High School Track

WACO will host the Ekstrand Relays tonight with Danville, Fairfield, Mediapolis, New London, Winfield-Mt. Union, and the Central Lee boys’ team all participating.

The Wapello girls’ team will host the Arrow Relays tonight for their senior night with Central Lee making the trip.

Mt. Pleasant and Van Buren County will make the trip to Cardinal to compete in the Bob Gerard Relays tomorrow, May 2nd.

High School Soccer

The WACO boys’ team’s offense could not keep up with Washington last night, losing 5-3. The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, May 6th, against Sigourney Keota at 5 pm on the road.

Fairfield will face off against Fort Madison with the girls on the road and the boys at home tonight at 5 pm.

The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team will make the trip to Highland tonight at 5 pm, while the girls’ team will play at Muscatine at 6:45 pm.

Mt. Pleasant will square off against Washington tonight with the girls’ team at home and the boys on the road.

Mediapolis will take on Central Lee tomorrow, May 2nd, at home with the girls playing first at 5 pm and the boys game to follow at 7 pm.

Wapello will celebrate their senior night tomorrow with the girls’ team competing against Cedar Valley Christian at 5 pm and the boys’ team taking on Danville at 7 pm.

Southeastern Community College                                                     

The softball team had their season snuffed out by Iowa Western Community College as the Blackhawks were swept in the Region 11 semifinals. Navy Clark pitched a fine first game, going six innings and allowing only two runs on five hits but the offense left five runners on base as Lauren Summers produced the lone RBI on a solo home run in the 2-1 loss. 

Game two saw SCC take a 5 to 4 lead in the top of the fifth inning before Iowa Western scored six unanswered runs to advance to the championship game against Indian Hills Community College in a 10-5 final. Jeliane Stewart added another home run, bringing her season total to 18. The Blackhawks finished the season with a 29-14 record.

The baseball team will square off against Indian Hills Community College for a three-game series on the road tomorrow, May 2nd, to conclude the regular season.

Prep Track and Field: The Columbus Boys’ Team Captures Another Win and More from Sigourney’s Tuesday Meet

Sigourney, IA- Four of our local schools ventured to Sigourney last night to compete in a Co-Ed track meet and the HLV girls’ team finished on top of the standings with 123 points, while the Columbus boys’ team won their sixth meet of the year, edging past Pekin by four points with 109.

Girls Competition

Van Buren County was next on the leaderboard with 103 points as the Warriors won four events. The team displayed their speed with victories in the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays, winning the events by a second and two seconds, respectively.

Rylee Phillips earned an individual win in the 1500-meter run, posting a time of 5 minutes and 20 seconds. The Warriors added one more victory in the relays with a time of 1 minute and 59 seconds in the sprint medley relay.

Kayley Snowgren provided eight points with a 2nd place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 33 seconds.

WACO managed to finish in 5th place with 61 points as Bren Graber collected their lone victory of the meet with a time of 17.2 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. Taelyn Egli finished in 2nd place for the long jump as did Josie Dykstra for the 400-meter hurdles. The Warriors’ shuttle hurdle and 4×100 meter relay squads also took the silver.

The 4×200 meter relay team for Columbus anchored the squad with a 2nd place time of 1 minute and 56 seconds. Isabella Forbes took home a silver in the shot put with a heave of 33 feet and 11 inches, which helped the Wildcats take 7th place with 43 points.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s freshman sensation took home another gold in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet and 7 inches. The Wolves snatched 2nd place in the sprint medley relay with a time of 2 minutes. Winfield-Mt. Union collected 28 points for 9th place.

Boys Competition

Columbus was able to outduel Pekin behind their first-place performances in five events.

Riley Kaalberg won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.33 seconds. Lamar Ceant sprinted to wins in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.5 seconds and the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.03 seconds.

The Wildcats won the 4×200 meter relay with a time of 1 minute and 31 seconds and the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1 minute and 1 seconds.

Van Buren County, Winfield-Mt. Union, and WACO finished bundled in the middle of the pack, respectively, with Van Buren County leading the way with 52 points and a 5th place finish.

Van Buren County combined to win the 4×400 meter relay with a mark of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Jace Duncan took the silver in the 400-meter hurdles and Lincoln Bainbridge grabbed 2nd place in the 200-meter dash.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s lone win came in the shot put as Cooper Buffington heaved the shot 47 feet and 7 inches, a full four feet further than 2nd place. The Wolves had a litany of 2nd place finishes with the distance medley, the sprint medley, and Kohlby Newsom in the 1600-meter run.

WACO picked up the win the in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 45.08 seconds.

High School Track

New London hosted the Co-Ed Chris Selby Invitational last night and Mediapolis swept the team crowns with the boys’ team taking 151 points and the girls’ team collecting 155 points.

On the boys’ side for the Bulldogs, Nathan Schmidgall won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.64 seconds. Mason Lindeen outpaced the field in the 1600-meter run by two-tenths of a second. Lathan Keller snuck away with the victory in the high jump with a height of 6 feet and 3 inches. The Mediapolis squad raced to wins in the 4×800 and the sprint medley relays.

New London finished in 2nd place with 122 points followed by Danville with 82 points. The Tigers had Gavin Strawhacker take the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.56 seconds. New London won the 4×100, 4×200, and the distance medley relays. In the field events, London Franklin leapt 21 feet and 9.5 inches to take the long jump.

Danville’s Nick Powell scored the win in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes and 4 seconds. The Bears grabbed the victory in the 4×400 meter relay.

West Burlington/Notre Dame was led by Landry Haberichter’s 1st place time of 10.97 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Logan Hamma flew his way to a win in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 57.95 seconds, which helped catapult the Falcons to the victory in the shuttle hurdle relay. 

Wapello’s Kolton Small claimed the victories in the throwing events with a heave of 47 feet and 5 inches in the shot and a toss of 138 feet and 3 inches in the discus.

On the girls’ side for Mediapolis, Amelia Pfeiff took the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.76 seconds. Annabelle Hedges captured the win in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet and 2 inches, while Madden Thie took the high jump with a leap of 5 feet. Lastly, Payton Harris won the discus with a throw of 99 feet and 7 inches. 

Danville, who finished in 3rd place, had Alaina Gourley win the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.02 seconds. The Bears sprinted to the win in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, and sprint medley relays.

Wapello’s Kate Lanz grabbed the win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.2 seconds. West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Kaitlyn Kipp took home the gold in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11 minutes and 41 seconds. The Falcons won the distance medley relay with a time of 4 minutes and 38 seconds and the shuttle hurdle relay.

Mt. Pleasant and Central Lee competed in the Keokuk Relays last night and the Panther girls’ team walked away with the team title, collecting 156 points, while the Fort Madison boys’ team out legged Keokuk with 126 points to the Chiefs’ 122 points.

Starting with the Mt. Pleasant girls’ team, Alexis Wagner won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The 4×100 meter relay team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Taylor Williamson, and Kiyah Sanders grabbed the gold with a time of 50.68 seconds. Sanders joined Ellie Freeman, Izzy Sloat, and Linzy Striegel in the 4×200 meter relay as the team won with a time of 1 minute and 48 seconds. The Panthers also finished in 2nd place in ten different events.

Central Lee’s best finisher was Allison Gruntmeir in the girls’ high jump as her leap of 4 feet and 10 inches earned her 3rd place. Aubrey Weber took 3rd place in the discus as well with a toss of 105 feet and 1 inch.

On the boys’ side, Mt. Pleasant tied Burlington for 3rd place with 83 points. The Panthers took 2nd in both throwing events with Jaymisen Rich’s toss of 42 feet and 8 inches in the shot put and Mason Frueh’s throw of 124 feet and 7.5 inches in the discus. Mt. Pleasant also finished in 2nd place in the shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays as Silas Hulett claimed the silver in the 3200-meter run.

Central Lee’s Kegan Damico won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.24 seconds as the Hawks collected the 6th most points at 43 for the meet.

WACO will host the Ekstrand Relays tomorrow, May 1st, with Danville, Fairfield, Central Lee, Mediapolis, New London, and Winfield-Mt. Union all participating.

High School Tennis

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team handed Fort Madison their second loss in as many days, this time on the road in a 7-2 final. Bethany Drury, Audrey Richmond (in a shutout), Hali Crane, Lila Cook, and Hannah Villaplaza (in a tiebreaker) all won their singles matches. The teams of Crane and Zoey Carlsen and Cook and Villaplaza escaped with victories in their doubles showdowns.

Mt. Pleasant will square off against Fairfield tomorrow, May 1st, with the girls on the road and the boys at home.

The Fairfield boys’ team doubled up wins against Burlington with a 7-2 final last night.

High School Golf

The Columbus girls’ team defeated Louisa-Muscatine yesterday 208-220 as Hailey Wellington shot a 49 to lead the Wildcats. Columbus will face off against Highland tomorrow, May 1st, at home.

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team snuck past Mediapolis yesterday 215-225, despite Katelyn Wischmeier carding a 51. The boys’ match featured a rare tie, 161-161. Kohen Stotlar had a phenomenal round of golf, ending the nine-holes with a 34 for the Bulldogs. 

Mediapolis will host Van Buren County tomorrow. 

New London will square off against Burlington Notre Dame at home today.

Holy Trinity Catholic swept WACO yesterday via forfeit. The Crusader boys’ team shot a 191 with Brock Sheetz turning in a 46, while WACO’s Malachi Rinner tied for the 3rd best score of the course with a 48. For the girls’ match, Emma Mohrfeld shot a 49 for the Crusaders to lead the course as Morgan Meyer carded a 57 to pace the Warriors.

The Wapello girls’ team will compete against WACO tomorrow on the road.

Danville will travel to Flint Hills Golf Course tomorrow to face off against Holy Trinity Catholic. 

The Winfield-Mt. Union and Wapello boys’ team competed in the West Liberty Tournament yesterday and Justin Knipfer’s 18-hole score of 83, which tied for 14th best, led the Wolves to a 6th place score of 346. Wapello finished in 9th place with a team score of 363.

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to Lone Tree tomorrow.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team finished in 12th place at the Oskaloosa Invite yesterday with Fairfield following immediately behind with a team score of 353. Archer Kreuter led the Trojans with an 18-hole score of 84, which ranked 25th amongst the field.

The Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield boys’ teams will compete in the Washington Invitational on May 5th at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will host a tournament on Friday, May 2nd.

The Central Lee girls’ team will compete in the Keokuk Invite on May 5th. 

High School Soccer

The Mediapolis girls’ team had their three-game winning streak snapped last night by Fort Madison in a 4-1 final. Mediapolis will take on Central Lee on Friday, May 2nd, at home with the girls playing first at 5 pm and the boys game to follow at 7 pm.

The Central Lee girls’ team fell to Albia 6-2 last night. 

The Danville boys’ team’s comeback attempt ended just short of its mark as Fairfield exited with the 3-2 victory. Binh Truong had two goals for the Trojans in the winning effort. Fairfield will face off against Fort Madison with the girls on the road and the boys at home tomorrow, May 1st, at 5 pm.

The Wapello boys’ team struggled against Hillcrest Academy last night losing 10-0, while the girls’ team fell to Monmouth-Roseville 4-0. Wapello will celebrate their senior night on Friday with the girls’ team competing against Cedar Valley Christian at 5 pm and the boys’ team taking on Danville at 7 pm.

The WACO boys’ team will host Washington tonight at 4:30 pm.

New London will host the Co-Ed Chris Selby Invitational tonight with Danville, West Burlington/Notre Dame, Mediapolis, and Wapello making the trip.

High School Tennis

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team celebrated their senior night with a dominant 8-1 win over Fort Madison last night. Seniors Bethany Drury and Aurdrey Richmond shutout their singles opponents, while seniors Hali Crane and Hannah Villaplaza also collected wins in their singles match. The Panthers also swept the doubles matches. The Panthers will have a rematch against the Bloodhounds tonight on the road. 

The boys’ team followed suit with a sweep of Fort Madison. Max Heater, Lou Schimmelpfennig, Elijah Rynders, and the team of Dane Cook and Heater did not allow their opponents to win a game in the impressive performance. The Panthers will travel to Davis County tonight.

The Fairfield boys’ team defeated Burlington 8-1 last night. The Fairfield boys’ team will hit the road tonight for a rematch against Burlington.

High School Golf

Winfield-Mt. Union swept Hillcrest Academy last night with the boys’ team winning 168-180, while the girls’ team won via forfeit. Justin Knipfer led the boys’ team, shooting a 40 (+4) through nine holes as Ashlyn Bender and Ella Kann each carded a 54 for the girls’ team. 

The Winfield-Mt. Union and Wapello boys’ teams will participate in the West Liberty tournament today.

The Holy Trinity Catholic boys’ team defeated New London last night 186-213, while the New London girls’ team avenged their loss with a 208-233 win over the Crusaders. For Holy Trinity Catholic, Luke Hellige and Brock Sheetz each finished with a 45, while Elizabeth Griffin led the girls’ team with a 51. 

Holy Trinity Catholic will make the trip to WACO today.

New London will square off against Burlington Notre Dame at home tomorrow, April 30th.

The SEC boys’ teams met up at Washington to close out the regular season meets amongst the conference and Washington claimed the top spot as a team, shooting 161, and individually as Drew Conrad carded a 35. Fairfield finished a close 2nd place with a team score of 169 as Xavier Kessel took home a 39. Mt. Pleasant and Fort Madison tied for 3rd place with a team score of 176.

The Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield boys’ teams will participate in the Oskaloosa Invite today.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will host a tournament on Friday, May 2nd.

Wapello walked away with a pair of victories against Columbus yesterday with the boys’ team coming out on top 201-242 and the girls’ team winning 216-229. Barrett Garrison led the boys’ team with a nine-hole score of 46, while the girls’ team had Emma Gerhardt card a 50.

The Wapello girls’ team will compete against WACO on Thursday on the road.

Columbus will take on Louisa-Muscatine at home today.

Danville split their matchup against Central Lee last night with the boys’ team losing 188-148 and the girls’ team narrowly winning 235-246. In the boys’ meet, the Hawks claimed the top four spots with Carson Morrison claiming a nine-hole score of 35, while Alex Holtkamp carded a 42 for the Bears. In the girls’ meet, Eastin Chipman led the field for Danville with a 52, as Marie Young took home a 57 for the Hawks. 

Danville will travel to Flint Hills Golf Course on Thursday to face off against Holy Trinity Catholic. 

The Central Lee girls’ team will compete in the Keokuk Invite on May 5th. 

Mediapolis will face off against Burlington Notre Dame today on the road. 

High School Soccer

Burlington Notre Dame swept Columbus last night as the boys’ team clobbered the Wildcats 9-1 and the girls’ team won 1-0. Daisy Hazell had the lone goal in the girls contest as Reese Richardson notched 12 saves.

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will play their make-up game against Quincy Notre Dame tonight at home at 5:30 pm. The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team will make the trip to Highland on Thursday, May 1st, at 5 pm.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team was able to avoid their first conference loss of the season when Dylan White scored a goal with two minutes left in the game to tie Fairfield 1-1. The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team snapped their three-game losing streak last night, sneaking past Fairfield 2-1. 

Mt. Pleasant will square off against Washington on Thursday with the girls’ team at home and the boys on the road.

The Fairfield girls’ team will face off against Fort Madison on the road on Thursday at 5 pm.

The Mediapolis boys’ team handed WACO a 4-0 loss last night. The Bulldogs will take on Central Lee on Friday, May 2nd, at 7 pm at home.

High School Soccer Rankings

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released their second round of rankings for boys’ soccer and Burlington Notre Dame remained at the #4 slot after going 2-0 last week, including knocking off previously unbeaten Central Lee 5-0. The Nikes are averaging four goals per game, while Taylor Lundgren is saving 83.7% shots on goal.

Southeastern Community College Soars to #4 in Latest NJCAA Baseball Rankings

West Burlington, IA- The Southeastern Community College (SCC) baseball team has clawed their way back inside the top 5 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II top 25 rankings at #4 after going 5-1 this past week.

The week started rough after a 7-0 shutout loss to Black Hawk College, but the Blackhawks had the opportunity to rough up some conference opponents and did just that with sweeps of Des Moines Area Community College and Southwestern Community College.

The offense was nearly unstoppable, putting up double-digit runs in four of the five wins and cracking nine home runs by the week’s end. Their pitching also exhibited the ability to come up in clutch moments, shutting out the Bears in the final two innings of a thrilling 13-10 win and Owen Thomson’s two strikeouts ended the Spartans hope of extending extra innings.

Jackson Petsche was on a tear at the plate this week, tabbing 11 RBIs on eight hits including three home runs.

The Blackhawks sit at 40-10 for the season and first in the ICCAC with a 24-3 record against conference opponents. Five of their last six games will be conference showdowns with the last three on the road against Indian Hills Community College, who is 18-10 versus the ICCAC.

High School Track

Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Columbus, and Van Buren County will participate in the Sigourney Co-Ed meet tomorrow, April 29th.

The 115th Drake Relays concluded over the weekend and here’s how our local teams performed in the 4×100 meter relays.

For the girls’ race, Mt. Pleasant was the first of our local teams to finish as the team of Kynlee White, Ellie Freeman, Taylor Williamson, and Kiyah Sanders crossed the finish line in 49th place with a time of 50.77 seconds. Burlington took 88th and Keokuk finished in 94th place, while Washington was disqualified. 

On the boys’ side, New London’s squad of Cale Westerbeck, Gavin Strawhacker, Brigham Porter, and London Franklin sprinted to a 25th place time of 43.48 seconds. Keokuk finished in 30th place followed by Burlington in 39th place. Columbus had their team grab 42nd place with a time of 43.84 seconds. Fairfield and Washington finished stride-for-stride with the Trojans taking 62nd place and the Demons in 63rd place. Mediapolis collected 87th place.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will celebrate their senior night tonight against Fort Madison, while the boys’ team will travel to face off against the Bloodhounds. 

The Fairfield girls’ team will get a rematch with Burlington, their closest win of the season tonight in a road showdown. The boys’ team will play at home.

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team fell to Wahlert Catholic at the Assumption Invitational over the weekend 3-0. The Nikes will host Columbus tonight with the girls’ teams playing first at 5 pm followed by the boys game.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team made the trip to Muscatine over the weekend and split their triangular, losing 2-1 to the hosts and handling Central DeWitt 3-0. Akbar Wilson scored two goals, Dylan White recorded three assists, and Xachary LeBlanc made 13 saves between the two contests. 

Fairfield will tangle with Mt. Pleasant tonight with the boys on the road and the girls at home.

The Mediapolis boys’ team will travel to WACO tonight at 5 pm.

The Mediapolis girls’ team will face off against Fort Madison on the road tomorrow, April 29th, at 5 pm.

The Danville boys’ team will travel to Fairfield tomorrow at 5 pm.

The Central Lee girls’ team will make the trip to Albia tomorrow with gametime at 5 pm.

The Wapello boys’ team will play Hillcrest Academy on the road at 6:30 pm tomorrow and the girls’ team will take on Monmouth-Roseville at home at 5 pm.

Southeastern Community College                                                     

The baseball team swept Southwestern Community College over the weekend both in thrilling and dominating fashions. Game one saw the Blackhawks score four runs in the top of the 7th to take a 5 to 3 lead just for the Spartans to knot the game in the bottom half of the inning. Nevertheless, SCC would win the game in the 8th inning, 6-5, as Owen Thomson slammed the door, striking out two in his 5th win of the season.

Games two and three were an exhibition of offense as the Blackhawks won game two 11-1 as Michael Farina and Jackson Petsche each notched two RBIs, while SCC clobbered the Spartans in game three 15-4. Farina homered twice in the game tallying nine RBIs for the weekend, while Sheppard Graf also went deep in the contest and brought home four runs.

The baseball team will travel to Northeast Community College today. 

The softball team starts their Region 11 tournament as the #3-seed on Wednesday, April 30th, in a best-of-three series against Iowa Western with the winner advancing to the championship game.

High School Track

Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Columbus, and Van Buren County will participate in the Sigourney Co-Ed meet on Tuesday, April 29th. 

New London will host the Co-Ed Chris Selby Invitational on Tuesday with Danville, West Burlington/Notre Dame, Mediapolis, and Wapello making the trip.

Mt. Pleasant and Central Lee will compete in the Keokuk Relays on Tuesday.

The 115th Drake Relays will conclude today with multiple local 4×100 meter relay teams set to compete today. Here’s a look at what happened yesterday.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom took home 10th place with a time of 1 minute and 55 seconds in the 800-meter run. Kylee Hill of Burlington took 4th place in the shot put with a heave of 43 feet and 6.75 inches. Danville’s Alaina Gourley grabbed 16th place in the 400-meter dash. Lastly, the Mt. Pleasant middle school team of Delaney Anderson, Lindsay Hart, Elodie Rawson, and Avery Fedler finished with the gold in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4 minutes and 12 seconds, eight seconds faster than 2nd place.

High School Tennis

In a battle of the undefeateds, the Mt. Pleasant boys’ team fell to Fairfield last night 8-1. Lou Schimmelpfennig collected the lone win for the Panthers after winning the 10-point tiebreaker. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will celebrate their senior night on Monday, April 28th, against Fort Madison, while the boys’ team will travel to face off against the Bloodhounds. 

The Fairfield girls’ team will get a rematch with Burlington, their closest win of the season, on Monday in a road showdown. The boys’ team will play at home.

High School Golf

New London split with Winfield-Mt. Union in their showdown yesterday with the girls’ team winning 215-222 and the boys falling 202-161. Justin Knipfer and Grant Anderson each carded a 39 for the Wolves, while Izzy Lemley shot a 47 for the Tigers in the boys’ match. Emma Busby took home a 45 for the New London girls’ team, while Ashlyn Bender finished with a 49 for the Wolves. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will tangle with Hillcrest Academy on Monday, April 28th, at home.

Holy Trinity Catholic will host New London on Monday.

WACO will take on Louisa-Muscatine on Monday on the road.

The SEC girls’ team will make the trip to Burlington on Monday, while the SEC boys’ teams will meet up at Washington.

Burlington Notre Dame will travel to compete in a triangular on Monday at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course. 

Wapello will take on Columbus on Monday at home.

Danville will make the trip to Central Lee on Monday to play at the Green Acres Country Club.

High School Soccer

The Mediapolis girls’ team hasn’t allowed a goal in three consecutive games as they defeated Monmouth-Roseville 3-0 last night. The Bulldogs will face off against Fort Madison on the road on Tuesday, April 29th, at 5 pm.

The Danville boys’ team tied Hillcrest Academy last night 1-1. The Bears will travel to Fairfield on Tuesday at 5 pm.

The Central Lee girls’ team fell to Canton last night 6-0. The Central Lee girls’ team will make the trip to Albia on Tuesday with gametime at 5 pm.

The #4 Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team handed Central Lee their first loss of the season last night in a 5-0 final. The Nikes will compete against Highland on Monday, April 28th, at 6 pm.

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will compete in the Assumption Invitational today.

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will participate in a tournament at Muscatine today with game one at 9 am. Head coach Rocco Russo talked about what he hopes to see from his team heading into the second half of conference play,

“Here into the season, we’re going to keep trying to keep our kids healthy. We’re playing a lot of soccer right now. We got a tournament on Saturday. We’re gonna go play 2 good teams this Saturday. So, we’re going to try to be smart with our boys, going to watch some film tomorrow. We’re going to come out here and run around a little bit, go up there on Saturday and try to do some work and then come back Monday and start round two with conference play.”

Prep Track and Field: Wrap-Up of Thursday Night’s Out of Town Track Meets

Prep Track and Field- It was busy Thursday night for high school Track and Field with meets placed all over Iowa. Some of our local teams made the trip to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for the Ike Ryan Relays and another group competed at the Gardner-Wilson Relays at Louisa-Muscatine. Here’s some of the highlights.

Gardner-Wilson Relays

Much like they have all season, the Columbus boys’ team collected points like it was going out of style, finishing with the crown with 189 points, while Van Buren County took 2nd place with 123 points. West Burlington/Notre Dame took 3rd place with 80 points.

Lamar Ceant has been on a tear in his sophomore campaign as be blazed his way to a 1st place time of 22.42 seconds to win the 200-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.8 seconds for Columbus.

Ty Muniz outpaced the field in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes and 46 seconds and the 3200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes and 14 seconds for the Wildcats. In the field events, Riley Kaalberg outjumped everyone in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet and 2.5 inches.

The Falcons watched Landry Haberichter fly to the gold in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.09 seconds followed closely behind by Ceant of Columbus. That speed led to a win in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 44.66 seconds. Logan Hamma won the 400-meter hurdles with a sub-one-minute time.

Mason Watkins hovered to a win in the high jump for WB/ND with a height of 6 feet.

Van Buren County’s Lincoln Bainbridge, a fine distance runner, displayed his endurance speed with a win in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.92 seconds. The Warriors went on to win the 4×200, 4×400, and sprint medley relays.

Wapello’s Kolton Small swept the throwing events, heaving the shot put 49 feet and tossing the discus 135 feet, just one inch further than Hayden Cantrell of Louisa-Muscatine.

On the girls’ side, West Burlington fielded 2nd place with 100 points, followed closely behind by Van Buren County’s 98.5 points and Central Lee took 4th place with 75.5 points.

Ady Lamm led the Falcons with a 1st place time of 13.39 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Kaitlynn Kipp had enough separation to win the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 33 seconds. WB/ND grabbed 1st place in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Van Buren County won the 4×100 meter relay.

Central Lee’s Allsion Gruntmeir was victorious in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.7 seconds, while Kamryn Cox swiped the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 1 minute and 16 seconds. Aubrey Weber easily took the discus with a throw of 109 feet and 3.5 inches.

Columbus took the 4×200 meter relay. Isabella Forbes tossed the shot 33 feet and 4 inches to take home the gold in the shot put.

Ike Ryan Relays

Mediapolis performed well over at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, winning the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 44.2 seconds and the 4×200 meter relay with a time of 1 minute and 32 seconds.

Will Schmidgall took the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 4 seconds. His success parlayed into a victory in the sprint medley relay with a mark of 1 minute and 28 seconds.

Simon Wendel grabbed 1st place in the 1600-meter run by over six seconds with a time of 4 minutes and 45 seconds along with the 3200-meter run with a time over a minute faster than second place (10 minutes and 17 seconds).

In the field events, Nathan Schmidgall took home the long jump with a leap of 20 feet and 7.25 inches, while Lathan Keller tied for 1st place in the high jump with a height of 6 feet.

Fairfield’s lone victory belonged to Spencer McCready in the 110-meter hurdles, lunging out Mt. Pleasant’s Keegan Heaton by five-tenths of a second with a mark of 16.24 seconds.

The Panthers finished with the silver in four events.
