Staff Assault: Iowa State Penitentiary

FORT MADISON – A correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary on the evening of December 5, 2021.

A response team was assisting with an inmate that was uncooperative and had attempted to assault another officer. The officer involved was assisting with the removal of the uncooperative inmate from a cell when assaulted with a sharp object.

The officer involved was taken to the hospital by department vehicle for an injury to the arm. He has since been released and has returned to duty.

The inmate has been evaluated by medical staff and this incident remains under investigation.

Morning MVA

Emergency responders were paged out Tuesday morning right before 6:30 for a single vehicle rollover accident on Benton Avenue west of Mount Pleasant.  Initial reports indicate a male subject received head and leg injuries. Stayed tuned for more details.

Garage Fire

The Salem Fire Department was called out Monday afternoon to a garage fire at 1406 310th Street. Hillsboro Fire Department was called for mutual aid and the Mount Pleasant crew was put on standby.  The fire was contained to the unattached garage.  Firefighters were on the scene from about 3:15 to 4:30 pm.

Girls’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant at Osky, Other Area Action

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant girls’ basketball team (1-3) will aim to get back into the win column tonight when they travel to face Oskaloosa in a nonconference matchup.

The Panthers have lost two straight to Fort Madison and West Burlington after beating Ottumwa.

Andrea Lopreato is off to a great start for Curt Watson’s group, leading the team with 16.8 points per game along with nine rebounds and nearly five assists. She’s been as advertised in her junior season.

Senior Kenna Lamm has taken a leap as well. The dynamic guard scored 20 points against Fort Madison — a season high for her —- and is averaging 14 per game and shooting 43% from three-point land.

Oskaloosa is 2-1 on the season, with wins over Knoxville and Fairfield sandwiched around a tough loss to top-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes.

The Indians are paced by junior guard Presley Blommers and her 19.3 points per game.

Aubree Blanco averages 10 points per game as does Addison Carter.

Mount Pleasant has won three consecutive against Oskaloosa, including eight of the last nine.

Tonight’s game will tip at 7:00 p.m.

Men’s College Basketball: Cornell’s Magnani Named MWC Player of the Week

Mount Vernon — Cornell senior guard and former Mount Pleasant standout Jordan Magnani has been selected Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball Performer of the Week.

Magnani was pivotal to Cornell’s 2-0 opening week in conference play as the Rams claimed home wins over Illinois College (82-75) and Lake Forest (73-68), teams projected in the top four of the MWC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

The Rams (4-3 overall), winners of three straight, are alone atop the MWC standings with a 2-0 mark.

Magnani averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and shot 56.5 percent from the field in the two wins.

The fourth-year starter sank four 3-pointers and went 7-of-10 from the foul line.

Cornell is back in action Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. road game against Grinnell (5-4 overall, 1-2 MWC).

Prep Wrestling: Area Matmen in Action Tonight

KILJ — Two area sites will host area wrestlers tonight in a bit of a quiet Tuesday night of wrestling.

Starting at English Valleys, Columbus Community/Winfield-Mount Union will take on Highland, Moravia and English Valleys in a quad.

The Wildcats are led by No. 2 ranked 120-pounder Lane Scorpil, who figures to contend for the gold this winter in his senior season.

Wrestling there will get underway at 6:00 p.m.

Elsewhere, Fort Madison will host a varsity double dual getting underway at 5:30 p.m.

The Bloodhounds will host Burlington, Mediapolis and Wapello.

Mediapolis senior Quinten Aney is the top dog for the Bulldogs. Aney has skyrocketed to No. 3 in the latest 132-pound Class 1A rankings after earning a medal a year ago.

Gavin Wiseman is the lone ranked wrestler for the Bloodhounds.

Local Man Burned in Tractor Explosion

A member of the Midwest Old Threshers Board of Directors is hospitalized in the burn unit at the University of Iowa. Alan Buckert of Mount Pleasant suffered second degree burns to his head, face, arm, and hands while working on a tractor. The accident occurred over the weekend on his family’s farm near Hamilton, Illinois.
