According to a post by the Keokuk Police Department, At 4:59pm yesterday, Officers responded to a call for service in which the reporting party stated shots were fired. This is believed to be a targeted incident and there was not an ongoing threat to the general public.
Suspect in Burlington Shooting Turns Himself In
The Burlington Police Department has announced that a suspect in a Burlington shooting incident has turned himself in.
16-year-old Hamazah Tandia turned himself in to authorities on Sunday, July 30th.
According to a news release, at 6:14 PM Tuesday, July 25th, Burlington Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of South 8th and Elm Streets on a report of gunshots. Officers were told a male had fired shots at a silver Ford Edge as it drove by the intersection. Numerous shell casings were found in the intersection but the targeted vehicle had left the scene.
A short time later, employees from the Dollar General Store located at 1015 Division advised Terrance Gordon, who arrived there with a gunshot wound to his torso. Officers discovered the injured male had arrived there in a silver Ford Edge that had been struck several times by bullets. The victim was transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
During the investigation, officers were told 17-year-old Immanuel Johnson, and 16-year-old Hamazah Tandia, were involved in the shooting. Detectives were able to observe video footage from a vehicle’s dash camera that showed Johnson hand a handgun off to Tandia, who then shot into the vehicle numerous times.
Officers located Johnson and took him into custody after a brief foot chase, and he was found to be in possession of a handgun at the time of his apprehension. Tandia has not been located but arrest warrants were obtained for his arrest.
Johnson was charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon.
Tandia had warrants for Attempted Murder, Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapon, and Willful Injury.
Burlington Garage Fire
According to a news release, at 3:37 AM Thursday, July 27th, the Burlington Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 1305 Corse Street in Burlington. Firefighters arrived at 3:43 Am to find a detached garage fully engulfed in flames.
The two vehicles adjacent to the garage also sustained damage from the fire.
The garage is considered a total loss. The property and its contents are insured.
Eleven initial Burlington firefighters responded to the call. A box alarm was struck, which resulted in calling in 10 off-duty Burlington Firefighters. West Burlington Fire Department responded with automatic aid. Alliant Gas and Energy and the Burlington Police Department assisted on the scene.
The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined and not considered suspicious.
No injuries were reported.
Mount Pleasant House Fire During Extreme Temperatures
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, emergency crews from Mt. Pleasant, New London, and Salem responded to reports of a house fire in the 400-block of North Main Street.
While the initial fire located on the first level of the two-story home was quickly knocked down by Mt. Pleasant and New London crews, a total of 25 firefighters spent approximately three hours going through the home to check for hot spots. Extra caution was taken considering the extreme temperatures experienced last week as well as smoke from the fire. Sadly the family’s dog, Tank, was lost in the fire.

Judy Campbell
Judy Kay Campbell, 66, of Mount Pleasant went home to be with Jesus on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She was surrounded by her beloved family as they sang “It is Well.”
Judy was born September 7, 1956, in Washington, IA, the daughter of John Dill and Frances R. (Wittrig) Hulme. She graduated from WACO High School in 1974 and continued her education at AIB Business School. On December 23, 1978, Judy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Daniel Campbell, at Harmony Bible Church near Danville. The couple made Mount Pleasant their home for more than 44 years. Judy worked as a secretary at various businesses before working 17 years as Secretary to the Business Manager at the Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility, retiring in 2017.
Judy was a faithful and active member of Calvary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and served the church through her love for children by directing children’s choir and musicals and teaching Sunday School and Awana. She was a member of the Henry County Relay for Life Committee and participated in several Mount Pleasant Community Theater productions.
Judy enjoyed reading while cuddling with her sweet pup, Lily Bug. Shopping was a favorite of Judy’s; she always loved finding a good deal. She deeply loved spending time with family and friends and genuinely cared about getting to know people. Her family and friends loved her ornery personality and will never forget her wonderful hugs. Judy was a strong prayer warrior for those she loved so dearly. She was an example of a Godly woman, serving, helping, and encouraging all those around her. Her joyful, genuine, kind, and spunky spirit will be missed by all. Judy was truly a faithful and loving wife, mother, and friend.
Judy is survived by her husband, Dan; son, Scott (Jennifer) Campbell of New London; daughter, Sara Campbell of Mount Pleasant; two sisters, Joan Swift, Jalaine (Steve) Sandberg, one brother, Howard (Nancy) Hulme all of Rockford, Illinois; two brothers-in-law, Leonard (Dwanna) Schantz of Los Lunas, New Mexico, Dennis (Cindy) Campbell of Fulton, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jacqueline Schantz.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. Rev. Matthew Reno and Rev. Leonard Schantz will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-7 pm on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church where family will greet friends from 5-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to assist with medical and funeral expenses.
