Prep Softball: Highland, W-MU Ready for Dazzling Matchup

Winfield — It will be a dazzling matchup tonight when No. 15 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union hosts Highland in the semifinal round of the Class 1A Regional Playoffs.

The Lady Wolves looked strong in their opener, pushing past New London 10-0.

Highland blanked Lone Tree 5-0.

This will be the third meeting between the two programs this season with each team grabbing a game.

Highland enters play tonight 21-6.

Grace Batcheller has been the Huskies’ workhorse, starting 17 games, striking out 101 over 105.2 innings.

She struck out six in the team’s win over Lone Tree.

Meanwhile, the list of superlatives to use to describe the performance of Maddie Anderson is dwindling.

The superstar ace of the Lady Wolves was incredible again on Wednesday and will need her ‘A’ stuff again tonight.

Anderson allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out 15 against New London.

She eclipsed the career 1,000 strikeout mark earlier this season.

Prep Baseball: Mount Pleasant Splits with Knoxville, Other Area Finals

Knoxville 4, Mount Pleasant 2 

Mount Pleasant 12, Knoxville 10 

The Mount Pleasant baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader against Knoxville last night at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

In game one, Knoxville won 4-2.

Will Edeker suffered the loss, working 4.1 innings allowing four runs, two earned while walking six and striking out two.

Chase Williamson, Jack Johnson, Carter Amos and Zerek Venghaus each had hits.

Edeker drove in one.

In game two, Mount Pleasant brought out the thunder sticks, cratering Knoxville for 12 runs in a 12-10 win.

Chase Williamson and Zerek Venghaus each had two hits, with Williamson driving in three.

Jack Johnson earned the win out of the bullpen, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings, walking four and striking out two.

The split moved Mount Pleasant to 7-22.

College Football: Cyclones Tabbed for Second Place Finish in Big 12

Ames — The Iowa State Cyclone football team was picked to finish second in the Big 12 Media Preseason Poll, the league announced Thursday.

Iowa State finished with four first-place votes, while Oklahoma was tabbed as the preseason favorite with 35 first-place votes.

Texas, Oklahoma State and TCU rounded out the top-five.

Prep Softball: Mount Pleasant Loses in Heartbreaker, Danville Eliminated:

Keokuk 6, Mount Pleasant 5 

Mount Pleasant jumped out to a 4-0 lead but could not hold on as the Keokuk Chiefs rallied for six of the game’s next seven runs earning a walkoff 6-5 win last night at Joyce Park.

The win advanced them to Saturday’s second round, where they will take on Fairfield.

Grace Kelley had the big hit in a four run 2nd inning for the Panthers, a two run double.

Savana Walls, Ella McNamee and Emma Starr each had multi-hit nights, while Bethany Drury doubled.

Madison Helling was the losing pitcher for the Panthers, working 6.2 innings allowing six runs only three earned.

She walked five and struck out two.

Abby Thompson earned the win for Keokuk.

Mount Pleasant ends their season 1-37.

Keokuk improved to 8-25.

Van Buren County 12, Danville 2 

Isabel Manning had three hits and two runs batted in as Van Buren County raced out to a 12-2 win over Danville last night in a Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal.

The Warriors belted out 15 hits as a team with five other girls also registering multi-hit nights.

Chelsey Huff led the way with four runs batted in, Ivy Davidson drove in three.

Huff was also dynamite in the circle, allowing just two hits and an unearned run over four innings.

Ally Campbell pitched the final two innings striking out two allowing one unearned run.

The win moved Van Buren County into tonight’s semifinal round, where they’ll take on upstart Cardinal who upset Wapello on Wednesday night.

The top half of the bracket will see Louisa-Muscatine hook up with Iowa City Regina.

Prep Softball: Madie Anderson Leads Winfield to Victory, Wapello Upset

No. 15 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union 10, New London 0 

Madie Anderson allowed just one hit and struck out 15 hitters as the Winfield-Mount Union softball team, Class 1A’s 15th ranked program, ousted New London yesterday in a Class 1A, Region 8 second round matchup.

The Lady Wolves scored in every inning but one, using a four run 4th inning to break the game open.

Kayreana Sharar had three hits while Carlee Sloan and Anna Anderson each had pair of hits.

Madie Anderson drove in three.

The lone hit for New London came by Ashlyn McSorely in the 1st inning.

Elly Manning was the losing pitcher for the Tigers, who end their season 7-23.

Winfield-Mount Union, now 17-5, advance to play in Friday’s semifinal against Highland.

That game will be played in Winfield, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m.

Cardinal 4, No. 11 (2A) Wapello 3 

In an upset not many saw coming, unranked Cardinal took down Class 2A’s No. 11 Wapello 4-3 yesterday in a Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal in Wapello.

Sammy Ewart had three hits in three trips to lead the Arrows offensively, but it was not enough as Cardinal scrapped for the one run triumph.

Serah Shafer went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Cardinal, now 16-13, will await the winner of Van Buren County-Danville.

Wapello, a state qualifier two years ago, ends their 2021 campaign at 18-8.

No. 3 (2A) Louisa-Muscatine 2, West Branch 1 

Kylee Sanders punched through with a two-out RBI double in the 9th inning to help No. 3 Louisa-Muscatine walk off West Branch 2-1 in a Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal last night.

Sanders, the UNI recruit, was electric once again at the plate and in the circle, earning the win.

Louisa-Muscatine, now 19-8 after the first round scare, will host No. 14 Iowa City Regina Friday night.

First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

West Branch closed their season at 16-16.

Prep Softball: 4A Quarters Begin Tonight

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant softball team will open their postseason schedule tonight when they travel to take on Keokuk in the opener of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Panthers have lost 19 straight games since earning a 4-0 win over Mid-Prairie on June 15th.

Mount Pleasant was swept by Keokuk in their only set of matchups this season, losing 12-4 and 14-2 at Joyce Park.

Keokuk has lost 12 straight in their own regard, as they limp into the postseason at 7-25.

Tonight’s game will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Prep Baseball: Quiet Night of Baseball With Just Two Area Finals

Hillcrest Academy 8, Winfield-Mount Union 2 

Hillcrest Academy scored seven runs total in the 6th and 7th innings as the Ravens pulled away for an 8-2 win over Winfield-Mount Union last night.

London Schrock had two hits and two runs scored for the Ravens, while Luke Schrock drove in four, doubling and tripling.

London Schrock was the winning pitcher, striking out six over seven full innings.

Winfield scored their only two runs in the 4th inning.

The Wolves are now 2-22.

Hillcrest improved to 11-9.

Prep Baseball: Class 3A Pairings Released

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant baseball team now knows their opponent for the upcoming Class 3A playoffs.

The Panthers will take on No. 9 Fort Madison next Friday, July 16th in Fort Madison.

Fort Madison has swept the season series, winning 15-0, 14-4, 16-6 and 8-2.

The winner will get either third-seeded Central DeWitt or sixth-seeded Fairfield on Monday, July 19th.
