Michael K. Ward

Michael K. Ward, 69, of Bonaparte, Iowa passed away at 12:02 p.m., Friday, September 10, 2021at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 16, 2021, at  Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington. A Memorial  Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., at Schmitz Funeral Home Farmington, with Scott Butler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory to the Bonaparte Fire and Rescue or Farmington EMT’s.

Schmitz Funeral Home of Farmington is assisting the family with local arrangements.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.schmitzfuneralhomes.com.

Vera Jean Bermel

Vera Jean Bermel, 86, of Wapello passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.  Private graveside service will be held at a later date in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.  Sympathy messages can be left for the family at www.sandfuneralservice.com.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello is caring for Vera’s arrangements. 

Vera Jean Posten Bermel was born on November 4, 1934, in Nichols, Iowa, she was daughter of Vera Ellen and Lovell Ross (Haskins) Posten.  Vera graduated from Muscatine High School in 1952.  On February 4, 1956, Vera was united in marriage to William Edward Bermel, Sr.  They were the parents of Jean, Pat and Wm. “Ed” Bermel Jr.   Vera and Bill farmed in Wilton, Durant and Wapello.  Vera also worked at Woolworth 5 & 10, Heinz and GPC in Muscatine.  After moving to Wapello Vera drove school bus for 17 years.  In 1987, Vera and Bill divorced. Vera continued to live in Wapello with her daughter, Jean.  Vera enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes men and women sports.  Vera played basketball for the Muscatine YWCA several years, she also enjoying bowling, playing golf, gardening and fishing. From her garden she loved eating her tomatoes and freezing the other vegetables.  She was a member of the Muscatine Sweet Adelines for 13 years and The Port City Pearls.  Vera was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.  Vera and Jean enjoyed their cabin at Lake Odessa, eating out and traveling together. 

Vera will be missed by her daughters, Jean and Pat; many nieces and two nephews. 

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; son, Wm. “Ed” Bermel, Jr.; and brothers, Don, Bill and Jack.       

Drug Charges

On September 6, 2021, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol investigated an incident in Salem, Iowa. It was learned several juveniles consumed ‘ACID’ or LSD, resulting in a vehicle crash. A subsequent investigation was initiated.

On September 10, 2021, a search warrant was executed in the 400 block of North Golfview Place in Winfield, Iowa.

Matthew Puumala, 19 of Winfield, was arrested and charged with delivery of LSD (class B felony); possession with intent to deliver LSD (class B felony); failure to affix drug tax stamp (class D felony) and possession with intent to deliver marijuana (class D felony).

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Winfield Police Department, Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.

SCC TO SHOWCASE THREE FACILITY UPGRADE PROJECTS ON WEST BURLINGTON CAMPUS

Southeastern Community College is celebrating the state-of-the-art renovations of its auto collision lab, precision machining lab, and the new Harry and Virginia Art Gallery on its West Burlington campus.

Why:               Total cost for the facility and equipment upgrades tops $1.25 million.
The renovated labs will facilitate expanded learning and teaching opportunities for skills development. The upgrades were funded by the State of Iowa’s Accelerated Career Education (ACE) program.

Open in 2020, the art gallery includes adjustable walls to transform the space to match the art collection’s essence. This space has both increased educational experiences for SCC’s fine arts and music programs and added a new area to exhibit the work of Iowa artists. The gallery was made possible by a grant from The Murray Foundation.

X23 Open South of Lowell

The Henry County Engineer’s office says X23 south of Lowell is open to the public.

The section of roadway that was damaged is now gravel with a 30 MPH speed limit.

It is imperative that drivers use caution and obey signage.
