Southeast Iowa will enjoy a much-needed break from the rain today, with mainly sunny skies, lower humidity and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to lower 80s.
The pleasant conditions will not last long, however, as another round of thunderstorms could move through the region Tuesday ahead of a cold front.
The National Weather Service says storm chances will increase Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening. A few storms could become severe, with damaging winds of 60 miles per hour or greater, hail and heavy rainfall among the primary concerns. Frequent lightning will also be possible.
Forecasters stress that confidence in severe weather remains fairly low. Morning storms and lingering cloud cover could reduce the amount of energy available for stronger storms later in the day.
Mount Pleasant has already received 32.48 inches of precipitation this year—7.23 inches above the year-to-date average of 25.25 inches.
Residents should continue monitoring the forecast and be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued. KILJ will provide updates as conditions develop.
