Boys Prep Basketball: Burlington Falls in 4A Quarters
After racing out to an 11-8 lead after one quarter Burlington saw top-seeded Ames outscore them by 23 over three quarters, defeating the Greyhounds 60-40 yesterday in a Class 4A Quarterfinal.
Ames advances to today’s semifinal round, where the Little Cyclones will meet fourth-seed Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Iowa State recruit Tamin Lipsey fueled the comeback effort for Ames, scoring a game-high 16 points, including 10 straight in a 12-point run for the Little Cyclones in the second quarter.
Corey Phillips added 11 for Ames, while Trevion LaBeaux chipped in with 10.
With the game still in reach at half, Ames took full control with a 24-10 third quarter run to essentially end the game.
A team that shot just 28% from three in the regular season all of a sudden couldn’t miss from three.
“Our goal was to try to protect the paint. Statistically from 3, they weren’t shooting lights-out or anything. We had some sagging man-to-man stuff going on. It was disruptive enough it was 11-8 in the first quarter.” said head coach Caleb Akey of his team’s defensive game plan.
Jackson Carlson led Burlington with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Amarion Davis chipped in with 11.
Burlington closes their season 17-8, winners of 15 of their last 18 games including two program shifting tournament trail wins over Iowa City West and Pleasant Valley.
Ames is now 21-3.
Boys’ Prep Basketball: IHSAA State Basketball
The third day of the Iowa High School boys’ state basketball tournament proved to be a good one, with 4A playing their quarterfinals and 1A getting their semis done.

Women’s College Basketball: Clark Named Naismith POY
University of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Caitlin Clark was named a Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday.
The Des Moines, Iowa, native leads the nation in assists per game (7.9), points per game (27.4), free throws made (189), triple doubles (5) and 30-point games (11).
Clark registered five triple-doubles this season, leading the country in most career triple-doubles by an active player with six.
Clark was named Big Ten Player of the Year and earned unanimous first team All-Big Ten honors and also was named a Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Finalist.
College Wrestling: NCAA Releases National Tournament Seeds
Five University of Iowa wrestlers were seeded fifth or better at their respective weights when the NCAA released tournament brackets Wednesday for the 2022 NCAA Championships in Detroit on March 17-19.
Returning NCAA finalist Jaydin Eierman is seeded No. 2 at 141 pounds. Alex Marinelli and Tony Cassioppi are seeded third at 165 and 285, and Michael Kemerer and Austin DeSanto are seeded fifth at 174 and 133.
Jacob Warner, Max Murin and Kaleb Young earned top 10 seeds. Warner is sixth at 197, Murin is eighth at 149 and Young is seeded ninth at 157.
Drake Ayala enters his first NCAA tournament as the No. 13 seed at 125 pound. Abe Assad is seeded 18th at 184 pounds. Assad qualified for the national tournament in 2020 before it was cancelled due to COVID 19.
Iowa is sending its entire 10-man lineup to the NCAA Championships.
