served on the New London little league board; was head of Red Caboose Gift Shop at Midwest Central Railroad; and she enjoyed reading romance novels on her Kindle and doing cross stitch.
Survivors include her husband of New London; two sons, Joe of New London and Josh of Albany, Georgia; brothers Mike Gingerich of Riverside and Mark (Lynn) Gingerich of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and one sister Susie (Terry) Jones of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Scott.
According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Monday at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Wanda G. McPheron

Wanda G. McPheron, 89, of New London, died Sunday, December 19, 2021 at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

 

Jane A. Graf

Jane A. Graf, 74, of Kirksville, Missouri, died at 11:50 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, Missouri. She’d courageously battled kidney cancer since 2018.

 

Jane was born Nov. 6, 1947 in Ottumwa to Murl and Madelyn Elsensohn Carr. She grew up on a small dairy farm near Douds and married Richard C. Graf Dec. 18, 1966 in Douds.

She graduated from Van Buren High School in 1965 and enrolled at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville. She transferred to Parsons College in Fairfield after marriage and graduated in 1968.

 

In addition to her family, Jane’s passion in life was teaching. She first taught at Pence Elementary in Fairfield and later at schools in Birmingham, Stockport, and Douds, where she had also attended school. She retired in 2011 but later resumed teaching at Faith Lutheran School in Kirksville. All told, she spent five decades in classrooms in Iowa and Missouri, teaching hundreds of students. In addition to her love of teaching, she took joy in helping mentor young teachers.

 

Her hobbies included reading, quilting, cooking, gardening, and watching sports, primarily college football and NASCAR.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jerry Carr; and an infant sister, Judith Kay Carr.  Surviving are her husband and two sons, Mike of Leon, Iowa; Scott (Kelly) of Eagle, Idaho; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

Jane’s body has been cremated. Services are planned in 2022 in Douds and Kirksville and will be announced at a later date.  Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua is in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to Hospice of Northeast Missouri or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital may be mailed to the family at 2810 East Patterson, Kirksville, MO 63501.  Online condolences may be left at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
