Prep Track: Davidson Guides Panthers to Win at WBND; Other Results

Burlington — Will Davidson won the long jump and 110m hurdles as the Mount Pleasant boys’ track team earned the team championships at the 2022 Falcon Relays hosted by West Burlington-Notre Dame yesterday.

Davidson went 21 feet, 10 inches in the long jump — seventh in school history — and then ran 15.50 in the 110m hurdles to claim two golds.

The Panthers went 1-2 in the hurdles with state place-winner Bryce Wilson finishing in second in 15.51 seconds.

Bowen Davis went third in the 400m hurdles, finishing in 1:06.53 capping off a usually strong day for Panther hurdlers.

Isaiah Albright and Mason Sloat finished second and third in the 400m, while Nathan McWilliams was the runner-up in the mile.

The Panthers finished with 160 team points, ahead of Washington, Fort Madison and Burlington in the top four.

In Class B, Mediapolis cruised to the team title followed up Danville and New London.

Anthony Isley ripped the track apart yesterday, claiming gold in four events: 100, 200, 4×100 and 4×200.

Trent Hicks won the 110m hurdles for the Bulldogs, while Logan Rosas was the runner up in the 400m.

New London, who finished third, received wins from Joel Lacy in the long and Kade Benjamin in the high jump.

A state medalist from a year ago, Carter Allen won the shot put and discus for the Tigers, who thoroughly dominated Class B field events.

Danville got wins from Ty Carr in the 400m, with the senior finishing in 53.57. A.J. Bonnesen took home first place honors in the two-mile, crossing the finish line in 9:55.55.

Tonight will be the girls’ event.

Field events will get underway at West Burlington at 4:30 p.m.

College Golf: Tigers Drop Purple Cup to Waldorf

Iowa Wesleyan received wins from Aubrey Duncan and Trace White, Michal Wohlleber and Kenny Tucker and Karli Kirchner and Brevin Wilson but could not overcome Waldorf in a narrow 55-53 loss.

The win secured the Purple Cup for the Warriors in the Ryder Cup style of play.

Kirchner and Wilson rolled to a 12-6 win, the largest margin at the tournament.

Duncan and White and Wohlleber and Tucker both won their matchup 9.5 to 8.5.

Iowa Wesleyan will be right back on the links today as they host their home tournament.

The tournament will be held at Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course.

Women’s College Basketball: Joens Heading Back to ISU

Ames — Iowa State senior Ashley Joens has announced that she will return to the program for her fifth year.

Joens has a been a four-year starter and stalwart among Bill Fennelly’s frontcourt.

The Iowa City native led the Clones to a 28-7 record this year, averaging 20.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Her efforts guided Iowa State back to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2010.

For her career, she has averaged 18.8 points and 8.6 rebounds.

College Football: UNI Announces 2022 Schedule

Cedar Falls — The UNI Panther football team will open their 2022 season on the road and spend October in the UNI-Dome.

Panther will be treated to six games in the UNI-Dome. The home season will kick off with Hall of Fame weekend against Sacramento State.

UNI will open the 2022 fall season on the road at Air Force.

It will be the first time the Panthers and Falcons have ever met.

The first Missouri Valley Football Conference opponent will come early against the newest member of the league in North Dakota.

UNI homecoming is set for October 8th against Illinois State.

New MP Middle School Principal

The Mount Pleasant School Board met in special session Monday night and approved several personnel items including hiring a new Middle School principal.  Mark Adams will replace Nathan Lange, who’s resignation is effective at the end of the school year.  Adams comes to Mount Pleasant from his position with the Van Buren County Community School District as the 7 thru 12 principal.  The board also voted to hire Brandon Ridinger as the new Director of Technology.

Following the special meeting the board held a work session to discuss capital projects for the next school year.  Potential projects include sanding and painting the High School gym floor, in addition to carpet and paint for some of that building’s classrooms. Also on the list…continuing driveway and sidewalk repair at the High School as well as some exterior brick repair.  There are some continued exterior masonry repairs at Van Allen.  Supt. John Henriksen said they are considering putting in a bus pull-in area on the south side of the Van Allen building to help with traffic congestion before and after school. The Lincoln building could also use some improvements to the car line on the south side. The project list includes some painting at the Salem building and new siding for the garage there. Supt. Henriksen also added new mowers for the district to the list.

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

4-H County Council sponsoring IJBBA Open Cattle Show

Washington County 4-H County Council will be sponsoring an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association (IJBBA) sanctioned open cattle show on Saturday, April 23 at the Washington County Fairgrounds.  This event is open to youth of all ages up to 21.  To exhibit at this show, there are no requirements be a member of the IJBBA or a member of 4-H.  However, members of the IJBBA will receive points.  To see all IJBBA show rules visit http://ijbba.com/rules-ijbba/.  This is a great opportunity for youth to compete against youth from other counties, work more with their cattle, gain experience showing and have fun.

Check-in and day of registration is set for 8:00-9:30 a.m. $35.00 registration entry fee.  Make checks payable to Washington County Extension Office.  The show will begin at 11:00 a.m.   Supreme Champion will receive $250.00 and Reserve Champion will receive $150.00 for both market and breeding animals.  All 1st-3rd place in the class will have cash awards.

Health papers are required on all animals.  If intending to show in a breed division registration papers are required.  Generators are recommended, but not required.  In conjunction with this event will be a Pancake Breakfast from 7:00-10:30 a.m. in the lower level of Dallmeyer Hall on the fairgrounds.
