The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) will present a Welcome to Medicare seminar from 10:00am – 11:30am in the Willard and Canella Conference rooms at 5445 Avenue O, Fort Madison (lower level-east side of building). The Children’s Discovery Center at the Mt. Pleasant Public Library is open from 10:00am – 12:00pm this morning!  The Discovery Center is geared toward younger children, but there is something to “discover for all ages!  Look for the Discovery Center sign on the side of the Mt. Pleasant Library and follow the colorful sidewalk!

Get fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggs, plants, and more at the Donnellson Farmer’s Market every Thursday until August 29 from 4:30pm-6:30pm at Railroad Park!

Get a turkey tenderloin or porkchop at the Rotary Barbeque from 5:00pm – 7:00pm in the Wright Family Pavilion at the Midwest Old Threshers campgrounds. Tickets are $15 for an adult or $7 for a child and are available at the Mount Pleasant Two Rivers Bank and Trust, 5 Star Community Credit Union, or from any Rotary member. The funds raised at the annual BBQ support Rotary’s mission in communities locally and globally like promoting literacy, sponsoring local blood drives, and coordinating immunization efforts.

A tour of Mt. Pleasant History is available today 10:00am – Noon!  The following destinations are open during these special hours:

  • The Van Allen House, boyhood home of world-famous physicist Dr. James Van Allen at 204 North Van Buren, will be open.  The house, circa 1862, was home to 3 generations of Van Allens and is decorated with original & period furniture.  For more information:  www.henrycountryheritagetrust.org
  • Iowa Wesleyan Archives Room, 402 West Madison Street in the Henry County Heritage Center Museum is open.  This room holds the physical memories of Iowa Wesleyan University, including records, books, trophies, banners, letter sweaters, photographs and more.  For more information:  www.henrycountytrust.org
  • The Harlan-Lincoln House, 101 West Broad Street is open during today’s tour.  This house was built by U.S. Senator James Harlan in 1876.  Memorabilia of Senator’s Harlan and President Abraham Lincoln is on display.  For more information:  www.harlanlincoln.org
