From the Mount Pleasant City Council Meeting

The Mount Pleasant City Council met in regular session Wednesday.  Following a public hearing the Council approved the City’s official statement regarding the issuance of General Obligation Bonds not to exceed $3,000,000 and the loan payment agreement with the Mount Pleasant Municipal Utilities. The Council authorized the Clerk and Administrator to move forward with selling the bonds.  The Utilities will use the funding from the bonds to help pay for a new city well and then will repay the City.

The second reading of an amendment to change yield signs to stop signs at the intersection of S. Adams Place, S. Harrison Place and S. Harrison Street with East Webster was approved.  A resident in the this area asked the City to consider the change. The second reading of an amendment to the ordinance regarding parking on E. Clay Street was approved.  This amendment was also proposed after a resident expressed safety concerns. The amendment would restrict parking in the 300 block of E. Clay.

Mount Pleasant residents can now operate golf carts and off road vehicles on all streets except on Washington Street and North Grand Avenue from Washington to Winfield Avenue. The Council waived the second reading and approved an amendment to the ordinance governing the use of these vehicles on city streets.

Mayor Steve Brimhall was authorized to sign a High Quality Jobs application being submitted by MidAm Building Supply for State funding for the ten new jobs that will be created when their new facility is finished.

The Council accepted the low bid in the amount of $5,299 submitted for the demolition of a city owned house at 502 N. Hamlin.

Three city personnel decisions were made….the Council approved  hiring Brittney McNiell as the administrative assistant in the City office. Carey Helmick was hired for a part-time position in the Solid Waste Collection program and Chris Ellington was given a raise for  completing the Waste Water Treatment Plant grade one operator license. The Council also approved the appointment of Tyler Scott to the Fire Department.

Updates From Mount Pleasant Fire Chief

Just after 5:30 this morning (Wednesday) Mount Pleasant Fire Department was dispatched to North Palm Avenue to the Chesapeake Apartments. Flames were visible from a second story apartment. There was smoke and a minimum amount of water damage. 12 firefighters responded with an engine, the tower truck and the command vehicle and were on the scene for about an hour and a half. Mount Pleasant Fire Chief Drew Schumacher praised a neighbor who ran to check on the tenant and reacted quickly, closing the door so the fire could be contained in the single apartment.

The fire crews were busy late Tuesday afternoon.  At about 4 pm Tuesday they were called to 307 W. Vine where Alliant Energy workers were doing core drilling and apparently cut a service line. Two engines, the command vehicle and 10 firefighters were on the scene for about 20 minutes.  Gas contractors were able to shut off the gas and avert any further problems. Firefighters were called out again at 5:20 pm to the Mount Pleasant HyVee for a freon leak. Two engines and 10 firefighters were on the scene for about 15 minutes.  And then….an hour after that an engine and the tanker responded to a car fire on Iowa Avenue south of Mount Pleasant.  It was determined that a pile of pallets was on fire, not a vehicle.
