Lula B. Stigers,

Lula B. Stigers, 84, of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at Unity Point Hospital in Muscatine.  Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Morning Sun.  Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Muscatine.    In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.    Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

 

Lula Belle Wiley was born on December 21, 1936 in Oakville, Iowa, the daughter of Florence “Fuzz” and Mary “Wilma” (Reid) Wiley.  Lula was a 1954 graduate of Morning Sun High School.  On May 11, 1968, she was united in marriage to Claude Stigers in Morning Sun.  Lula worked at the Morning Sun Care Center.  She loved to play BINGO; enjoyed crocheting, collecting frogs and traveling to craft shows.

 

Lula will be deeply missed by her husband, Claude of Muscatine; son, Ted Stigers (Susan Rosney) of Gurnee, Illinois; siblings, Darlene (Larry) Howard of Newton, Iowa and Frances Callis of Altoona and many loved nieces and nephews.

 

Lula was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lucille “Shorty” Anderson and brothers, Kenneth and Robert Wiley.

John Rode

John Rode, 76, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, November 29, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services are pending at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

Joshua Hollister

Joshua Hollister, 36, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of New London, died Friday, November 26, 2021 in the emergency department at Henry County Health Center.  According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of  Life will be held at a later date.  Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

William Boyd Stropes

William Boyd Stropes, 83, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, November 26, 2021, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

William was born April 13, 1938, in Illinois, the son of Henry and Mildred (Morris) Stropes. He attended Rocky High School in Rock Island, Illinois. On December 9, 1995, he was united in marriage to Linda Hinderliter in New Boston, Illinois. William worked as a diesel mechanic for many years. He was a member of the Faith Christian Outreach Church.

William is survived by his wife Linda; two daughters, Agape-Rose Stropes of Winfield, Charity Lynn Stropes of Salem; three sons, Tim Stropes of Iowa, David Stropes of Monmouth, Illinois, Mark Stropes of Tennessee; sister Tina Mass; three brothers Ed Stropes, Finnis Stropes and Darryl Stropes all of Illinois; and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Louise, an infant sister and two brothers Steven and Victor Stropes.

According to William’s wishes his body has been cremated and there will be no services at this time. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is caring for William and his family.

Assisting suicide charges filed for participant in game of Russian Roulette

On November 7, 2021, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to a home in
Fairfield, Iowa on a report that an individual in the home had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
The reporting party, 21 year old Finnegan Edward Malloy, reported that 19 year old Caleb Heisel had shot
himself in the head while playing “Russian Roulette.” Mr. Heisel was deceased upon the arrival of law
enforcement and medical personnel, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. A revolver-style
firearm with one spent cartridge was located at the scene, believed to belong to Mr. Malloy. Due to the
circumstances surrounding the death, the body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.
Mr. Malloy was arrested on November 24 by Fairfield Police, and is charged in Jefferson County with
one count of Assisting Suicide, and one count of Aiding and Abetting Reckless Use of a Firearm, each a Class C
felony.
These charges are simply an accusation of criminal activity, and Mr. Malloy is innocent unless and until
proven guilty in a court of law.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Opens Tomorrow, Small Slate Tonight

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant boys’ will open their season tomorrow when the Panthers host Cedar Rapids Xavier.

It will mark the beginning of year two under head coach Eric Rawson, who took the program over from Caleb Akey who left for the same position at Burlington High School.

The Panthers will lean heavily on senior forward Dewon Trent, who was an all-conference selection from a year ago.

Owen Vansickel and Payton Hagans are also expected to shoulder more of an offensive load in their second varsity season.

Tomorrow’s game will tip at 7:30 p.m. and you can listen on FM 105.5 and kilj.com.

Girls’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Battles Ottumwa, Other Area Tilts

KILJ — The Mount Pleasant girls’ basketball team will be back on the hardwood tonight when they travel to take on Ottumwa at Evans Middle School.

The Panthers are coming off a 63-43 loss last week by the hands of Pella, while Ottumwa fell to Fort Madison 42-30.

Addison Ransom was the points leader for the Bulldogs last week, scoring 10 points. Ottumwa will start two freshman — Hunter Caldwell and Camdyn Crouse — Crouse scored eight points and bagged nine boards in her debut last week.

Andrea Lopreato started her junior season with a bang despite the loss to the Dutch, scoring 17 points to lead the Panthers.

Mount Pleasant has won the last two matchups against Ottumwa, including a 37-25 win just over one year ago.

Previously, Ottumwa had won five consecutive over the Panthers.

Due to contractual obligations with Hawkeye basketball, who play tonight at Virginia, there will be no radio for tonight’s tilt.

Tip is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. from Evans Middle School.
