Prep Girls’ Soccer: A Tie Puts Two Southeast Conference Teams in Class 2A’s Top 15

Prep Soccer- The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their fifth soccer rankings for the season with the postseason slated to start near the end of the month. After starting the year with zero teams in the top 15, the Southeast Conference (SEC) now has two teams within the Class 2A rankings.

It only seems right to elevate the only Iowa team that has somewhat blemished the record of #14 Burlington. Fort Madison protected their doghouse this past Monday and tied the Grayounds at 2 with Kiera Lake and Hadley Wolfe finding the back of the net compared to Kiara Winski scoring both goals for Burlington.

That tie and a poor 7-1 loss from previously ranked #15 Clear Creek Amana to #13 Solon last week gave Fort Madison enough momentum to take over the vacated spot, despite a 5-0 loss to Burlington back in mid-April.

Of course, it would be pertinent to mention that Fort Madison has rattled off four consecutive wins since then, outscoring their opponents 29 to 1 in the process. Wolfe is looking to make it back-to-back years of a Bloodhound receiving SEC Player of the Year as she has nabbed 22 goals and 10 assists for the year on 32.8% shooting.

For Burlington, after not allowing a goal in their first five wins of the season, the Grayhounds have not lost but they have allowed seven goals in their past five games, including a narrow 3-2 victory over Washington, who currently sports a losing record.

The road does not get easier for them either with a Friday, May 8th, road showdown against Class 1A’s #1 Davenport Assumption. The Knights have rattled off six straight wins after losing to Class 3A’s #8 Pleasant Valley and #11 Cedar Rapids Kennedy by a combined three goals.
