Mount Pleasant, IA – March 31, 2022 – Jordan Ashton, a Mount Pleasant native, will take the
reins of the Tigers Men’s Basketball program, effective April 11th.
Ashton spent the 2021-22 academic year as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota
Duluth. During this season, the team earned the most wins in over 50 years in program history
and went undefeated with a perfect 13-0 record at home, the first time since the 1990-91 season.
The team received their highest national ranking, fifth, in school history and earned the title of
NSIC North Division Conference Champions. Ashton coached the NSIC North Division Player
of the Year and two First-Team NSIC All-Conference players.
Ashton knows how to win, both as a coach and a player. He spent two years coaching at the
University of South Dakota and Kirkwood Community College. While at South Dakota, Ashton
contributed to a team that would win seven more wins than the previous season and a third-place
finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. While at Kirkwood Community College, he assisted
the Eagles in winning the 2019 NJCAA National Championship, coaching the National Player of
the Year and five All-Region Players.
As an athlete, Coach Ashton competed under Head Coach Ben Jacobson at the University of
Northern Iowa. He led the team in minutes played, three-point percentage (44%), and was the
third-leading scorer. Ashton spent one year at Iowa State University competing under Head
Coach Steve Prohm, a year at Kirkwood Community College under Head Coach Bryan Petersen
when the team won a national championship, and two years at Northwest Missouri State
University under Head Coach Ben McCollum. Coach Ashton played high school basketball at
Mount Pleasant Community High School, where he assisted in leading the team to become 3A
State Champions in 2012. Ashton was named the Class 3A Player of the Year, 1st-Team
All-State, and State Tournament MVP.
Before the University of Minnesota Duluth, Ashton was the assistant coach/offensive coordinator
for the Iowa Wesleyan Men’s Basketball Team for the 2020-2021 season, the Tigers’ final season
as an NCAA Division III member. The Tigers made an appearance in the semifinals of the
SLIAC Conference Tournament and saw a First-Team All-Conference player in Jarryd
Fernandes. Coach Ashton assisted in recruiting many of the talented players that IW saw on the
court this past season.

Iowa City — Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz says his job is to make the Iowa offense better and criticism comes with the territory.

The Hawkeyes ranked next to last in the Big Ten in total offense last season despite a 10-4 record and a West division title.

Ferentz says he is trying to get redshirt freshman Joe Labas up to speed this spring so he is able to compete against Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla.

He says no decision will be made on a starting quarterback until preseason practice.

Ferentz was named the quarterbacks coach after Ken O’Keefe retired and says his new role is to help them do their job better.

Typically, the Hawkeyes do not host a spring game but hold a fan event in its place. No announcement on that has been made at this time.

Iowa City — Iowa junior point guard Joe Toussaint has notified head coach Fran McCaffery of his intentions to transfer from the Hawkeye basketball program.

Toussaint led the team in assists (3.2) and steals (1.4) per game (3.2) and averaged 4.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 36 games this past season.

In three seasons with the Hawkeyes, Toussaint played in 98 games, including 41 starts, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 assists, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per contest.

Also joining him with a new home will be London big man Josh Ogundele.

Ogundele announced his transfer last night.

He appeared in 19 games this year and averaged 1.5 points per game.

New Orleans — The University of Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon has been selected to the Men’s 3-Point Championship roster for the 33rd annual College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at Xavier University of Louisiana’s Convocation Center in New Orleans tonight.

Bohannon helped lead the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten Tournament Championship and 26 wins — the second highest single-season total in school history — as a sixth-year senior in 2021-22.

The native of Marion, Iowa, played in all 36 games ranking second on the team in points per game at 11 per night.

Bohannon is the sixth Hawkeye to be invited to the event and first since Peter Jok in 2017.

Mount Pleasant — The KILJ Bracket Challenged powered by Press Box Grille and Bar and Wiley’s Interior Furnishings and Design is coming down to the wire.

In first place is “ENosbisch 1″ who accurately predicted three of the four Final Four teams.

That entry has Duke winning the National Title over Kansas.

Jen Campbell remains the top contender.

Campbell would win the Bracket Challenge if Villanova would win the National Championship and Duke lose to North Carolina.

The Final Four will be played in New Orleans on April 2nd.
