MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (Nov. 4, 2025) — The Henry County Auditor’s Office has released the unofficial results from Tuesday’s City and School Election. All nine precincts have reported, with 2,695 ballots cast out of 15,498 registered voters, for a 17.39% voter turnout.

As polls closed Tuesday night across Henry County, the results are in for the 2025 city and school elections.
Mount Pleasant Mayor Steve Brimhall will remain in office, receiving 716 votes out of 1,087 cast. Challenger Kim Conrad received 371 votes in the contest.
Another major decision for local voters came in the Mount Pleasant Community School District elections. Josh Maher will continue to serve in his at-large seat, earning 1,368 votes.
In the race for the District 2 seat, Craig Hurd narrowly defeated Melinda Huisinga, earning 823 votes (50.4%) to Huisinga’s 810 votes. Heard will take over the position previously held by Husinga.
Meanwhile, in District 3, Kevin Schrader will succeed Derek Mullin, with Schrader receiving 850 votes to Mullin’s 798.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Calvary Baptist Church.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Burial will be in the Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association – Iowa Chapter.

Prep Football- As District 5 for Eight-Player cheers for Iowa Valley to continue their undefeated run through the season with a quarterfinal showdown against Audubon at home this Thursday, November 6th, the All-District Teams were released with the Tigers leading the pack.
Offensive MVP
For the second consecutive season, Nolan Kriegel of Iowa Valley took home Offensive MVP as the junior combined for 2,434 total yards and 53 touchdowns through ten weeks of the season. Most importantly, as a quarterback, he has thrown zero interceptions and completing 67.3% of his passes.
His 58 total touchdowns rank first in the entire state. He was also voted 1st Team All-District quarterback.
Defensive MVP
Belle Plaine, the newcomer to the district, had Wade Sankot lift the hardware. The 1st Team All-District linebacker tallied 57 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and nabbed a pick-six in his senior season along with rushing for 845 yards and eight touchdowns.
Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year
Iowa Valley has produced one of the best seasons in their program’s history, climbing as high as #4 in the Eight-Player rankings for the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and still sitting at 10-0 with one win separating them from a trip to the UNI-Dome.
For those efforts, Casey Krull was named All-District Head Coach for the second straight season and Dan Sovers was named All-District Assistant Coach.
Golden Spikes Award
The Golden Spikes award is given out to players who were injured for all or part of the season and did not play enough games to earn All-District honors.
Unfortunately, Deshon Anderson of English Valleys made the list for the second consecutive year. Chandler McKibben of Iowa Valley was also nominated for the award.
WACO
The Warriors made it to the postseason for the 5th straight season after finishing in 3rd place for the district. For that achievement, WACO had five players make it on 1st Team Offense or Defense and five additional players find a spot on the 2nd Team.
Swiss army knife Hayden Shelman was named 1st Team running back for the district as his electric play carried the offense. The junior produced 1,212 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 7.1 yards per carry. He also added 571 yards through the air passing and 21 yards receiving. He finished the season with 22 total touchdowns.
Paving the way for Shelman and the offense that compiled 2,054 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns was 6’8 senior Adam Stafford. For his bulldozing ways, Stafford was named 1st Team offensive lineman.
For the final spot on the 1st Team offense, Niles Reichenbach was named 1st Team kicker. The senior was 26 of 28 on extra points and made a 30-yard field goal on the season. This is the second season in a row that he has earned this honor.
Switching over to defense, Trey Edeker was named 1st Team defensive lineman. The undersized lineman burrowed his way through for 25 tackles, including a team high eight tackles for loss and the only sack of the season.
Along with earning 1st Team kicker, Reichenbach also claimed 1st Team linebacker. The senior finished second on the team with 35 tackles and tied for first with interceptions two.
On the 2nd Team, Casey Coakley was named 2nd Team wide receiver and Nic Pacha was put on as 2nd Team offensive lineman. Coakley led the team with 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Tyler Rogers found a spot on the defensive line, while Sam Meyer and Raefe Davison were named 2nd Team linebackers. Meyer led the team in tackles with 43.5 and nabbed two interceptions. Davison collected six tackles for loss and Rogers amassed 18 tackles.
Levi Bachman and Kellen Shelman were named to the Honorable Mention list.
Winfield-Mt. Union
The Wolves nearly snuck into the playoffs but just missed out despite averaging 30 points per game with their most impressive win coming against English Valleys in a 28-26 final. Helping the offense glide through the air was Tayson Samuels, as he was named 1st Team wide receiver, and Max Edwards, 1st Team tight end.
Samuels led the team in receptions with 53 and yards with 615. He also grabbed three touchdowns. Edwards caught 46 passes for 580 yards with a team-leading eight receiving touchdowns. It is Edwards’ second time earning a spot on the 1st Team.
Also finding a spot on the 1st Team for the second straight season was senior offensive lineman Grant Anderson. He helped the rushing attack gain four yards per carry and 1,526 yards through the air.
Appreciating that time was 1st Team punter and 2nd Team quarterback Cody Milks. The junior averaged 36 yards per punt as he booted it away 18 times throughout the season. As a quarterback, he tossed for 1,404 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added 157 yards and five scores on the ground.
Nicholas Sparrow, a senior, was named 2nd Team running back for his 380 total yards and seven total touchdowns. Leading the way was 2nd Team offensive lineman Gabe Cummings, a senior.
Wyatt Palmer was placed on the 2nd Team defensive line as he accounted for 13.5 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two fumble recoveries. Kade Sweezer was named Honorable Mention.

Well, if you are reading this, it is ……. On …………. You might want to grab a book instead, if not, read on. After so many negotiations with God about when, where, and how, God chose when, but I got my wish of going to sleep and passing peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025, in my own bed, in my own home. I am now getting ready for special uber angels to take me to my forever home. First, I asked to be cremated so my ashes can be mixed with Mike’s, and later David’s and Mitch’s, with some to be buried and some to be scattered at a later time. But before I leave, most people already know this, but in case your memory is going, or you read obits in order to rob houses, please don’t. And forget about hooking up with my hubby, he’s too tired from taking such good care of me and will be busy sorting through the crap I kept. He did take good care of me with help from Mitch and my siblings and too many others to name. Hospice was very helpful, even Annie who I kept getting wet during my showers. I will give you this information and if it is not correct it will make for a good conversation starter at my visitation. So, if you are curious, please join my friends who haven’t passed and my family who still claim me on Saturday November 8th from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Elliott Chapel, One Redbud Lane, New London, Iowa.
I was born October 2, 1942 to Richard W. and Refa E. Bequeaith Miller in Ottumwa, Iowa. I had an older sister Janice. My brother was born three years later and I became that middle child. I first lived by my paternal grandparents, Martin and Eva Miller outside of Batavia and started country school at Cross Lanes. Next for first grade was Pulaski. Then on to Keosauqua for second grade, elementary, middle and high school. Many friends and fun times. I liked school but my favorite thing was basketball. I have a few very good friends that still live there.
Then, of course, I thought I knew what I wanted and got married to Glen Carr. Together, we raised three children; Cathy, Michael and Mitchell. We lived a short time in Fairfield, then moved to Libertyville where the children started school and I enrolled in Joan Tedrows nursing class at Jefferson County Hospital. Such a great person and friend. Great place to work for twenty eight years, great people to work with.
In the early seventies we moved to a farm in Douds, Iowa. We didn’t do such a great job of farming but we’re forever thankful to raise the children on the farm. I loved Douds, the school and more friends. Good times with the kids, 4H, horse shows and their sports. I didn’t love one thing though, but I survived it; the drive to and from work. I worked 11 to 7 the first 10 years. Every deer in the county was on that road, or it was the weather and bad ice. But let me tell you, getting home in the morning was worse. I guess you are not supposed to drive on both sides of the road with your eyes closed. The good Lord drove those mornings and the neighbor met me the last mile on his way to town and honked to wake me up. Probably good that once the kids were on their own and I worked better hours we moved back to Libertyville. During the next years of work I had a few auto accidents and a couple back surgeries and worked in nursing administration. Better hours but I missed the ER and coworkers. It’s very hard to keep your sanity when putting out the schedule while trying to make that many women happy and be fair to everyone. IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! Time to retire and enjoy the grandkids, reading, and other hobbies for a while.
The next few years were both busy and stressful. I was happy to donate a kidney to my son Michael. Both sad and relieved to separate and later divorce Glen. Spent time with family, friends and others. Also helped Mike with Logan’s home school. I met David in 2007 and we married in 2012. Other than a few bumps it’s been a great eighteen years. Thanks to him, I got to experience things I wouldn’t have otherwise. We have traveled; spent winters in Mexico, Arizona and Texas; summers at Lake of the Ozarks on our boat; time with bonus daughters and grandkids; and time with granddaughter and the Bruce families, especially the four wild great-grandsons. I am going to miss all of this plus of course, David and Mitch. But it is what it is and I am looking forward to seeing Michael and so many others. Other survivors are my husband David; son Mitchell Carr; daughter Cathy Schaus; step daughters Tara (Ben) Nahorney and Ashley Banes. Also my sister Janice (Bill); brother Larry (Janet); stepbrother David; stepsisters Diane (Larry) Williams and Barb (Greg) Dyer; ten grandchildren, Jennifer Castle; Nick, Andy and Rob Schaus; Chelsie (Trinity) Bruce; Logan Carr; Aubrey and Liam Nahorny; and Weston and Blaire Banes. Also, nine GREAT GRANDSONS; Tony, Bobby and Stevie Castle; Tyler and Nathan Schaus; and the youngest four, Graham, Benjamin, Oliver and Cooper Bruce. I am really going to miss this group but am anxious to see the following people who are waiting on me. My grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and step brother Bob. Looking for that big hug from my son Michael. For sure I hear the angels and I don’t want to be late; who am I kidding…. I am always late! I will miss you all (well depends on who you all are) but for sure will try to watch you all below. Ooops. I am heading to my forever home.
