Donald H. Rude, 82, of Fairfield, went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 21, 2026, surrounded by his family after a short but well-fought battle with cancer. Funeral services honoring his life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Fairfield, IA with Pastor Craig Zuithoff officiating. Cremation will take place following the service with burial to be in the Batavia Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home and last until the time of service. Memorial contributions in Don’s honor may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Don was born on June 5, 1944, in New Boston, Illinois, to Paul E. Rude Sr. and Nellie Evangeline (Wallingford) Rude. In 1963, Uncle Sam sent him to Yale University, where he learned four years’ worth of Chinese in just eight months before serving as an intelligence codebreaker in the United States Air Force on the island of Okinawa until 1966. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Shirley Ann Chapman. They were married on June 11, 1967, and settled in Fairfield in 1968, where together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and community.
Don spent nearly 30 years carrying mail throughout the Fairfield area, a career that perfectly matched his love for people. In retirement, he enjoyed delivering flowers before proudly working alongside his son, Chris, in his business delivering products and assisting customers. One of his greatest joys was hauling members of the Amish community, many of whom he loved dearly and considered family. Whether he was delivering mail, flowers, or lending a helping hand, Don’s favorite part of any job was never the work itself, it was the people and the friendships he made along the way.
Don’s greatest legacy was not measured by what he accumulated, but by the lives he touched. He never met a stranger, welcoming everyone with a warm smile, a listening ear, and a generous heart. His unwavering faith in God guided the way he lived, loved, and served others.
Above all, Don was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His family was the joy of his life, and he found his greatest happiness in watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and sharing in everyday moments together. He especially cherished umpiring his granddaughters’ softball games, proudly cheering them on from behind the plate. Known for his quick wit and unforgettable one-liners, Don had a special way of making people laugh and feel at ease. His kindness, generosity, unwavering faith, and genuine love for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Don is survived by his sons, David Rude (Deon) and Chris Rude (Nikki); his cherished grandchildren, Becca Klett (Jesse), Jessie Shaier (Sagi), and Brandi Adam (Jacob); and his beloved great-grandchildren, AJay, Austin, Natalie, Kinley, Kooper, and Lucas.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Shirley Ann Rude; his parents, Paul E. Rude Sr. and Nellie Evangeline (Wallingford) Rude; his brothers, Kenny, John, Tom, and Gene Rude; and his sister, Ann Wallingford.
A life well lived leaves footprints on countless hearts. Don’s footprints can be found in the family he cherished, the friends he made, the community he faithfully served, and the unwavering faith that guided him home. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever celebrated.
