The fun run & walk starts at 8:15am at the High School. A Fun Run t-shirt is provided with registration. All money goes towards the Mount Pleasant National Honor Society.

Henry County Health Center Diabetes Educational November Classes Set

Henry County Health Center’s Diabetes Education is preparing for the following classes in the month of November. The first class will be the November 14th Annual Review Course for anyone with Type 1 or Type 2 and has completed the 10-hour diabetes class. Take a deeper dive into diabetes topics that interest you and connect with others in the Pre-diabetic class held November 18th. A CGM Support group on November 21st, and a Diabetes Group Class November 25th. Topics within each class include proper meal planning, exercise, dental care, medications, and time for questions. The HCHC Diabetes Education feels the purpose is to provide people who have diabetes and their families with the latest information regarding the disease. Henry County Early Election Update

With election day next Tuesday, KILJ can report the number of early votes is just under 4,500 votes for Henry County. The courthouse will be open this Saturday from 9am-5pm for early voters. Monday is the last day for early voting. On Tuesday you will have to report to your assigned polling station to vote on election day. To find out information on polling station locations, times, ballot lists, or sample ballots, visit henrycounty.iowa.gov/election.

Mt. Pleasant FFA Harvests First Test Plot

As many of you in Henry County might know, The Mt pleasant FFA students have been working on their first test plot for just over two years now. Soy bean is the crop of choice, and Ethan talks about their first harvest…

Postseason Volleyball

#3 Holy Trinity Catholic will take on #6 BCLUW in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, November 5th, at 8:25 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 8:05 pm. Junior middle hitter Presley Myers has turned her game up another notch through the postseason, but credits her team’s composure for their success,

“Oh no, I don’t think I’ve really changed anything. I mean, I’m definitely just trying to have a go get it mindset. You know, me and Anna have been just working a lot, connecting really well. And honestly, everyone on the team, our connections, our communication is just like at its peak right now. And I really think we’re gonna stay on that peak, you know, throughout the state tournament. But no, I haven’t changed anything. We’ve just really been working. You know, we’re trying to have the right mindset because when it comes down to it, your mental strength is so much more important than your physical. So, we’re just trying to keep [mindset] positive.”

The other Class 1A matchups include: Ankeny Christian will face off against Don Bosco, Riverside will compete against North Tama, and Saint Ansgar will take on Janesville. 

Class 5A will start off the tournament with Pleasant Valley facing off against Waukee on Monday, November 4th, at noon. Ankeny Centennial will take on Cedar Falls, Dowling Catholic will compete against Indianola, and Ankeny will tango with Waukee Northwest.

Class 4A’s top seed Xavier will face off against Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Monday at 4 pm. Clear Creek Amana will take on Pella. Bishop Heelan will compete against Carlisle and North Scott will look to advance over Glenwood.

Class 3A will start the day on Tuesday with Mt. Vernon going against Mid-Prairie at 10 am. Wahlert Catholic versus Kuemper Catholic at noon. Western Christian will take on Sioux Center and West Delaware will face off against Assumption.

The state tournament matchups for Class 2A will be Denver versus Boyden-Hull, Dike-New Hartford will take on Aplington-Parkersburg, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont will compete against Regina Catholic, and Beckman Catholic will face off against South Hardin. The tournament will begin at 2 pm on Tuesday for Class 2A. 

Postseason Football

WACO will travel to #3 Don Bosco tonight at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. 

#10 West Burlington/Notre Dame will take on #8 Anamosa on the road tonight.

Mediapolis will get a district rematch against Mid-Prairie on the road at 7 tonight.

In Class 3A, #5 Mt. Vernon will host Carroll and Assumption will hit to the road to take on #3 Wahlert Catholic with both games scheduled for 7 pm tonight.

High School Cross Country

The Class 3A state meet is scheduled for today in Fort Dodge with the Washington girls’ team and Mt. Pleasant’s Quintrie Lee scheduled to run at 10:30 this morning with the Demon boys’ team to follow. 

The Class 1A and Class 2A state meets will run tomorrow, November 2nd, with the Class 1A girls’ race leading the way at 10:30 am. For the Class 2A boys’ race, Mediapolis will have a trio of runners competing in Mason Lindeen, Will Schmidgall, and Simon Wendell. On the girls’ side, Hannah Fruehling and Kaitlyn Kipp will run for Notre Dame/West Burlington. 

For Class 1A, the Danville, Van Buren County, and Columbus boys’ teams will be competing along with the Danville girls’ team. For the qualifying individuals, Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom and WACO’s Jude Dykstra will participate in the boys’ race, while the duo of Rylee Phillips and Kayley Snowgren of Van Buren County will run in the girls’ race. 

Southeastern Community College

The volleyball team will face off against Des Moines Area Community College on Wednesday, November 6th, in the Region 11 Quarterfinals at 7 pm.

College Football

Iowa will take on Wisconsin tomorrow, November 2nd, at 6:30 pm at home. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the broadcast. 

#11 Iowa State will be back in action tomorrow at 2:30 pm at home against Texas Tech. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.

1924 – The Boston Bruins officially join the NHL, becoming the first United States based team to enter the League; the Montreal Maroons also join the NHL, but only last until 1938.

1964 – Cleveland running back Jim Brown runs for 149 yards in a Browns’ 30-17 win at Pittsburgh to become the first NFL player to exceed 10,000 career rushing yards.

Ruth K. Bruegge

Ruth K. Bruegge, 81, of the Stockport and Birmingham communities passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the Parkview Home in Wayland.

Ruth was born on January 5, 1943, in Fairfield the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Wagner) Smith.  She graduated from Fairfield High School in the class of 1961.  Ruth was united in marriage to Lee Elmer Bruegge on March 22, 1962, in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on December 8, 1998.  Throughout her life she served others, as she worked at several nursing homes in the area as a cook and the Van Buren County Hospital. Ruth retired from the West Point Care Center in 1999. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crossword puzzles, crocheting and spending time with her family.   Ruth was a member of the Stockport United Methodist Church and the Birmingham Lions Club.

Ruth is survived by her children, Garry (Nadine) Bruegge of Douds, Willis (Shelly) Bruegge of Birmingham and Brenda Prevett (Daniel Helterbran) of Lockridge, 10 grandchildren,17 great grandchildren and  1 great great grandchild, her sister, Myrna Capps, of Arkansas and her brothers, James Smith, of Indiana and Johnny Smith, of Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spencer Cemetery, rural Stockport with Pastor Mike Renken officiating.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. that evening at the funeral home.  Memorials have been established in her memory to the Stockport United Methodist Church or to the Birmingham Lions Club.

Edward Allen “Eddie” Boyd

Edward Allen “Eddie” Boyd, 68, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2024, at his home in Farmington.

He was born on February 6, 1956, in Keosauqua, Iowa, the son of Gerald LaVerne and Jessie Louise (Pittman) Boyd.

He is survived by his son: Travis (Kari) Boyd of Tea, South Dakota; grandchildren: Maizy and Cru; one brother: Floyd Boyd; three sisters: Brenda (Randy) Cook, Connie (Jeff Oaks) Boyd, and Julie (Stephen) Krauter. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Marvina Sullivan, Cecelia Poole; two brothers: Marlin Boyd and Blair Boyd.

Eddie worked for Hawkeye Steel. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Monday, November 4, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral home in Farmington, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, November 4, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington, with Michael Browning officiating.

Burial will be at Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.

A memorial has been established in his memory.
