Anna Marie Baxter, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, November 6, 2025 at her residence.

Anna Marie (Woodsmall) Baxter was born December 6, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of Paul “Jake” and Alverta (Hill) Woodsmall.

Anna Marie was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, a member of the Class of 1965. For 20 years, Anna Marie was a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant. She retired from her career as a CNA from Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.

She attended Harvest Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Anna Marie had a deep love of music and enjoyed singing. She was also known for her great fondness of reading. She dearly loved to spend time with her great grandchildren and their families.

Those thankful for sharing in Anna Marie’s life include 2 children – William Alex Baxter and Gayle Ann Baxter, both of Mt. Pleasant; her care giver, Jessica Sandifer of Mt. Pleasant; her siblings – Jerry Woodsmall and his wife Karla of Lockridge, IA, Tim Woodsmall of Illinois and Ron Woodsmall of Texas; her grandchildren – Lili Baxter, Keisha Gardner and her husband Dalton, Llovani Baxter-Martin. Meliah Gillespie, Dillion Gillespie, Amaya Gillespie and Kimberly Mikita; her great grandchildren – Wendel & Kolton Gardner, Blesslyn Ewoldt, Malaysia Cowick, Atreus Cowick, Ryker Doss and Rowyn Doss.

Her parents, siblings Larry Woodsmall, Paul Woodsmall, Tom Woodsmall and Kevin Woodsmall and a grandson, Christopher Baxter, precede Anna Marie in death.

A funeral service for Anna Marie will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 14 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Court Fischer, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, will officiate. Burial will be in the Burge Cemetery, New London. Friends may call from 1-7 PM on Thursday, November 13 at the Kimzey Funeral Home. The family will not be present.

New London Schools to Host Veterans Day Ceremony November 11

The New London Community School District invites all veterans and community members to join students and staff for the annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in the Charles Lorber Gymnasium. 

The program will include participation from K-12 students and staff as they honor the service and sacrifices of local veterans. 

Prior to the ceremony, veterans and their spouses are invited to enjoy refreshments at 9:00 a.m. in the New London High School Commons. Guests may enter through the gym lobby. 

The district welcomes the public to attend this meaningful event recognizing those who have served and continue to serve our nation. 

Keokuk High School Invites Area Seniors to 38th Annual Christmas Dinner

Keokuk High School will host its 38th Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the First Christian Church, 3476 Main Street in Keokuk. 

The event welcomes all area residents age 60 and older for an afternoon of good food, fellowship, and holiday entertainment. Doors open at 11 a.m., with serving beginning at noon. 

The annual tradition is made possible through the cooperation of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Food Service Department, Transportation, and numerous special volunteers. Guests will also enjoy performances by the Keokuk High School Band and Vocal Music Department. 

Bus transportation will be provided, with several pickup times beginning at 11:20 a.m., and return trips will be available following the meal.

In the event of inclement weather, the postponement date will be Thursday, December 11. 

This long-standing holiday tradition continues to bring together students and community members to celebrate the season and show appreciation for local seniors.

Postseason High School Football

The UNI-Dome will house the semifinals of the State Playoffs starting on Wednesday, November 12th, with Eight-Player leading off the path to the championships. Here’s the matchups.

For the Eight-Player semifinals, #4 Audubon will take on #1 Bishop Garrigan at 10 am, while #2 Woodbine will take on #3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck at the conclusion of game one.

Class A will feature three undefeated teams as Saint Ansgar will compete against Wapsie Valley at 10 am. MMCRU will tangle with West Sioux at 1 pm on Thursday, November 13th.

Class 1A will play on Friday, November 14th, with Grundy Center taking on Regina Catholic at 10 am and West Lyon facing off against South Hardin at 1 pm. 

The Class 2A semifinals will lead off Saturday, November, 15th, with Osage and Van Meter playing at 10 am and Kuemper Catholic squaring off against Wilton at 1 pm. The Class 3A semifinals will follow with Bishop Heelan kicking off against Wahlert Catholic at 4 pm and Solon taking on Nevada at 7 pm.

The Class 4A semifinals will round out the Thursday slate with Sergeant Bluff-Luton competing with Pella at 4 pm and Xavier squaring off against Newton at 7 pm.

Lastly, the Class 5A semifinals are set for Friday with Dowling Catholic facing off against Valley at 4 pm and Waukee Northwest dueling with Iowa City Liberty at 7 pm.

High School Girls’ Basketball

Mediapolis will travel to Burlington on Friday, November 14th, for a scrimmage. 

Mt. Pleasant will host their jamboree on November 17th with Columbus, Mediapolis, and Winfield-Mt. Union also participating.

New London will scrimmage against Fairfield and Van Buren County will take on Sigourney at a jamboree held by Cardinal on November 18th.

Southeastern Community College

The women’s basketball team will host Black Hawk College at 5 pm on Wednesday, November 12th.

The men’s basketball team could not buy a basket in the second half of their meet up with State Fair Community College, falling 82-62. Jacob Franklin scored 12 points as the team shot just 29% from three-point land in the loss. The Blackhawks will tangle with Highland Community College on Wednesday at home at 7 pm.

College Football

It took an Aiden Flora 79-yard punt return touchdown in the 4th quarter but Iowa State is finally back in the win column after clawing their way past TCU over the weekend 20-17. Carsen Hansen ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for the Cyclones. Iowa State is now on a bye week. 

Iowa nearly edged out another close contest in the Big Ten but in another heart breaker the Hawkeyes watched the win slip through their fingers in an 18-16 loss to #9 Oregon over the weekend. In all three loses this season, the Hawkeyes have either led or been tied with their opponent in the fourth quarter. Mark Gronowski scored both touchdowns for the Hawkeyes. Iowa returns to action on Saturday, November 15th, in a road showdown against #19 USC at 2:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will be on the call.

College Basketball

The #21 Iowa women’s team broke a program record yesterday in a 119-43 romp of Evansville. Layla Hays led the team with 20 points as Ava Heiden produced another double-double in the largest margin of victory in school history. The Hawkeyes will take on Drake on Thursday, November 13th, at 7:30 pm at home.

The Iowa men’s team will host Xavier on Friday, November 14th, at 7 pm.

The #14 Iowa State women’s team shattered Sacred Heart yesterday, 99-34. Five Cyclones finished the game in double figures with Audi Crooks tabbing 21 points in the victory. The Cyclones will face off against Valparaiso on Wednesday, November 12th, at 6:30 pm at home.

The #16 Iowa State men’s team will take on Mississippi State tonight at 7 pm on the road.

Iowa State University Extension to Host Women in Ag Leadership Conference December 3–4

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Women in Ag Leadership Conference will take place December 3–4, inviting participants from across Iowa and beyond to engage in a dynamic program of learning, networking, and inspiration.

Cherrill A. White

Cherrill A. White, 86, of Winfield, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the Henry County Health Care Center in Mount Pleasant. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at the Winfield United Methodist Church. Following the funeral service, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the church. Burial will be in the Winfield Scott Township Cemetery at a later date. Cherrill Ann Deal was born on April 13, 1939, in Burlington, Iowa the daughter of Floyd and Dorothy (Wintermeyer) Deal. She was a graduate of Winfield High School and attended Cornell College. On April 10, 1960, Cherrill was united in marriage to Larry White in Winfield. She worked as a CNA at the Henry County Health Center, Public Health within Henry County and retired from the University of Iowa. Following retirement, Cherrill worked at Hy-Vee in Mount Pleasant in the floral department. Cherrill was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church her entire life, the Birthday Club and T.T.T. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed directing the Church choirs, Easter Cantatas, gardening, traveling and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s school events. Cherrill was known for her faith and community involvement.

Cherrill will be deeply missed by Larry of Winfield; her children, Mark (Joanna) White of West Chester, Scott (Stephanie) White of Winfield and Carrie (Trent) Hobbs of Mount Pleasant; grandchildren, Jesse, Alexandra, Caleb, Cassie, Nicole, Brandon, Gabe, Makenzie, Madysinn, Jeremy and Tyler; 20 great-grandchildren and sister, Delaine Deal of North Carolina.

Cherrill was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dennis Deal.

Hy-Vee Extends $3 Family Meals and Breakfast Buffet Through Nov. 14

Hy-Vee will continue offering $3 family meals at all store locations with hot food service through Friday, November 14. The program provides an affordable dining option for families, with meals served daily and both dine-in and takeout choices available. Children ages 12 and under can enjoy the same meals for free. 

The full $3 meal schedule for the week includes: 

  • Monday, Nov. 10: Chicken alfredo with penne and garlic toast (4–7 p.m.) 
  • Tuesday, Nov. 11: Chicken or pork with vegetables, steamed rice, appetizer, and fortune cookie* (4–7 p.m.) 
  • Wednesday, Nov. 12: Breakfast for Dinner featuring scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage links, fruit, and a cinnamon roll (4–7 p.m.) 
  • Thursday, Nov. 13: Chicken hind quarter with potato salad and a chocolate chip cookie (4–7 p.m.) 
  • Friday, Nov. 14: Sloppy Joe sandwich with seasoned green beans (4–7 p.m.) 

*In locations without HyChi, the meal will be two chicken tenders, mashed potatoes, and corn. 

In addition to the meal program, Hy-Vee has launched a register round-up campaign allowing customers to support local food pantries by rounding up their purchases at checkout. Shoppers can also purchase $5 and $10 food bank donation bundles, which will go directly to local pantries to assist families in need. 

These community efforts follow Hy-Vee’s recent $100,000 corporate donation to Feeding America, along with additional food donations being distributed to local food pantries across the region.
