College Baseball: Wesleyan’s Beaber Named CAC Coach of the Year

Mount Pleasant — Iowa Wesleyan head baseball coach and Mount Pleasant alum Blake Beaber has been named the Continental Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, the league has announced.

Beaber, who has been with Iowa Wesleyan since 2016, successfully navigated the Tigers through their returning season to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) this year.

Wesleyan finished their season with an overall record of 21-30 and a third-place finish in the CAC Championships Tournament.

It was the most wins in a single season for the program since winning 24 games in 2012.

Also earning postseason accolades were pitcher Luis Ayesa, Cristian Cordero and Derek Marrufo, who were all All-Conference choices.

Emergency Responders Busy Friday Morning

Emergency responders and fire departments in the KILJ listening area were busy Friday morning.  Just before 9 am there was a single vehicle crash reported just north of Mount Pleasant on Highway 218.  Initial reports indicate a vehicle went off the roadway into the medium.  There was also  a report that one person was injured.

Just before 9:30 Friday morning both Olds and Winfield Fire Departments were paged out for an electric pole fire.  The pole was located at the intersection of 110 Street and Lexington Avenue.  Apparently, at the time of the page the entire pole was on fire and had caught the ditch on fire.

HCHC offers free pre-diabetes class May 16th

Henry County Health Center’s Diabetes Education Center will offer a FREE pre-diabetes class on Monday, May 16, 2022, from Noon to 1:00 p.m. The class will be conducted in the Diabetes Education Center, located in Suite 25 at HCHC.  Directions will be given when you call 319-385-6518 to register.  Please register by Noon on Friday, May 13th.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you should attend this class:

  • Are your fasting blood sugars between 100 and 125?
  • Do you have a parent, sister or brother with diabetes?
  • Are you are overweight, inactive, or have poor eating habits?
  • Are you extremely thirsty, urinate frequently or have unexplained weight loss?

The purpose of the class is to help at-risk individuals reverse habits that may be leading toward a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes and its many complications. Topics will include an overview of the different types of diabetes, diet, exercise, and diabetes prevention.

Approximately 90 million people in the United States have pre-diabetes and many are not aware of it. Recent research shows that some long-term damage, especially to the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during pre-diabetes.

Prep Track: Mount Pleasant Qualifies Several for State Track and Field Meet

Mount Pleasant — The Mount Pleasant track and field team will be sending several to the 2022 State Track and Field Championships next week.

The Panthers, who hosted a Class 3A state qualifying meet at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex, faired well despite record high temperatures.

Starting the day off right was Kenna Lamm, who clinched a first place finish in the 100m dash, winning in 13.18 seconds. Lamm beat out Assumption senior Alaina McConnell.

Panther senior Abby Blint was electric yesterday. Despite a seventh place finish in the 1,500m run, Blint rolled to a win in the 3,000m run, crossing the finish line in 11:40.25.

Iowa State recruit Jadan Brumbaugh was up to her usual tricks in field events, with easy wins in the shot put and discus.

Brumbaugh went 48 feet, 4.25 inches in the shot, while going 134 feet, 1 inch in the discus.

On the boys’ side, Will Davidson continued his strong season — qualifying for three separate events.

Davidson went 22.52 to finish as runner up in the 200m dash, he coupled that with a 15.18 in the 110m hurdles and a runner up finish in the long jump.

Panther junior Isaac Jerrel is also headed to the state meet.

Jerrell was a runner up to Brayden Hartman of Washington in the shot put with a heave of 48 feet, 9.5 inches.

In relays the Mount Pleasant boys’ 4×800 team is going to the Blue Oval.

That team consisted of Jacob Richtman, Gabe Feldmann, Isaac Rynders and Isiah Albright.

They were runners-up in the event.

The Panther girls will be sending the distance medley quartet of Tristian Shull, Andi Scott, Elsie Lange and Abby Blint.

The full list of area qualifiers will be announced Saturday.

Prep Track: New London Boys Capture SQM Team Title

Sigourney — The New London Tiger boys’ track team are state qualifying meet team champions.

The Tigers got supreme performances up and down their lineup en route to the win yesterday at Sigourney.

Automatic qualifiers for New London include:

  • Kade Benjamin – High Jump
  • Carter Allen – Discus
  • Carter Allen – Shot Put
  • Alexander Julian – 3,200m
  • Seth Bailey – 1,600m
  • Rylan Martin – 800m
  • 4×100 relay (Boden Pickle, Reann Seberg, Joel Lacy and Josh Catala)

College Softball: Former WMU Star Anderson Named NJCAA Region 11 Pitcher of the Year

Ottumwa — Freshman Madie Anderson (Mt. Pleasant, IA/Winfield Mt. Union) of the Indian Hills Softball team has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI DI Softball Pitcher of the Year, announced by the the conference office on Wednesday.

Anderson has also been named to the NJCAA All-Region XI First-Team, becoming the fourth Warrior to earn Pitcher of the Year honors since 2017.

The former Winfield-Mount Union ace led the Warriors to its most team wins since 2006 after posting a team-high 17 wins in the circle.

Anderson tossed seven complete games on the year, including three shutouts.

The freshman pitched a team-high 105.0 innings on the year and posted a 2.20 earned run average. Anderson struck out a team-high 129 batters while issuing just 33 walks.

Anderson and the Warriors are set to host the NJCAA Midwest District Tournament at R.L. Hellyer Field on May 14 against Crowder College (MO).

The best-of-three series gets underway at 2:00 PM Saturday with a doubleheader and an if necessary game on Sunday, May 15.

College Sports: Wesleyan Hosting Fundraising Golf Tournament

Mount Pleasant — The Iowa Wesleyan University Athletics Department has announced the return of the Tiger Athletics Golf Outing, which will take place at the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course in Fort Madison, Iowa on July 29th, 2022.

The funds that are raised from this year’s golf outing will go directly toward the renovation and relocation of the Iowa Wesleyan weight room on campus.
