Prep Volleyball: Mount Pleasant Wins, W-MU Falls, Other Prep Finals

Mount Pleasant 3, Burlington 1 

The Mount Pleasant volleyball team withstood a 16 kill, 12 dig performance from Burlington’s Anna Buxton, as the Panthers rolled to a 3-1 conference victory over the Greyhounds yesterday, at home.

Kenna Lamm paced the Panthers in kills, Ralyn Seberg was the assist leader, while Regan Seberg anchored the back row in digs.

Mount Pleasant will be off until this weekend when they take on Midland to begin to the Wilton Tournament.

Wapello 3, Winfield-Mount Union 1 

Bradie Buffington had nine kills while Morgan Grelk and Melina Oepping added six, but it was not enough as the Winfield-Mount Union Lady Wolves fell to Wapello last night.

Keely Malone had 26 assists despite the loss.

Lindsy Massner had 17 kills to pace the Arrows.

Winfield-Mount Union, now 4-3, will battle in the Wilton Tournament this weekend.

Mediapolis 3, Highland 1 

Mediapolis struck early and often as the Bullettes streaked to a 3-1 over Highland yesterday.

Hannah Wagenbach paced the Mediapolis attack with a match-high 13 kills.

Kennedy Welliver was sublime with the service all night long, providing a game-high 28 assists.

Mediapolis will hook up with Hillcrest Thursday night at home.

First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.

No. 1 Notre Dame 3, Central Lee 0 

Notre Dame, 1A’s top ranked club, bullied their way to a sweep victory defeating Central Lee 25-15, 25-13, 25-11.

Gabby Deery had 14 kills to spark the Nike offense, while Josie Bentz was an excellent two-way piece, chipping in with seven kills and 11 digs.

Jenna Bentz finished with 29 assists.

The defending state champions, now 14-4, will be off today before hosting Danville on Thursday.

Mount Pleasant — Under new head coach Hunter Davis, Iowa Wesleyan has announced the upcoming fall schedule for men’s and women’s cross country.

The Tiger cross country teams will open up their season in Decorah, Iowa, at the Luther All-American Cross Country Invitational this weekend, one of the Midwest’s premier meets.

Wesleyan currently has five competition dates scheduled, not including the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Conference Championships and other postseason opportunities.

The Tiger women return Allison Morris, a first-team All-Conference selection one year ago.

College Football: Iowa, Iowa State Both in Top-10

KILJ — This weekend’s Cy-Hawk Rivalry just got a little hotter as the AP Top-25 has moved Iowa into the top-10.

After a 34-6 thrashing of Indiana, the Hawkeyes have been moved up to No. 10.

Iowa State checks in at No. 9, down two spots after a nail-biting 16-10 win over FCS Northern Iowa.

Saturday’s game will kick at 3:30 p.m., you can listen on FM 105.5 for the Hawkeye feed, while the Cyclones feed can be heard on FM 98.5 and AM 1130.

KILJ — A wrap up of this past Friday’s high school football games:

Washington 22, Mount Pleasant 0 

Ethan Patterson had three total touchdowns as the Washington Demons defeated Mount Pleasant last Friday 22-0.

Patterson, who did not start the game, threw for touchdown passes of 15 and 18 yards — both to Jacob Miller.

The final score, Patterson’s third, came from eight yards out on a run to seal the final.

The Panthers managed to rally late but facing 2nd-and-goal from the six, Panther quarterback Carson Coleman was intercepted.

Mount Pleasant, now 0-2, will be back at home next week against Keokuk.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., pregame coverage will begin at 7:00 p.m. on FM-105.5.

Winfield-Mount Union 66, Iowa Valley 42

It was a happy homecoming in Winfield, as the Wolves rolled to a 66-42 win over Iowa Valley last Friday.

Sophomore phenom Cam Buffington finished with eight total touchdowns — four on the ground, four through the air — bringing his total to 18 through two games.

Buffington completed 10-of-15 passes for 267 yards and rushed for an additional 164 on 21 totes to lead the way.

Caleb Giese hauled in six catches for 185 yards, as well, as the Wolves improved to 2-0.

They’ll get a showdown matchup with New London next Friday, with kick set for 7:00 p.m.

No. 10 WACO 41, HLV 13 

N0. 10 WACO scored early and often as the Warriors steamrolled to yet another easy victory, taking down H-L-V 41-13 last Friday.

The win kept the Warriors unbeaten at 3-0.

Simeon Reichenbach led the way with 17 carries for 75 yards and two scores.

They’ll rest up before taking on English Valleys back at home this week.

H-L-V dropped to 1-2.

College Football: Wesleyan Beaten in Home Opener, Other Statewide Finals:

Mount Pleasant — Missouri Baptist scored 21 unanswered points in the second half as the Spartans pulled away for a 31-7 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday in Mount Pleasant. The Tigers played close for one half, trailing just 10-7 at recess, before turnovers doomed Wesleyan.

Freshman quarterback Gavin Esquivel completed 22-of-43 passes for the Tigers for 210 yards and a touchdown, but was picked twice.

His favorite target was Jaden Harris, who hauled in seven catches for 132 yards.

Braedin Ross had the lone touchdown for the Tigers.

Now 0-2, Wesleyan will try to right the ship this weekend when they take on Quincy University on the road.

Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country: Panthers Finish 5th at Pella Invite

Pella — The Mount Pleasant girls’ cross country team finished 5th overall out of 18 teams at last Saturday’s Pella Invite.

Abby Blint was the Panthers’ top finisher, taking 5th place overall. She ran 20:45.

Freshman Alexis Wagner went 22:06 good for 16th in her debut, while Belle Meador finished third on the team with a time of 23:16.

Mount Pleasant will be back in action on Thursday at Fairfield, for their first taste of conference action.
