Wellmans Receive Brownfield Ag Youth Award

Each year, at this time, Brownfield Ag News, of which KILJ is a long time affiliate, sponsors the Ag Youth awards.  Brownfield and KILJ partner to support local youth by choosing two recipients and making this presentation. The award is presented to a young lady and a young man recognizing them for their various accomplishments whether those be in school, 4H, or other areas of interest. But also for the leadership they have shown.  A belt buckle award and a Wal Mart Gift card for their 4H clubs is presented to each recipient. This year our award winners in Lee County are twins Trey and Maddie Wellman whose parents are Deb and Dusty Wellman of rural Houghton. Both have grown up in the show ring mostly showing cattle.  They own cows and embryo donor cows, operating their own breeding business. Both have been active participants in 4H and in the Central Lee FFA Chapter. Maddie was their FFA chapter’s president and Trey was vice-president. They are both members of the Lee County 4H Teen Council. The twins graduated this spring from Central Lee High School and are headed to Iowa State University. Trey was a page in the Iowa Legislature. He would like to combine his love of politics and his agriculture knowledge and plans to major in political science and ag policy. Maddie plans to major in agronomy and animal science. Maddie is also the outgoing Lee County Fair Queen.  KILJ’s news director Theresa Rose made the Ag Youth Award presentation at opening ceremonies at the Lee County Fair July 6.
