High School Girls’ Tennis
Burlington Notre Dame will face off against Albia on Thursday, August 6th, on the road.
Mt. Pleasant’s season opener will be a road contest against the Nikes on August 10th.
Fairfield will start their season at home against Keokuk on August 10th.
High School Football
In a preview for District 5 of 8-Player football, Iowa Valley will attempt to make it three-straight district titles after going a combined 18-3 over the last two seasons and a perfect 10-0 against district foes. The Tigers will again prove a tough team to stop on offense with the return of two-time All-District Offensive MVP, Nolan Kriegel, who turned in 56 total touchdowns last season.
WACO will attempt to make it seven straight seasons of earning a playoff berth. The Warriors started out of the gates fast, winning their first three games before dropping their final six contests with five of their opponents scoring over 50 points. Expect Hayden Shelman to shoulder most of the offensive burden after breaking out for over 1,200 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns last year. The Warriors will contend with Central City on August 28th at home.
The Wolves turned in a 2-5 record last year and just missed out on the postseason. Winfield-Mt. Union had no problems scoring, producing 30 points per game but gave up nearly 50 points in return. Losing Max Edwards will be tough for the team, after leading the team in receiving touchdowns and tackles for loss, and Grant Anderson, who was a First Team Offensive Lineman; still the team returns key playmakers in quarterback Cody Milks and wide receiver Tayson Samuels to provide a spark on offense. Winfield-Mt. Union will host Easton Valley for their season opener on August 28th.
Local Athletic Camps
Wapello will be holding a youth football camp for students entering 3rd through 8th grade starting tonight and running through the 6th from 4 to 5:30 pm. The camp will cost $25 and includes a t-shirt. If you have any questions, then email coach Tony Johnson at tony.johnson@wapellocsd.org.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hold its youth football camp tomorrow, August 4th, through the 6th for 2nd through 6th graders from 9 am to 10 am. The camp will cost $30 and each camper will receive a t-shirt.

The Winfield-Mt. Union football camp for 7th through 12th graders will begin tonight and run through the 6th from 5 to 7 pm.
Danville High School will be hosting the Soukup Basketball Camp August 7th, going from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and August 8th and 9th from 2 to 5 pm for boys and girls entering 3rd through 8th grades. The camp will cost $60 per camper.

Mt. Pleasant Cross Country
Summer runs are underway for the Mt. Pleasant Cross Country team. These runs are optional but a great way to run with others and get in shape for the fall season. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.
On Mondays, the runs will take place at 6:30 am at the Old Threshers Museum Theatre. Wednesdays will be high school speed day at 7 am at Mapleleaf and Tuesdays and Thursdays will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm.
The runs will continue through the middle of August until the Mt. Pleasant Cross County camp. If you have any questions, you can contact Coach Lyle Murray at 319-850-0867.
Southeastern Community College
The women’s soccer team will host Indian Hills Community College on Saturday, August 8th, at 3 pm.
The men’s soccer team will start the season against Bradley University on August 11th on the road.
Prospect League
The Burlington Bees advanced to the postseason after sweeping the Quincy Doggy Paddlers on Saturday, winning game one 15-14 and taking game two 11-1. Lucas Krebs smacked a home run for two RBIs in game one, while Rowan Bergeron clubbed his own home run for four RBIs in game two.
However, in a rematch last night, the Doggy Paddlers got their revenge and knocked the Bees out of the postseason in a 10-6 final. Christian Graves hit a home run and led the team with three RBIs in the loss. The Bees finished with a 34-23 record overall.
The Clinton LumberKings finished the season with a canceled contest. The LumberKings turned in a 32-18 record for the season.
