253rd Street & Oakland Mills Dam Drainage Project

The Henry County Conservation Department reported, in collaboration with the Henry County Secondary Roads Department, that a long-standing drainage problem along 253rd Street on the north side of the Oakland Mills Dam has been fixed!

Over time, the road ditch became shallow, causing water to pool along the roadway and back up onto the county park. During heavy rain, the full ditch risked washing water across the road and into the conservation parking lot—creating erosion issues, including a growing gully near the sidewalk and fishing area. The two departments partnered to restore proper drainage by cleaning and re-sloping the ditch. Water is directed into a tile inlet, allowing it to safely flow underground. The stable outlet now prevents erosion and protects the park infrastructure.

This collaborative effort improves safety, protects county resources, and ensures a better experience for all who visit the park.
