Nathan J. “Shorty” Fetterman, 88 of Salem passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Stride Into Summer Family Walk Coming June 5th

Healthy Henry County Communities is planning a new free spring event for families. The Stride Into Summer Family Walk will feature a number of activity and educational stations along a loop walk at East Lake Park on Sunday June 5th 2-5pm. Sign in and pick up your goodie bag at the tent by the tennis courts. Organizations having activity stations include Henry County Public Health, ADDS, I-Smile, 1st Five and the Family Connection, ISU Extension and Outreach, Henry County Disability Services, and the New London, Salem, and Winfield libraries. In addition, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office will be there to fingerprint kids and provide parents with an ID kit. They will also be giving away some bike helmets for kids. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, Iowa DNR, and Henry County EMS will also have activities promoting summer safety topics. CPPC and DVIP will have kindness rocks for kids to paint and a certified car seat technician will be available if you need your car seat checked.

In case of rain, the event will be postponed until Sunday June 12th. Change in Bridge Traffic

One lane traffic on Bridge over Skunk River on White Oak Road starting Tuesday, May 17th during daytime hours.

Contractor will be doing patching work for the remainder of the week, weather permitting.

 

Weekly Crop Progress and Condition Report

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig commented today on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The report is released weekly April through November.

“Very hot temperatures and drier than normal conditions last week allowed farmers to make significant planting progress across much of Iowa,” said Secretary Naig. “As we look ahead, weather outlooks show promise in keeping planters rolling and farmers busy in the fields.”

The weekly report is also available on the USDA’s website at nass.usda.gov.

Crop Report
Significantly drier and warmer weather allowed Iowa’s farmers 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 15, 2022, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork activities included spraying and planting.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 81 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 70 percent adequate and 6 percent surplus.

Farmers planted 43 percent of Iowa’s expected corn crop during the week ending May 15, 2022, to reach 57 percent planted, 2 weeks behind last year and 9 days behind the 5-year average. Eight percent of the corn crop has emerged, 11 days behind last year and 9 days behind average. Thirty-four percent of soybeans have been planted, just over 2 weeks behind last year and 1 week behind the 5-year average. Just 3 percent of soybeans have emerged, 10 days behind the previous year and 6 days behind average. Eighty-nine percent of the expected oat crop has been planted, 16 days behind last year and 10 days behind the 5-year average. Fifty-eight percent of the oat crop has emerged, 11 days behind last year and 1 week behind average.

Hay and pasture growth improved greatly with above normal temperatures. Iowa’s hay condition rating improved to 68 percent good to excellent. Some farmers have begun their first cutting of alfalfa. Pasture condition improved to 53 percent good to excellent. Livestock conditions were good as they were turned out from muddy feedlots to pasture, although feed stocks were low.

Cecil “Gene” Eugene Pratt,

Cecil “Gene” Eugene Pratt, 73, of Ottumwa passed away on Friday May 13, 2022 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Ottumwa.  In accordance with his wishes his body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time.  Scattering of Gene’s ashes will take place at a later date. Memorials in Gene’s honor may be directed to Hospice of Wapello County or The American Cancer Society and may be mailed to the family at 606 W Walnut, Eldon, IA 52554.  Friends may leave condolences online at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com

Gene was born November 5, 1948 in Fairfield, IA to Bert Cecil and Charlotte Louise (Davis) Pratt. He graduated from Cardinal High School in 1968 and immediately joined the Navy. He married Caroline Weeks and they later divorced.

In addition to his parents and grandparents he was preceded in death by a niece, Melissa Lei Haines.

Gene is survived by son, Aaron (Laura) Pratt of Mound View, MN, two daughters, Farah of Ottumwa and Satinka (James) McCraw of Mountlake Terrace, WA, two grandchildren, Olivia and Eleanor, two sisters, Betty Haines (Mike) of Eldon, MO, Diane Box (Tom) of Eldon, IA, a brother, Phil Pratt of Bloomfield and many extended family and friends.

Georgianna Vantiger

Georgianna Vantiger, 87, of Mt. Union, died Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Park Place, Mt. Pleasant.  She was born in Burlington August 22, 1934 to Raymond E. and Vennessa Grace (Kimbrough) Dodge.  On May 26, 1956, she married James Vantiger at St Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point.

She was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School and was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.  Prior to marriage, she worked as a telephone operator, then enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her family.

She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and for twenty-six years she volunteered for Bingo at Park Place.  She was an amazing cook and was known for her peanut brittle and pies which she made for Old Threshers and church auctions.

Survivors include her husband of Mt. Union; children, Bill (Pam) Vantiger of Yarmouth, David Vantiger of Mt. Union, Patty (Larry) Ford of Mt. Pleasant, Scott Vantiger of Mt. Union, and Karen (Kurt) Palar of Danville; daughter-in-law Marcy Vantiger of Mt. Union; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Floyd (Patty) Penrod and Dick Penrod of Burlington; sisters Florence (Paul) Bolander, Elsie Stafford, and Barb (Gary) Glendening all of Burlington.  She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather Ray Penrod; son Joe Vantiger; brother James Penrod, sister Viola Patton, and one bonus son, Rick Rodgers.

The funeral service for Mrs. Vantiger will be Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Elliott Chapel, New London, with Father James Flattery officiating.  Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery, rural Mt. Union.  Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 4 -7 PM.  Memorials have been established for Park Place Activity Fund and EveryStep Hospice.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Deborah Eileen Collins

Deborah Eileen Collins, 72, of Albia and formerly Delta, Iowa, died Saturday, May 14, 2022 at Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia, Iowa.  She was born June 6, 1949 to Bate T. and Dorotha M. Trainer Collins.

Deborah was a graduate of Fremont High School.  She spent most of her life as a caregiver for her parents and also helped elderly people in their homes.  She enjoyed sight-seeing and loved animals.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her parents; her brother William T. Collins of Missouri; and her sister Juanita Gauler of Muscatine.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and a graveside Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Jaggar Cemetery, rural Danville.
