AAA Weekly Fuel Report

The price of regular unleaded gasoline averaged $2.74 across Iowa this week according to AAA . Prices rose 4 cents from last week’s price and are down 2 cents from a year ago. The national average on Wednesday was $3.03, up 1 cent from last week’s price. Retail diesel prices in Iowa rose 4 cents this week with a statewide average of $3.29. One year ago, diesel prices averaged $3.74 in Iowa. The current Iowa diesel price is 22 cents lower than the national average of $3.51. Tips for saving energy on the road or at home are available at energy.gov and fueleconomy.gov.

Winter Solstice – Shortest Day of the Year!

The winter solstice is this weekend. Today will be the shortest day of the year.  The winter solstice only has eight hours and 11 minutes of sunlight. Starting Sunday, the days will grow longer.

The winter solstice in Mount Pleasant will occur at 3:20 AM. The sunrise and sunset times for that day are:

  • Sunrise: 7:26 AM
  • Sunset: 4:40 PM

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in most places north of the equator.  This moment marks the start of the winter season for the Northern Hemisphere.

Drought Conditions

Nearly 93 percent of Iowa is experiencing drought conditions currently. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor’s most recent report, 1.3 percent of Iowa is in severe drought located in the northwestern corner of the state, 63.13 percent is in moderate drought, and 92.8 percent is abnormally dry.  Portions of Henry, Louisa, Johnson, and Iowa counties are abnormally dry with some areas in moderate drought.

 

Jane Ann Mulford

Jane Ann Mulford, 66, of Decorah, IA and formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, December 19, 2024 at the Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, following a brief but courageous battle of cancer.

Jane was born June 17, 1958 in Aledo, IL. She was the daughter of Clifford Ray and Juanita Francis (Fisher) Mulford. She was raised in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Mt. Pleasant Community High School in 1976.

In June of 1976, Jane entered the United States Air Force. She was a Radar Technician and later a Weapons Control System Mechanic while residing in St. Louis. At one point in her military career, she was stationed in South Korea as a Radar Technician. After 4 years in service, she reenlisted into the Air National Guard. She was assigned to the 131st Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in Missouri in the guard. Jane was awarded the Air Reserve Forces Merit Service Award in March of 1984 and again in March of 1987. She was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in May of 1987,

Following her discharge, she remained in the St. Louis area and worked for the McDonald-Douglas Corporation. She returned to Mt. Pleasant and worked for Heatilator Industries. She retired in 2013 after completing her working career as a Correctional Officer for the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility.

Jane had the biggest heart to help anyone in need. Most especially, Jane had a deep and abiding love for pets of all sorts.

Those thankful for sharing in Jane’s life include 2 brothers and their wives – Douglas & Tammy Mulford and Craig & Jeanne Mulford, all of Mt. Pleasant; a brother-in-law, Lyle Riley of Wasilla, AK; 8 nieces and nephews – Scott Riley and Jeff Riley, both of Wasilla, Katie Jordan of Colorado Springs, CO, Jordan Mulford of Mt. Pleasant, Abbey Hendrickson of Cedar Falls, IA, Logan Mulford of Denver, CO, Zachary Mulford and Colin Mulford, both of Mt. Pleasant.

Her parents, sister Patricia Ruth Riley and infant brother, Edward Floyd Mulford precede Jane in death.

An open visitation will be from 12 Noon to 7 PM on Friday, December 27, 2024 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The family will not be present. Cremation rites have been entrusted to Kimzey Funeral Home, and burial of Jane’s ashes will be at a later date at the Columbus City Cemetery.

Vern E. Dorothy, 98, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant.

Walter L. “Shorty” Mullin

Walter L. “Shorty” Mullin, 88, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Shorty was born on July 23, 1936, on the family farm rural Olds, the son of Forrest Lyle and Leanna Elizabeth (Long) Mullin.  He graduated from Olds High School. Shorty was united in marriage to Beverly K. Alter on October 11, 1959 in Winfield.  Following his marriage he joined the United States Army on November 13, 1959 and was honorably discharged on February 20, 1962. He worked for the Henry County Supply CO-OP for 36 years, driving an LP truck.

He was a member of the Olds United Church, Eagles Club in Burlington, Mt. Pleasant Moose, serving on the invitation team, Big Creek Tractor Club’ serving as a board member and the Henry County Credit Union Board.

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his wife of 65 years, Bev and his children, Rick (Rita) Mullin of Mt. Pleasant and Randy (Kathy) Mullin of Mt. Union, his grandchildren, Marcus, Makenna and Elizabeth, his great grandchildren, Kamryn, Oaklyn and Thomas and his sister, Ann Conrad, of Olds.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Mullin and one sister, Marjorie Alliman.

A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Elaine Vass and Rev. Earl Swigart officiating. Following the service there will be a time of food and fellowship in the fellowship hall of the church where the family will greet friends.  Burial will be held at a later date in the Forest Home Cemetery.  Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.  The family will not be present.  Memorials may be directed in his memory to the Henry County Veterans Association or to Hope Haven in his memory.

Wanda Lee Reu

Wanda Lee Reu, 83, of Donnellson, Iowa passed away at 8:53 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2024 at Birkwood Village in Fort Madison.

She was born on July 28, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri, the daughter of Roy E. and Mary Gladys (Hamner) Young. On December 23, 1959, she married David Reu in Anson, Missouri. They would have celebrated sixty-five years of marriage this year.

She is survived by her husband David; daughter Angela Reu; son Leslie (Pam) Reu; six grandchildren: Kara (Nathan) Patefield, Hannah (Seth) Rosekopf, Leah Reu, Rebekah (Ryan) Epp, Benjamin (Stacia) Reu, and Josiah Reu; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Mary Ann (Krikor) Yesseyan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Stephen W. Reu and sister Betty Dunaway.

Wanda worked at State Central Savings Bank in Farmington, and Donnellson Implement in Donnellson. She was one of the founding members of the Bethel Bible Church in Argyle, where she loved teaching children and women’s bible study. She enjoyed writing and authored seven books. She also enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Bethel Bible Church, Rural Argyle, Iowa with Pastor Aaron Hand officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in Evangelical Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in her memory for Bethel Bible Church or Donnellson Fire & Rescue.
