Yesterday’s baseball and softball regional slate, well, was entirely wiped out as storms rolled through much of southeast Iowa last night. For Mount Pleasant it didn’t change much, as the Panthers have off until Monday.

Former Hawkeye LB Finds New Home at Baylor:

The son of former Iowa Football strength coach Chris Doyle has found his new football playing home.

Yesterday it was reported that linebacker Dillon Doyle will be transferring to Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Doyle announced his transfer just days before the university and his father reached a “separation agreement” after allegations of racial disparities in the football program were unearthed.

Doyle, who played in 13 games this past year with 23 tackles and a forced fumble, will have to sit out the 2020 season and have two seasons of eligibility.

PGA Tour Sees First Positive COVID Case:

And in national sports, after going through their first tournament back unscathed health-wise, yesterday the PGA announced their first golfer who has tested positive for COVID-19.

PGA Tour member Nick Watney withdrew from the RBC Heritage Classic prior to the second round after testing positive for COVID-19.

On Friday, prior to arriving at the tournament, the PGA said Watney indicated he had symptoms consistent with the illness and after consulting with a tour physician, was administered a test and found to be positive.

A total of 369 individuals (players, caddies, essential personnel) underwent on-site testing prior to the start of the tournament, with zero positive results outside of his.

Demons Punish Panther Softball, Sweep Pair of Games:

The Mount Pleasant Panther softball team took an early 3-0 lead in game one, but from that point were outscored 20-2 as Washington swept a pair of games 8-5 and 12-0 yesterday evening at Washington High School.

The Demons rallied in game one for two runs in each of the 3rd and 4th inning, one in the 5th and three in the 6th to earn their first victory of the season.

Sydni Coleman took the loss in the circle for the Panthers, her first of the season.

Coleman, 8th grader Emma Starr, and Lexi Magnani all had two hit efforts for the Panthers in game one, despite the loss.

In game two, it was all Washington — the Demons pounded out 13 hits in 2.2 innings, winning 12-0.

Washington jumped on Panther starter Hannah Newman, gathering four hits and five runs in the first. They added one more in the 2nd and then swarmed for six runs in a truncated 3rd inning to complete the mercy rule victory.

Newman and Starr both drew walks offensively for the Panthers, who are now 1-3.

The Demons improved to 2-3.

Other regional action last night:

  • New London 6, Central Lee 1
    • Elly Manning scattered seven hits allowing just one run as the New London Tiger softball improved to 3-1 with a 6-1 win over Central Lee last night. Sofie Reighard, Elly Manning, Layney Loyd and Alexa Wenger each had multi-hit performances. Loyd and senior Kara Krieger each drove in two runs for the Tigers.
  • Winfield-Mount Union 2, Pekin 0
    • Madi Anderson is really good. The Winfield junior pitcher tossed another complete game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out 15 as Winfield earned a 2-0 win over Pekin, last night. Jobey Malone had two hits for the Wolves, who are now 3-1 this season.
  • Danville 13, Holy Trinity 12
    • The Danville Bears got their first win under first year head coach and former Iowa Wesleyan standout Allie Massner in a 13-12 slobber-knocker over Holy Trinity. Carlea Beckman stole home on a pass ball with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to earn the Danville victory. Ava Smith picked up the win for Danville who are now 1-3.

Nik Coble took the loss in game one, going 4.2 innings allowing one earned run without allowing a hit.

The kicker for Coble was the six walks he issued. He also struck out six.

Corbin Broeker pitched the final 1.1 innings striking out two in otherwise scoreless relief work.

The Panther offense was stifled by Demon pitching in game one, however Rylan Seberg and Jaxon Hoyle each had hits despite the losing effort.

In game two, Mount Pleasant got everything going.

Nik Coble brought the thunder going 2-for-4 with a home run and a double while driving in six runs.

Jack Johnson and Corbin Broeker each had two hit games, as well.

Hot Starts: Winfield’s Anderson, New London’s Catala Blaze Out of Gates

By: Nathan Bloechl — sports@kilj.com

KILJ — The 2020 Iowa High School baseball and softball season is just a few days old but several KILJ-area athletes have put on a show already.

Let’s take a look at some hot starts to the 2020 season.

Softball

  • Winfield-Mount Union junior pitcher Madie Anderson
    • Anderson was one of the area’s best hurlers last year as a sophomore, registering 17 wins along with a microscopic 1.84 ERA. She’s been even better to start her junior season. Anderson has worked in all three games for the Wolves this season yielding just one run to Class 3A’s 2019 State Runner-Up (now #2 2A) Louisa-Muscatine. Anderson went toe-to-toe with area’s best arm in Hailey Sanders that night — Sanders a UNI recruit — while striking out nine. In 17 innings thus far, Anderson has allowed just five hits, three walks while amassing 26 strikeouts. That’s good.
  • Wapello junior Toni Bohlen
    • Bohlen hit .280 and drove in 17 runs last year as a sophomore and is on pace to shatter those marks this season. The junior is 6-for-11 to start her season and has already accounted for six runs batted in, tops in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference-North Division. If the Arrows want to get back to the state tournament, they’ll need Bohlen to keep up the exploits with the bat this season.
  • New London senior Layney Loyd
    • We all know by now how dangerous Loyd is at the plate — and in the case you forgot — the senior has demolished pitching in three games this season. Hitting .500, Loyd has two doubles, one home run and has plated six runs. The DMACC recruit has helped guide New London to a 2-1 start this season.
  • Danville junior Morgan Waste
    • Talk about a perfect start? Waste has yet to be retired in two games for Danville. A perfect 1.000 batting average, 1.000 on-base percentage and she already has slugged a home run. That is about as hot as you could be to start the year.

Baseball:

  • New London sophomore Josh Catala
    • Really you could pick any New London baseballer here — the Tigers have been ferocious out of the gates — but Catala has been outstanding. The sophomore is hitting .500 with five runs batted in and he’s scored four runs while walking twice. He’s also a perfect 2-for-2 stealing bases atop the Tiger lineup. He’s in for a big season.
  • Danville junior Grifen Molle
    • You may remember Molle from the 2020 State Wrestling Tournament, but here Molle has been pinning fools on the baseball diamond. Molle is hitting .857 through two games. EIGHT-FIFTY-SEVEN. That’s 6-for his first-7, to go along with two doubles and a run batted in. He’s also scored a team best three runs while swiping three bags. It doesn’t matter what sport for Molle, he just continues making things happen.
  • Mediapolis junior Tyler Samuel
    • Samuel got the ball on opening night for Rick Whitaker’s group and twirled an absolute gem, working 6.2 innings allowing just one hit, two walks while punching out nine in a 10-2 Bulldog win. That’s the kind of dominant performance you expect from your ace — and Mepo got it.
  • Mount Pleasant senior Clayton Lowery
    • Lowery, a Grandview commit, got his senior season off on a bang on Monday night, helping guide Mount Pleasant to an 8-5 victory over Fort Madison. Lowery drove in three runs while smacking a ringing triple in his first at-bat of 2020. In total, Lowery finished with three hits on the night, while flashing the leather multiple times defensively, proving he’s one of Southeast Iowa’s most feared two-way players.

New London Baseball Steamrolls to 3-0 Start:

Jax Boyer had three hits in four at-bats and drove in four runs as the New London Tiger baseball team drubbed Winfield-Mount Union 24-0.

The Tigers struck for seven runs to begin the game and then added an eight spot in the 3rd inning and put up nine runs in the 4th.

Shae Summerfield and Jax Boyer split the pitching duties.

New London is now 3-0 on the season, they’ll battle Central Lee tonight at home, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Other regional baseball action last night saw:

  • Mediapolis 19, Keokuk 18
    • In one of the longer games of the entire season, Mediapolis rallied from down nine in the 6th inning to come back to defeat Keokuk 19-18. The Bulldogs are now 3-0 on the year. They’ll take on Columbus tonight at home, first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Anderson Deals Another Gem, Leads Winfield Over New London:

Winfield-Mount Union junior Madie Anderson threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine as the Wolves took care of New London 3-0, last night.

It’s the third consecutive dynamite start for Anderson who has allowed just one run all season, coming against #2 (2A) Louisa-Muscatine on opening night.

8th grade pitcher Sophie Malott allowed three runs, only one earned, combined in the first two innings but settled down after that.

Malott walked three and struck out one.

Emma Haines and Anna Anderson each had two hits for Winfield-Mount Union, Ashlyn McSorely had the lone knock for New London.

Winfield, now 2-1, will take on Pekin at home tonight, while New London will travel to Central Lee for a date with the Hawks.

Other regional softball action last night:

  • Lone Tree 13, Danville 3
    • Danville gave up six runs in the bottom of the first as Lone Tree improved to 2-1. Carlea Beckman had two hits for Danville including a home run and two runs batted in. Danville will host Holy Trinity tonight.
  • Keokuk 8, Mediapolis 7
    • Sophomore shortstop Jayde Eberhardt had three hits and scored run but it was not enough as Keokuk nipped Mediapolis 8-7 in a non-conference tilt last night. Mediapolis is now 0-3 on the season.
  • Fort Madison 15, Wapello 13
    • Wapello rallied for four runs in the bottom of the 7th, but Fort Madison held on for a wild 15-13 non-conference victory. 8th grade third-baseman Lexi Whaley had four hits for Fort Madison including a home run while driving in three in the win for the Hounds.

Mount Pleasant Back in Action Tonight:

The Mount Pleasant baseball and softball teams are both back in action tonight when they travel to take on Washington.

Both Panther baseball and softball split their opening night double header against Fort Madison and will begin tonight with game one at 5:30 p.m.
