Ripon (Wis.) — Former Mount Pleasant standout Jordan Magnani delivered 15 points and six assists while playing all 50 minutes of Saturday’s MWC Conference Championship as Cornell survived Ripon 82-79.
It was the program’s first MWC Tournament title since 1994 and the Rams received automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Magnani has enjoyed a dream like senior season, eclipsing 1,000 points, earning First Team All-MWC honors and now a NCAA Tournament berth.
Women’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Claims CAC Crown
Tournament host and top-seeded Iowa Wesleyan University earned a decisive 84-59 victory against No. 2 seed Haskell Indian Nations University (Kansas) Sunday to win the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament championship.
The Tigers took control of the game early, jumping out to a 22-9 first-quarter lead. They followed with 21-point efforts in the second and third quarters to take a commanding 64-44 lead into the final 10-minute period.
The hosts followed with another consistent quarter by scoring 20 points to close out the impressive tournament performance.
Iowa Wesleyan made 49% of their field goals in the contest and connected on 10 3-point field goals.
All five of the team’s starters were double-figure scorers, led by Brittany West’s 24 points. Kyla Moore drained five 3-pointers to add 19 points. Breanna Wendland piled on 16 points while Maci Kuchta and Brielle Baker chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Haskell Indian Nations shot 44.4% but were outrebounded by a 34-22 margin in the contest. Mahpiya Irving came off the bench to score 11 points to lead the team. Tiana Guillory and Marylin Goodman each contributed nine points.
Iowa Wesleyan and Haskell Indian Nations will both represent the CAC as automatic qualifiers to the NAIA national tournament.
Men’s College Basketball: Florida College Rips CAC Tournament
Florida College scored 51 points in each half and received 32 points from Matt Simpson to capture the 2022 Continental Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament championship Sunday with a 102-82 victory against Washington Adventist University (Maryland) at Iowa Wesleyan University.
The Falcons, the tournament’s top seed, scored over 100 points in two of their three tournament games.
Iowa Wesleyan was the only score to hold them to double digits.
A 3-point field goal from Washington Adventist’s Mastadi Pitt cut the deficit to 31-25 at the 7:14 mark of the first half.
Pitt registered a game-high 33 points to lead the Shock’s strong effort.
Florida College led 51-37 at halftime and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half. A four-point play from Simpson gave the Falcons a 65-44 lead five minutes into the second half.
Devon Flowers scored 12 points for the Shock while Kyron Martin added 11 points off the bench.
Florida College and Washington Adventist will both represent the CAC as automatic qualifiers to the NAIA national tournament.
Prep Basketball: Danville Wins Instant Classic in 3OT Lifting Bears Back to State
In the third meeting between the two schools, did we really expect anything to be different?
Danville and WACO played two nip and tuck games already this year and Saturday was no different.
Withstanding blow after blow, both teams slugged it out like heavyweight boxers — in the end however it was the late game heroics of Cadence Williams, Ty Carr and Sawyer Nelson guiding Danville to a 46-39 triple overtime win over WACO.
Williams’ broke out of a shooting slump that spanned a month the senior missing every three he took since January 25th.
That changed just seconds into the third overtime which would give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish.
The win moved Danville to the state tournament for the first time in six years where, as the fifth seed, they’ll play No. 4 Lake Mills on March 7th at 10:30 a.m.
Williams finished with five points, but it was the monster play of senior Sawyer Nelson that Danville needed.
Nelson finished with 20 points and 20 boards to lead the Bears, while Ty Carr added 11.
WACO was paced by sophomore wing Hunter Hughes and his 11 points. Simeon Reichenbach had nine while Mason Miller chipped in with eight.
Danville is now 23-2.
WACO ends their terrific season 20-5.
Men’s College Basketball: Magnani Guides Cornell to NCAAs

College Baseball:
Iowa Wesleyan split their weekend four-pack of games with Southwestern College.
After dropping the twinbill Saturday, the Tigers came back to sweep Sunday’s games with 10-3 and 18-10 wins.
Wesleyan improved to 3-13.
They’ll take on Hannibal-LaGrange this weekend in a doubleheader.

Fairfield — It will be a blockbuster night in Fairfield tonight when WACO and Danville meet up for the third time this season.
This time, a trip to the state tournament is on the line.
Danville is 22-2 on the year, while WACO — fresh off of an upset over New London — is 20-4.
Both of Danville’s wins over WACO this year have been nail biters.
On February 1st, it was a 39-37 Bears win, while also nabbing a 43-38 triumph on January 17th.
Danville is paced by senior combo guard Drake Johnson and his 14.3 points per game. Sawyer Nelson is averaging 10 points and Super Conference-high 9.5 rebounds.
WACO sophomore Hunter Hughes leads the Warriors with 11.9 points per game while Reece Oswald adds 8.5.

The evening session featured the top two seeds racing out to big leads. Haskell Indian Nations University (Kansas) defeated No. 7 Cottey College (Missouri) 67-33 before No. 1 Iowa Wesleyan earned an 81-53 victory against No. 8 Fisher College (Massachusetts).
Saturday’s semifinal games will feature Haskell Indian Nations playing Crowley’s Ridge at 4 p.m. before Iowa Wesleyan faces Washington Adventist at 8:30 p.m.

Senior forward Dewon Trent led the Panthers with 14 points and four rebounds, while Payton Hagans, Owen Vansickel and Aaiden Ashton all added seven.
Mount Pleasant closes their year 9-14 and will return several including the aforementioned Hagans, Vansickel and Ashton as well as rising sophomore big man Nate Stroud.

Women’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Rolls, CAC Women’s Semis Ready
Mount Pleasant — Iowa Wesleyan steamrolled Fisher College 81-53 as Steve Williamson’s top-seeded Tigers advanced to today’s semifinal round.
Wesleyan will battle with fourth-seeded Washington Adventist who got by Northern New Mexico 62-52.
The bottom of the bracket saw Crowley’s Ridge College upset Wilberforce and second-seeded Haskell Indian Nation’s earn a 67-33 win over Cottey.
Wesleyan will play tonight at 8:00 p.m.
John Kuhens will have the call on FM 98.5 and AM 1130.
The championship game will be played Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant, Top-Seeded Marion Meet
The Mount Pleasant boys’ basketball team will finally play tonight when they get top-seeded Marion for their Class 3A-Substate 5 semifinal.
The two teams were scheduled to play last night, but deteriorating road conditions cancelled the game.
They’ll now meet at Center Point-Urbana and tip at 7:00 p.m.
It’s a coup for the Panthers who now get an extra day of rest after coming off a 60-55 double overtime win over Mount Vernon.
Marion is 17-5 on the year and are the top-seed in the substate.
The Wolves, 3-2 in their last five, took down Keokuk in their opener on Monday night.
They’re led by junior guard Brayson Laube, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, while hitting 51% of his field goals and 44% of his triples.
He’s the only player in double figures for Marion.
Mount Pleasant guard Payton Hagans was dynamite in Monday’s quarterfinal win.
The tantalizing sophomore poured in a season-high 26 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three to guide the Panthers back to the substate semifinal for the second straight season.
They’ll need him to be at his best tonight for the Panthers to pull off a second-straight upset.
Tonight’s game will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Postseason play tips off today with No. 4-seeded Wilberforce University (Ohio) facing No. 5 Iowa Wesleyan, starting at 8:00 a.m.
The morning session also will feature top-seeded Florida College facing No. 8 Lincoln Christian University (Illinois) at 11:30 a.m.

Iowa Wesleyan (11-18) has a 5-5 home record in its first CAC season.
Joey Brown tops on the team at 15 points per contest after making 50.4% of his shots, while Carver Locke also averaging 10.7 points a game.
The tournament hosts have held opposing teams to 34% from behind the 3-point arc this season.
Men’s College Basketball: Former Mount Pleasant Standout Magnani
Former Mount Pleasant standout Jordan Magnani has been named All-Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball First Team, the league announced.
Magnani has been the floor general for the Rams, averaging 16.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and leading the team with 3.8 assists and 1.0 steals per contest. The fourth-year starter made 99 free throws, converting at an 81.1 percent clip, and also hit 34 3-pointers.
In 16 MWC games, Magnani ranked third in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assist-turnover ratio. He finished fourth in scoring and assists MWC play.
Magnani has scored in double figures in 20 of his last 22 games.
Cornell is the No. 2 seed in the MWC Tournament and plays Grinnell in Friday’s semifinal at 1:30 p.m. in Ripon, Wisconsin.
Prep Wrestling: Marcel Lopez Named 1A Dan Gable Mr. Wrestler
New London’s four-time state champion Marcel Lopez has been named the Dan Gable 1A Mr. Wrestler of the Year.
The awards were presented yesterday.
Lopez defeated Riverside, Oakland’s Jace Rose by decision 5-3 in Saturday’s 126-pound state final.
He was Iowa’s 30th four time state champion.
He will be wrestling collegiately for SIU-Edwardsville.
