Des Moines County Pursuit Report

On June 7, 2020 at 8:49 PM a Des Moines County Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle being operated by Zachary Judd for multiple traffic violations at Curran and Agency Street in Burlington.  Judd failed to stop his vehicle and attempted to elude the Deputy.  A vehicle pursuit ensued until Judd left his vehicle in the 500 block of S. Garfield and fled on foot.  Judd was apprehended in the 500 block of S. Marshall after a brief search of the area.  Judd resisted arrest and a deputy received a minor bodily injury while taking Judd into custody.

 

It was determined that Judd caused property damage, including damage to multiple fences while attempting to elude law enforcement, both with his vehicle and while on foot.

 

Zachary Allen Judd was was placed under arrest for Felony Eluding, a class D felony, 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, a class D felony, Interference with Official Acts Causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor, 2 counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine and Marijuana), both serious misdemeanors, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor, Driving while Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor, and No Insurance.  Zachary Judd was taken to the Des Moines County Correctional Center and is being held with a $5,000 Bond.

 

This investigation is ongoing with additional charges pending.

Mount Pleasant Street Project Update

Kinney & Sons have began working on the storm sewer improvements on Adams St. from Washington St. They are connecting to the intake at the north east corner of Washington St. & Adams St. They will lay storm sewer pipe northwest approx. 48’ and then set a manhole. From this manhole they will continue laying storm sewer north along the east side of Adams St. to Monroe St. At the current time customers of Swailes Auto Supply and the parking lot to the Professional Building can be accessed  from the south off Washington St. or the north from Monroe St. We ask that if you are not going to Swailes Auto Supply or the Professional Building parking lot that you use an alternate route.

 

Robert Lewis Kaufman

Robert Lewis Kaufman, 78, of West Point, formerly of Lockridge, Iowa, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2020, in West Point.

 

He was born on March 4, 1942, on the family farm in Wayland, Iowa, the son of Andy and Hazel (Conrad) Kaufman.

 

He enjoyed mushroom hunting, farming, raising and trading various animals on the farm. Robert worked at Bluebird in Mt. Pleasant before he went into farming full time.

 

He is survived by his children: Craig (Janice) Kaufman of Lockridge, Iowa and Julie (Howard Harvey) Hill of Bonaparte, Iowa; one grandson: C.J. Kaufman of Lockridge, Iowa and two sisters: Louise Pieper of West Point, Iowa and Lois Fields of Riverside, Iowa.

 

He was preceded in death by: his parents and two brothers: Leroy Kaufman and Raymond Kaufman.

 

Robert will be cremated and there will be no services per Robert’s request.

Saturday Morning Crash

On June 6, 2020, at approximately 5:13AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle crash in the 1400 Grid of Franklin Avenue, Wayland, Iowa. After an investigation, it was found that Brandin Lee Bromell (25 years of age) of Lockridge, Iowa, was driving a blue, 2002, Chevrolet S10 pickup northbound. Brandin made statements a deer ran out in front of his vehicle and he swerved to miss the deer. After swerving to miss the deer, Brandin lost control of the vehicle and entered the west side ditch of the roadway. After entering the ditch, the vehicle struck and ramped over a driveway which then caused the vehicle to strike a utility pole. The vehicle was a total loss. Brandin was transported to the Henry County Health Center for unknown injuries. Brandin was given citations for Failing to Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Provide Financial Liability in an Accident.

Assisting with this vehicle crash was Wayland Fire and First Responders and Paramedics with the Henry County Health Center.
