Herbert James “Jim” Stonehouse

Herbert James “Jim” Stonehouse, 83, of Mount Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at New London Specialty Care.

 

Jim was born on November 19, 1941, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Herbert and Mary (Ford) Stonehouse.  He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1959.  Following graduation, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy on April 13, 1959.  He was a Gunner Mate Third Class serving on the USS Foxx Destroyer.  He was honorably discharged on July 24, 1962.    Jim was united in marriage to Connie Jean Schadt on April 2, 1962.  

 

Jim started his telephone career as a lineman with Contel Telephone Company, in 1966. He transferred to Chariton, Iowa with a management position for 27 years, retiring in 1993. Later that year moving back to Mount Pleasant where they have resided for the last 32 years.

 

Jim had an outgoing personality and made friends easily.  He had a unique ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and make a real connection.  In his free time, Jim was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan.  He also enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, golfing and going to the Oakland Mills River where he had a cabin for several years. Being outdoors, he wanted to share his passion with anyone that would join him.  He worked as a volunteer for several years with the Mount Pleasant Police Department and was a longtime member of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department, Kiwanis member and a devoted volunteer at the Midwest Old Threshers.  

 

Jim’s greatest joy was the love he had to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and great grandchildren and cherished all the summer vacations they had together.  He was a proud and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

 

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his wife, Connie of 62 years, his children, Kevin (Lisa) Stonehouse, of Box Elder, South Dakota and Kristi (Tony) Maxwell of Mount Pleasant, his grandchildren, Chelsea (Cory) Hatchel, Courtney (Brett) Sanchelli, Allison Evans (Trey), Noah Evans (Madison), Ashley (Todd) Lohmann, Alissa (Aric) Alexander, Allison (Dusty) Scarff, his great grandchildren, Harper, Eden, Jaycee, Michael, Malia, Alina, Abel, Avalynn, Avery, Arlington and Jericho.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sandra.

 

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant with Reverend Court Fischer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2025, where the family will be present from 5 to 7 that evening.  A memorial has been established in his memory.
