Armed Suspect Remains at Large Following Muscatine Officer Shooting

A large-scale search continues for Mark Lee Jackson, 59, of Des Moines, who is accused of shooting a Muscatine police officer Friday evening.

Police say the incident began shortly after 5 p.m. when a Muscatine County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop Jackson’s vehicle near Benham Avenue and Nebraska Street. Jackson allegedly continued driving at a high rate of speed through residential neighborhoods before crashing and fleeing on foot.

During a foot pursuit, Jackson allegedly fired toward officers, striking a Muscatine police officer in the elbow. Police say shots were also fired toward an area where children and other bystanders were present. No civilians were injured.

The officer has been released from the hospital, is recovering at home and is expected to make a full recovery.

Sixteen agencies, K-9 teams and drones have devoted more than 1,000 hours to searching a roughly 120-acre area where Jackson was last seen. A cash reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Jackson is described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall and approximately 145 pounds, with blue eyes and thinning gray hair. He has active warrants for parole violation and second-degree theft.

Jackson should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him should not approach him and should immediately call 911. Information can also be provided to the Muscatine Police Major Crimes Unit at 563-263-9922.
