Yvonne Sloan

Yvonne Sloan, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Henry County Health Center.

Yvonne was born November 23, 1941, in Henry County, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Emma (Vaughn) DeVol. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1960 and attended Nursing School in Burlington. Yvonne was united in marriage to W. Wray Sloan on July 14, 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Yvonne and Wray made their home in the Mt. Pleasant community where she worked as a nurse for the Burlington and Mt. Pleasant hospitals on the OB floor for many years. She was also an EMT for Henry County Ambulance Service. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and loved helping with church activities and singing in the choir. Yvonne enjoyed playing cards, sewing, cooking, taking care of others and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Yvonne is survived by her husband Wray; 4 children, Tamra (Scott) Gilmore of Mt. Pleasant, Robin Sloan of Mt. Pleasant, Barbara (John) Martin of Winfield, and John (Jennifer) Sloan of Winfield; 5 granddaughters Miranda (Jared) Young, Hayle (Tyler) Schildknecht, Emalee Martin, Carlee Sloan, and Brylee Sloan; great grandson Micah Dean Schildknecht; brother Alan (Truly) DeVol of New Braunfels, TX and sister Linda Sloan of Mt. Pleasant.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 4, 2020, at Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.  Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, the family will be present 4:00 – 6:00 PM.  Masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be followed. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for U of I Stead Family Children’s Hospital.  The service will be livestreamed on Powell Funeral Homes Facebook page and at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

 

Myron R. McGuire

Myron R. McGuire, 82, died Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Myron was born August 18, 1938 in Wayland, Iowa, the son of Max and Bessie (Allred) McGuire.  He graduated form Wayland High School.  He served in the United States Navy from 1956-1959.  On June 24, 1961 Myron was united in marriage to Trudi Newman in Mount Sterling, Iowa.  He worked for J.I. Case in Burlington for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

Myron is survived by a son Micheal (Angela) McGuire of Mount Pleasant; a daughter Angela (Dan) Loving of Birmingham; 10 grandchildren; and a brother Harry McGuire of Olds.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Trudi, a son Byron “Chip” McGuire, a sister Meriel Benge, and three borthers: Emery, Roger and Richard McGuire.

 

According to Myron’s wishes he has been cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date.  The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant is caring for Myron and his family.

Darrel L. Peterson

Darrel L. Peterson, 72, of Mt. Pleasant, was found at his residence on Sunday, November 22, 2020 to have previously passed away.

Darrel Lavern Peterson was born April 21, 1948 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. He was the son of Vern Arlin and Gwendolyn Louise (Dold) Peterson. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1966. He married Connie Sue Williams. The couple later divorced. He then married Patricia Willey. The couple later divorced.

Darrel was employed for many years as a carpet layer with Rheinschmidt’s Floor Covering. For a brief time, Darrel assumed the operation of the Shelter Insurance Agency after his father retired.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Penny and Mike Anding of Washington, IA; his mother – Gwen Peterson of Mt. Pleasant; a sister – Nadine Martin of Mt. Pleasant; 4 grandchildren – Drew Peterson, Kelsey Anding, Maquel Anding and Derek Anding; a niece – Angie Withers and a nephew – Seth Martin.

His father, a daughter – Lori Peterson and an infant brother – Ronald Arlin Peterson, precede Darrel in death.

Lonnie D. Welcher

Lonnie D. Welcher, 66, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at his home in Mt. Pleasant.

Mark Carlson Wagner

Mark Carlson Wagner, 70, of San Diego, California, formerly of Danville, died Monday, November 23, 2020 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. He was born June 3, 1950 in Burlington, to Frank Holly and Kay Carlson Wagner.
He graduated from Danville High School and received his BA degree in secondary math from Western Illinois. Later, he obtained a second degree in computer science in California. Due to his expertise in working with junior high students, he was named Teacher of the Year for Escondido School District in California.
Farming was Mark’s other lifelong career. Besides farming his own ground, he managed his parents’ entire farming operation later in life. Antiques were his hobby and he refinished oak furniture throughout his life. Riding on RAGBRAI was Mark’s other passion. He was an avid cyclist and completed thirty of those bike rides across Iowa.
Survivors include his sisters, Jill (George) Bowers of Mesa, AZ and Pam (Bob) Day of Carlisle, IA; two nieces, Jessica Bowers and Marcia (Dan) Johnson and their children, Alyssa and Luke; and a nephew, Steven (Kathryn) Day and daughter Emma. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation at Elliott Chapel, New London, will be Friday, November 27, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; the family will not be present. A Graveside Celebration of Mark’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 28, at Jaggar Cemetery, rural Danville with Rev. Dean Graber officiating. According to his wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Danville Fire and Rescue and Great River Hospice House. Corwin “Rock” Williams

Corwin “Rock” Williams 84, of Wapello passed away on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Highland Regional Medical Center in Sebring, Florida.  Private family graveside services will be held at a later date.  Memorials have been established for the Wapello Cemetery Association and Wapello Fire and Rescue in Rock’s memory.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Corwin Leon Williams was born on April 19, 1936 in Wapello, Iowa the son of John and Eva (Milligan) Williams.  Rock was a 1954 graduate of Wapello High School.  On June 30, 1957, he was united to Patricia Schroeder in Muscatine.   Rock was the owner/operator of The Boat Shop in Wapello for over 37 years.  He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and had served in the Army National Guard.    He enjoyed golfing, wintering in Florida, duck hunting, pool, fishing, dancing and his all-time favorite going to the river.

Rock will be deeply missed by his children, Chet Williams of Wapello and Lynn (Geoff) Proffitt of Crawfordville; six grandchildren, Lauren Proffitt, Josh (Olivia) Williams, Meg Proffitt, Jenna Williams, Chloe Proffitt and Blythe Proffitt; two great-grandchildren Rueben Williams and Slate Robinson; sister, Janice Grimm of Davenport and special friend, Barb Keltner of Wapello.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pat and a brother in infancy.

Brent Mills

Brent Mills, 53, of rural Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at his home.

Brent was born August 1, 1967, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, son of Donald and Violet (Stafford) Mills. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1985. He made his home in the Mt. Pleasant community and went on to work several jobs, eventually deciding on a career in trucking. Brent enjoyed the outdoors, working in the garage, camping and traveling. He also loved NASCAR racing.

Brent is survived by his son Blake Mills, of Mt. Pleasant; his partner Rachel Remmers of Mt. Pleasant; mother Violet Mills, of Mt. Pleasant; 5 sisters, Deb (Joe) Hudson of Salem, Teresa Barnet, Krista Mills, Sherry Mills, Carol (Tony) Gilpin all of Mt. Pleasant; 2 brothers Kevin (Dan) Mills of Urbandale, and Steve (Darla Clubb) Mills of Mt. Pleasant; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Mills and his grandparents.

Funeral Service will be held 10:30 AM Monday, November 30, 2020 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant.  Burial will be in the Hillsboro Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 5:00 PM on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the Olson-Powell Chapel, the family will not be present.  Social distancing guidelines will be followed and masks are required.  A memorial fund has been established for Brent’s son Blake Mills.  The service will be livestreamed on Powell Funeral Homes Facebook page and at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
