Two Vehicle Collision in Mount Pleasant

Wednesday, Sept. 14, just before 4 pm, the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to the intersection of South Grand Avenue and East Washington Street for a report of a two vehicle accident. Upon investigation, it was determined that a vehicl operated by Kathleen Seberg of Mount Pleasant, was stopped at the intersection on South Grand Avenue facing north. A pickup operated by Philip Graber of Mount Pleasant, was stopped at the intersection on East Washington Street facing west. The Seberg continued through the intersection driving north. Graber failed to see the Seberg and continued through the intersection westbound. Graber’s truck struck the Seberg vehicle causing disabling damage. The combined damage of both vehicles is estimated to be in excess of $7,000.00. No injuries were reported.

Traffic Stop Leads to Arrests

On September 14, 2022, at approximately 10:15 P.M., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on US Highway 34 near Mile Marker 229 in Mount Pleasant on a vehicle for a traffic violation.

Upon speaking with the driver, later identified as Oscar Daniel Leyva Sandoval, 32, of Ottumwa, Iowa, it was discovered he currently held a suspended driving status through the State of Iowa. The vehicle was occupied by two other passengers, later identified as Jessica L. Jasso, 27, of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Deserae Ramirez, 24, of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Upon further investigation by deputies, a search was conducted of the vehicle where amounts of Methamphetamine, Marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were located.

Resulting from the investigation, Deserae was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense (D Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – (Serious Misdemeanor), and Possession of Contraband in Correctional Institution – (D Felony). Oscar was issued a summons for Driving Under Suspension – (Simple Misdemeanor), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – (Serious Misdemeanor), and was cited for Speeding Over 55 Zone (16 through 20 over) – (Non-scheduled Violation). Jessica was issued a summons for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – (Serious Misdemeanor)

Marilyn E. Hite

Marilyn E. Hite, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Delores Theresa Mickelson

Delores Theresa Mickelson, 78, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at the West Point Care Center in West Point, Iowa.

She was born on November 6, 1943, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Linus O. and Ceclia Rose (Holtkamp) Fritzjunker. On June 27, 1987, she married LeRoy Mickelson in West Point, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1998.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: LeRoy; daughter: Deborah Kassmeyer and brother: LeRoy.

Delores was a member of St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa and former member of the West Point American Legion Auxiliary. She worked for Sheaffer Pen Company and was a newspaper carrier for the Fort Madison Daily Democrat. She enjoyed embroidering pillow cases, watching television and filling out word search books.

Visitation will be held from noon to 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2022, at St. James Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. James Cemetery in St. Paul.

A memorial has been established in her memory for West Point Care Center or St. James Cemetery.

Ruth L. Wyse (final arrangements)

Ruth L. Wyse, 96, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Addington Place of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trenton Missionary Church with Rev. David Forrester officiating.  Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.  Memorials may be directed to the Trenton Missionary Church Missions to be used for mission work or to EveryStep Hospice in her memory.

Sandwich Chain Opening Location in Mount Pleasant

The Mount Pleasant City Council has approved a site plan for a Jimmy John’s. It looks like the sandwich chain, headquartered in Champaign, Illinois, will finally move forward with plans to open a drive thru only location in the other side of a two tenant commercial building on North Grand Avenue. The north side already has a tenant. Phase three of the development company’s plan is to continue south and will include more yet to be determined commercial development.
