College Baseball: Wesleyan Splits with Mount Mercy

The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team split with Mount Mercy yesterday, dropping game one 10-0 and rebounding with a 2-0 win over the Mustangs in game two.

In game one, Mount Mercy used a seven run 6th inning to pull ahead and never look back.

Cauy Massner took the loss, working five innings allowing four hits and six runs, only two earned.

Phillip Guerrero had a single and a stolen bag to lead the Wesleyan offense.

In game two, Luis Ayesa twirled a complete game shutout helping the Tigers earn a 2-0 win.

Ayesa allowed just four hits, four walks while striking out 14 hitters.

Cristian Cordero and Jackson Van Roekel each had a run batted in as the Tigers only had three hits.

The split moved Wesleyan to 13-26 overall.

They’ll be in action next Tuesday when they take on Hannibal-LaGrange in Hannibal, Missouri.

Game one of the twinbill is set to start at 12:00 p.m.

Women’s College Golf: Duncan Wins Individual Crown at Clarke Spring Invite

Aubrey Duncan carded an 85 claiming medalist honors for the Iowa Wesleyan women’s golf team at the Clarke Invite in Galena, Illinois.

Duncan, a freshman from Columbus Junction, finished three strokes better than that of second place.

Former Mount Pleasant standout Michal Wohlleber finished tied for 10th, with Karli Kirchner not far behind in 12th.

The men were led by Brevin Wilson’s 75.

That score placed the Mount Pleasant alum in a tie for 6th overall.

Bailey Shellady carded an 80, with Trace White shooting an 81.

The men finished in a tie for 6th in the team race.

They’ll golf next on April 11th in the William Penn Invite, while the women’s team will take part in the Storm Spring Classic in Indianola on the 13th.

College Football: Iowa State’s Bouman Announces Transfer

Iowa State quarterback Aidan Bouman is leaving the program.

Bouman, a four-star recruit from Buffalo, Minnesota, did not appear in any games in his first two seasons in Ames.

Bouman is the son of former NFL quarterback Todd Bouman.

The gunslinger from the Land of 10,000 Lakes will have three  of eligibility when he lands on a new institution.

College Football: Bouman Out, Dekkers In as Future After Purdy

With the departure of Bouman, the quarterback room will be all Hunter Dekkers — who is ready to take over as Iowa State’s starting quarterback.

The former West Sioux standout appeared in seven games the past two years behind starter Brock Purdy. It is a spot Purdy has manned since October of 2018.

“I think for him, it’s a little different when you go in there and be the guy and get all the reps. He’s done a great job, asks great questions. He’s highly motivated.”

That’s Cyclone offensive coordinator Tom Manning who says Dekkers’ arm strength is obvious but now it is about running the offense.

He has a strong arm, but there’s a lot more to playing quarterback than throwing the ball downfield. But Hunter has been really fun to be around.”

The Cyclones open their season on September 3rd, when they take on Southeast Missouri State at Jack Trice Stadium.

Hwy 78 Bridge Closure

Replacement of the Iowa 78 bridge over the Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern Railroad, about 2.5 miles west of Richland, in Keokuk County, will require closing the Iowa 78 bridge over the railroad beginning on Monday, April 11, until late fall 2022, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield construction office.

During this project, through traffic on Iowa 78 will be detoured using Keokuk/Jefferson County Road V-63 (270th Avenue), Jefferson County Road H-17 (120th Street), and Iowa 1. Local traffic will have access to Iowa 78 except for the lanes crossing the bridge over the railroad at Iowa 78 mile marker 8.8 (see map).

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.

Daily Jail Count

Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
