Steven Keith Hinkle

Steven Keith Hinkle, 77, of Wayland, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2026, at Parkview Home in Wayland. He was born March 19, 1949 in Washington, Iowa, to John C. and Helen Wenger Hinkle. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1967 and joined the United States Air Force for four years, spending one year in Vietnam, and was discharged as a sergeant. After completing his service, he worked at Metromail for a short time, then spent 33 years with the Henry County Road Maintenance Department.

Steve married JoAnn Elizabeth Bannier Hartman on July 12, 1981 in Swedesburg and just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. He was a farmer, through and through, loved animals, especially horses, enjoyed playing and watching golf, raised American Saddlebred horses, was a meticulous bookkeeper, and was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Wayland; daughter Lori (Byron) Johns of Gower, Missouri; grandson Bradley Johns and his brother Gary Hinkle of Bremen, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents.

According to his wishes, his body was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25 at the Green Mound Church, Wayland with his nephew Bill Ritzman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at the Green Mound Cemetery with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard. A light luncheon will immediately follow at the church.

A memorial has been established for the Green Mound Church.
