High School Softball
Holy Trinity Catholic hosted their Classic over the weekend and the hosts finished the weekend with a 2-1 record. The Crusaders collected a 5-1 victory over Van Buren County and an 11-0 shutout over West Burlington/Notre Dame, but fell to Mt. Pleasant, 14-3. Izzy Sloat slapped two doubles for four RBIs in the victory. The Panthers later fell to Fort Madison, 8-0.
Van Buren County and West Burlington/Notre Dame finished the weekend slate with a 1-2 record, with the Warriors losing 7-6 to Don Bosco, while taking down New London 14-1. Ava Loeffler led the Warriors for the weekend with four RBIs. The Falcons shutout Don Bosco 9-0 and lost 8-5 to Fort Madison. Madelyn Thomas clubbed a double for an RBI in the victory over the Dons.
The Tigers ended the weekend without a victory, losing 10-0 to Fort Madison and 17-6 to Don Bosco.
Mt. Pleasant will host a doubleheader against Keokuk tonight with game one at 5:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:15 pm. Panther head coach Curtis Bjork is looking for the same team to show up that beat Washington last week,
“Yeah, more of the same, honestly. Like competing one pitch at a time and bringing this energy every night. We haven’t been this tough every night, and we came tonight. So if we can do that every night, we’ll be successful.”

Danville will take on Louisa-Muscatine tonight at 6 pm at home.
Central Lee will face off against New London on the road tomorrow, June 9th, at 7 pm.
WACO will travel to Pekin tomorrow at 7 pm.
Columbus will host Louisa-Muscatine at 7 pm on Thursday, June 11th.

High School Postseason Soccer
The 2026 boys’ Class 2A state championship was decided over the weekend and with only three minutes remaining in the second half, Zachary Schrader netted the game-winning goal to give #1 Gilbert their second consecutive state championship in a 1-0 final over #2 Des Moines Christian.
The 2026 girls’ state tournament will start today.
Local Summer Athletic Camps
Mt. Pleasant girls’ basketball is offering up a camp for any girls’ basketball players entering 3rd through 12th grades from June 23rd through the 25th located at the Mt. Pleasant High School Gym. The camp will focus on the fundamentals and introduce team concepts employed by the high school’s system.

Southeastern Community College
The Southeastern Blackhawks Youth MVP Baseball Camp has opened up for registration. The camp is open for youths ages 7 to 12, running June 15th through the 17th from 9 am to noon. The camp will take place at Wagner Athletic Complex on the West Burlington Campus and will cost $150 for the full three day camp. The Burlington Bees have now lost their last four after falling to the O’Fallon Hoot, 7-5, and the Quincy Doggy Paddlers, 11-9, over the weekend slate. Lucas Krebs clobbered a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs last night. The Bees will travel to play the Alton River Dragons tomorrow, June 9th, at 6:35 pm.
The Clinton LumberKings have now won their last three matchups after defeating the Quincy Doggy Paddlers, 10-3, over the weekend. Their matchup against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp was postponed yesterday. The LumberKings will hit the road for a rematch against the Doggy Paddlers tomorrow with first pitch at 6:30 pm.

2000 – The Dallas Stars and the New Jersey Devils played the NHL’s longest scoreless game in Stanley Cup finals history. The fifth game of the series lasted 106 minutes and 21 seconds. The game ended with a goal by Mike Modano that allowed the Stars to play a game six back in Dallas.
