High School Girls’ Tennis
Burlington Notre Dame will face off against Albia tomorrow, August 6th, on the road.
Mt. Pleasant’s season opener will be a road contest against the Nikes on August 10th.
Fairfield will start their season at home against Keokuk on August 10th.
High School Football
In a preview for Class 2A District 6, Mid-Prairie will look to run it back as District champions, going a perfect 6-0, and 9-2 overall, last season. The Golden Hawks look to return Brooks Weber, their starting quarterback who threw 30 touchdowns this past season, but will need to find a new running back to take over for Hudson Ehrenfelt.
Mediapolis produced another playoff season, which included a first-round upset of Centerville, after starting the season 0-2. The Bulldogs eventually found their way on the ground with the team rushing for 1,590 yards and 24 touchdowns. Brock Spears will most likely take the bulk of the carries, while Quincy King will bring another year of experience underneath center. The Bulldogs will start the year at home against Mt. Pleasant on August 28th at 7:30 pm.
West Burlington/Notre Dame struggled in district play, going 1-4, resulting in a 3-5 record overall. The Falcons might see the most improvement, as they set to return Kellan Porter, their starting quarterback, and Jayden Nanthan, who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, along with their leading tackler in Garrett Bence, who made 69.5 wrap-ups. The Falcons will open the season against Danville on August 28th at 7 pm on the road.
Lastly, Central Lee will look to improve upon a 2-6 record overall and an 0-5 mark in the district. The Hawks will attempt to lean on Brett Cook, who provides the team with a dual-threat quality. The defense looks to bring back four of their top six tacklers, as this roster will have a large senior presence. Central Lee will take on Van Buren County on the road to start the season at 7 pm on August 28th.
Local Athletic Camps
Wapello’s youth football camp for 3rd through 8th graders will continue through tomorrow, August 6th, from 4 to 5:30 pm. If you have any questions, then email coach Tony Johnson at tony.johnson@wapellocsd.org.
Winfield-Mt. Union will hold its youth football camp today through tomorrow for 2nd through 6th graders from 9 am to 10 am. The Winfield-Mt. Union football camp for 7th through 12th graders will continue through tomorrow from 5 to 7 pm.
Danville High School will be hosting the Soukup Basketball Camp August 7th, going from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and August 8th and 9th from 2 to 5 pm for boys and girls entering 3rd through 8th grades. The camp will cost $60 per camper.

New London will be holding their Youth Tigers Volleyball Camp Monday, August 10th, through Wednesday, August 12th, for players entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. The camp costs $50 and the campers will get a T-shirt. Kindergarteners through 2nd graders will practice from 10 am to 11 am and 3rd through 6th graders will go from 10 am to 11:30 am.

Danville Parents Meeting
Danville will holding their Fall Sports Parent Meetings over the next several weeks with Junior High Football meeting tonight at 5:30 pm at the football field, while cross country will meet in the choir/band room at 6 pm tomorrow, August 6th.
Mt. Pleasant Cross Country
This is the last week of summer runs, as the fall season draws near. The runs are available to anyone entering 7th through 12th grades. Coaches may not be present at every run, as they are often led by upperclassmen.
Wednesdays will be high school speed day at 7 am at Mapleleaf and tomorrow the run will take place at Saunders Park by the swimming pool at 7 pm.

Southeastern Community College
The women’s soccer team will host Indian Hills Community College on Saturday, August 8th, at 3 pm.
The men’s soccer team will start the season against Bradley University on August 11th on the road.
Prospect League
The conference championships played out last night and the Cape Catfish will face off against the Terre Haute Rex for the Prospect League Championship starting tomorrow, August 6th.
The Rex slugged their way to an 11-5 victory over the Lafayette Aviators in the Eastern Conference championship game with five extra base hits compared to the Aviators’ two.
The Quincy Doggy Paddlers had the defending champions on the ropes in the Western Conference finals, scoring the first two runs of the game but they were unable to keep up the pressure, losing 8-5.
It is a best-of-three championship series with first pitch at 6:30 pm with Terre Haute acting as the hosts for game one and game three if needed.

1960 – For the first time two major league baseball clubs traded managers. Detroit traded Jimmy Dykes for Cleveland’s Joe Gordon.
2013 – Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig issued a 211-game suspension to Alex Rodriguez (New York Yankees) for possession of banned performance-enhancing drugs. The number of games was reduced to 162 by an arbitrator in January 2014.
