More than 120 people safely evacuated a Burlington hotel after part of the building collapsed early Saturday morning.
The Burlington Fire Department was called to the Comfort Suites at 1780 Stonegate Center Drive shortly after 5 a.m. when the hotel’s fire alarm activated.
Firefighters discovered that the east portion of the building’s two-story section had collapsed over the ballroom area. The collapse did not affect the adjoining three-story hotel section, allowing all 122 guests and employees to safely leave the building.
No injuries were reported.
The entire hotel has been declared uninhabitable until its fire alarms, sprinkler system, electrical service and other required building systems are restored and inspected.
Structural engineers are being brought in to evaluate the property. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
The Burlington Fire Department was assisted by Alliant Energy and Gas, Gibbar Electric, the Burlington building inspector, Burlington Waterworks, the Burlington Streets Department and DESCOM.
