More Road Construction

Henry County Road Department is placing lane traffic signals for one lane roadway on New London Road south of Lowell until further notice.

Please drive with caution in this area.

Doris Joan Warth

Doris Joan Warth, 85, of New London, died Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.  She was born in Lee County, Iowa September 15, 1935 to Andrew Henry and Bertha Mabel Murphy Hammer.

On October 22, 1966 she married Donald Wesley Warth in West Burlington; he preceded her in death.

She attended Lee County Country School through 8th grade and then attended Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Mrs. Warth was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith.  She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and when she could hear…listening to Doris Jean play and sing songs she wrote, crocheting and knitting, going for car rides, and when able she enjoyed sitting outside visiting with friends and neighbors.

Survivors include her daughters Gloria Ann Stenner of Burlington and Doris Jean Warth of New London, one son Donald Wesley Jr. of New London, and five grandchildren, Eugenia, Tamera, Jolene, Ryan and Tyler.  Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Hammer and sisters Grace Peek and Mary Wills.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm, Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Elliott Chapel, New London with Pastor Rod Cooper officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until the time of the service.  A memorial has been established to help with funeral expenses.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Paul Edward Skow

Paul Edward Skow, 74, of Argyle, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 6, 2021, at his home.

He was born on August 10, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Richard and Hazel Mason Skow.

He is survived by his son: Jeff Skow; daughter: Jeannette Kruger; sisters: Helen Kempker, Jerri Coats, Norma Cu; brother: Dicky Skow; stepchildren: David Skow and Dana Kruger.

He was preceded is death by his parents; brothers: Gerald and Herman.

Paul was a graduate of Argyle High School.  He was a truck driver for DC.  He enjoyed racing, fishing, and participating in track in high school.

His has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

Per his wishes no services are being held.

Trash Fire Spreads

Mount Pleasant Fire Department was called out Sunday about 5 pm to  the 1400 block of West Washington.  An individual was burning trash in a barrel. The fire spread to a nearby woodpile.  One engine and 4 firefighters responded and extinguished the fire in less than half an hour.

Henry County Road Construction Continues

Henry County announces road construction on Oasis Avenue, south of Hwy 78; Goodyear Road, east of Franklin Ave; Iowa Avenue, south of Mt. Pleasant for Monday, August 9th and Tuesday, August 10th.

 

Work will include one lane road closures with flaggers. Please use caution when traveling these areas.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Karen Schantz

Karen Schantz, 82, of Wapello passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Wapello Specialty Care.   Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Wapello Cemetery.  A memorial has been established.  Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com. Karen Jean Trier was born on March 30, 1939 at the Washington County Hospital, the daughter of Charles Cleo and Ruth Kathryn (Picken) Trier.  Karen was a 1956 graduate of West Chester High School.  On December 28, 1962, she was united in marriage to John Joseph Schantz.  Karen was the owner and operator of The Grandview Country Café for over 15 years; she was involved in Shriner’s with her husband, John and in her earlier years bowling.   Her greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Karen is survived by her children, Cindy Singleton, Greg (Cathy) Greiner, Jeanne (Paul) Nichols, Chris (Kenny) Freeman, Julie Rich and John Jr. (Joellen) Schantz; 16 grandchildren, Stacey (Michael) Briggs, Michael (Jennifer) Singleton, Cody (Kenna) Greiner, Ryan (Jennifer) Greiner, Megan (Jay) Smith, Kori (Alex) Buffington, Britney (David Klein) Yotter, Bailey (Cameron Kemmer) Yotter, Caleb Spate, Carley (Chris) Rapp, Jacie (Kevin Essig) Spate and Jamie (Jack Stefanski) Spate; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Annaka, Jaxton, Chase, Sinjn, Bentley, Hudson, Olive, Sam, Jude and one more great-grandson on the way; siblings, Sharon (Gail) Niffenegger, Dick (Ruth) Trier, Joelyn Zickefoose and John (Nancy) Trier and brother-in-law, Gilbert Brown.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on November 28, 2007; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dillon and Peg Schantz and brother-in-law, Les Zickefoose; son-in-law, Mike Singleton and sister, Margaret Brown.
